Burton bag basement battle win

Burton (102 for 4) beat Llangwm (99 all out) by 6 wickets

Umpires: Allan Hansen & Bob Elliott

Scorers: Dennis Venables & Cerys Griffiths

Burton played some good cricket to move off the foot of the table at the expense of opponents Llangwm, whose batting was described as ‘useless’ by skipper Ollie Davies after the game had seen Burton win by six wickets.

“Joe Kiff was the only one who looked likely to stay long,” admitted the honest Davies, “and no-one else could even manage double figures.”

Put in to bat first, Llangwm struggled from the outset against the pace attack of Johnny Scale (six maidens in his 1 for 17 from 12 overs) and James Davies (3 for 10) before Morgan Scale bowled his canny slow stuff to return figures of 3 for 42 – and Luke Hayman helped wrap things up with 1 for 2.

As a result, Llangwm were never able to build any big partnerships despite Kiff smashing six sixes in a typically robust 63 that also contained three fours and with a 50 made from 53 deliveries.

But a target of 100 to win was thought unlikely to trouble Burton and although there were wickets for Ollie Davies (1 for 25), Luke Brock (1 for 11), Joe Phillips (1 for 15) and Phil Llewellyn (1 for 13) that is just how it turned out.

Toby Hayman (13), Jonathan Venables (23) and Martin James (25) put Burton on the right road before Morgan Scale ended things with 14 not out as Burton reached their target with overs and wickets to spare.

Davies drives Rooks to victory over Seasiders

Carew (172 for 8) beat Saundersfoot (144 all out) by 28 runs

Umpires: Richard Merriman & Dave Bonner

Scorers: Julie Davies & Adge John

Rhys Davies produced the performance of the day for Carew as they were worthy winners against Saundersfoot after being asked to bat first and building up a tally of  172 for 8 before Davies grabbed a six-wicket haul that helped The Rooks win by 28 runs.

Ian Sefton maintained his run of good form as the classy batsman contributed top score of 64 (four fours and two sixes) to Carew’s final tally, assisted by Rhys Davies (24, including three boundaries), Tom Davies (14), Shaun Whitfield (returning from an ankle injury with 14) and Ceri Brace, who hit a six and three fours in his 27.

So Carew batted their full complement of overs as Saundersfoot skipper Sam Franklyn (3 for 31), John Mansbridge (2 for 40), brother Tom (1 for 10) and Nick Cope (2 for 36) were the Seasiders’ wicket-takers.

When The Seasiders batted after tea it was their skipper Sam Franklin who led the way with 34 alongside John Mansbridge (24), Nick Cope (32), James Caine (10) and Danny Brace (12) but Davies claimed 6 for 57 in 11 overs, six of them maidens, plus two sharp catches.

Tom Davies (1 for 11 in eight overs) Iori Hicks (2 for 36) and Shaun Whitfield (1 for 23), making a welcome return after a month out with an ankle injury, were the other Carew wicket-takers in an entertaining tussle.

*Sports lovers around the county will join PembrokeshireSport.co.uk in wishing popular Carew footballer and cricketer James Hinchliffe a speedy recovery after an injury sustained whilst on holiday in Spain.*

Town halt slide by beating makeshift Doves

Haverfordwest (241 for 6) beat Cresselly (117 all out) by 124 runs

Umpires: Arthur Brady & Trefor Evans

Scorer: Jayne Cole (Haverfordwest)

Haverfordwest comfortably beat a makeshift Cresselly side in a roller-coaster of a match on The Racecourse where they recovered from a dreadful start to reach 241 for 6 and then bowled out the opposition for only 117, a win that nudges them back into second spot in the table.

To be fair to the visitors they were forced to field a mix of talented young players like 15 year old cousins Morgan and  Josh Lewis alongside veterans of the calibre of Richard Harris, Phil ‘Spam’ James and Neal Williams, who not only kept wicket for 45 overs but top scored with 49.

Put in to bat first, Haverfordwest struggled early on against Tom Arthur and Sam Harts, who saw The Town reduced to 20 for 4 thanks to rank bad batting alongside some tight bowling by the Cresselly duo.

But then Ben Field and Chris Fitzpatrick settled things down and gradually built up the tempo against Cresselly’s makeshift attack and eventually celebrated a club-record score of 202 before Field mishit a ball from 15 year old Morgan Lewis and was caught by Richard Harris for 86, with eight fours and three sixes as reward for his willingness to persevere.

Fitzpatrick departed soon afterwards, having celebrated an excellent first-ever three-figure score of 102 which included 11 fours and three sixes before he was bowled by Richard Harris, who has just celebrated retirement from work and been selected for the English over 60s squad which will travel to Australia for six weeks later in the year!

For Cresselly, 15 year old cousins Morgan (1 for 25) and Josh Lewis (0 for 17) bowled well and there were wickets for Tom Arthur (3 for 48), Harts (1 for 32), and Harris (1 for 51).

Williams opened the batting and played well for Cresselly alongside Dan Sutton (20) but The Town had their own veteran to recall former glory days as slow bowler Clive Tucker claimed 6 for 15 and found support from Simon Holliday (2 for 17) and Ashley James (1 for 36).

Ross Hardy bowling on his debut for Neyland

Neyland show title-winning form

Neyland (173 for 2) beat Lawrenny (171 all out) by 8 wickets

Umpires: John Williams & Simon Richards

Scorers: John Laugharne & Malcolm Thomas

Neyland showed why they are clear leaders at the top of the table, and favourites already to win the title this season, as they maintained their 100% record with a comfortable win over a strong Lawrenny side which had moved threateningly into third place with a string of good performances.

After being asked to bat first, Lawrenny were unable to find a batsman who could make a major contribution against Neyland’s varied attack but their strength in depth was shown by the way that they had decent cameos from Kurtis Marsh (19), James Phillips (32), James Buckle (26), Brad McDermott-Jenkins (12), skipper Joe Kidney (33) and Ryan Morton (18).

But Neyland kept plugging away in their inimitable style as all-rounder Ross Hardy made his debut after transfer from Kilgetty and Nathan Banner made a welcome return to action after work commitments to claim 2 for 37 as well as pouching four excellent catches as he patrolled the boundary fence.

Tom Pritchard (2 for 5) and Geraint Rees (1 for 20) also bowled good spells but once again it was the spin wizardry of Andrew Miller which proved a key factor as he tormented the visitors’ batsmen and deservedly returned figures of 5 for 57.

Lawrenny needed early successes if they were to beat Neyland but Patrick Bellerby showed why he is now a county regular with a sparkling innings of 84 before he was bowled by James Skeels when three figures looked a distinct possibility, having rapped 14 fours.

Andrew Miller showed why he is such an asset after so many years with Neyland as he stroked seven fours in his undefeated 48 – whilst Ross Hardy marked his debut after switching from Kilgetty and scoring 13 not out as Neyland eased home in only 37.5 overs!

Tish overcome a dose of the wobbles to win

Whitland (127 all out) lost to St Ishmaels (128 for 7) by 3 wickets

Umpires: Jonathan Willington & Robert Ridge

Scorers: Rob Benjamin & Wendy Bradshaw

St Ishmaels gained an excellent win at Whitland as they bowled and fielded well to restrict the home side to 127 all out and looked home and dry as they drew level for the loss of only four wickets, but then it took them almost five overs to score the winning run and having scorer Wendy Bradshaw having bitten her finger nails to the quick!

Whitland have compiled some sizeable scores of late but on this occasion found it hard to make consistent headway as only Wayne Howells (two boundaries in his 36) and Matthew Davies (32, including three fours and a six) topped their batting and Dylan Blain chipped in with 15 runs.

Brennan Devonald (3 for 19), Jordan Milich (3 for 25) and Andrew Pawlett (3 for 46) were the principle Tish wicket-takers alongside Andrew Williams’ 1 for 24.

After tea Tish had decent knocks from Peter Bradshaw (46, including three boundaries) and Phil Cockburn (8 fours in his 43) as Wayne Howells (1 for 17), Greg Sleep (3 for 46) and Matthew Davies (1 for 33) were the best Borderers’ bowlers.

After 39 overs Tish were level but then Jack Bowen threw a spanner in the Tish batting works with a double-wicket maiden and it wasn’t until experienced campaigner Andrew Williams took a single after 43.3 overs that Mrs B and Co could heave a sigh of relief as her team leap-frogged the opposition into sixth place!

Division Two:

Llechryd go top in double-quick time

Llechryd (33 for 0) beat Pembroke (31 all out) by 10 wickets

Scorer: Will Newell (Llechryd)

The quickest finish in Pembrokeshire cricket yesterday undoubtedly came at Llechryd as Rhys Beard wreaked havoc for the new league leaders in shooting out Pembroke for a paltry 31.

Beard posted figures of 7-14 while Tom Curran took 2-14 as the away side were ripped apart, with only Jonathan Rodgers (8) and Rob Smythe (8 not out) making any kind of impression with the bat.

And within seven overs of the Llechryd reply, the game was over as Curran (19 not out) and James Betterley (10 not out) completed the simplest of wins.

And the day got better for the home side, with Curran awarded the Thomas Carroll Player of the Month award for May after a scintillating start to the season with the bat, including two centuries.

Narberth lose top spot as Hook close the gap

Narberth (122 for 9) lost to Hook (131 for 4) by 6 wickets

Scorers: Gwyneth Johns (Narberth)

Jake Wicks - vital half century as Hook beat NarberthHook gave the biggest indication yet they are serious contenders to return to the top flight after knocking Narberth off top spot with a convincing all round display.

They restricted the home side to just 122-9 in their 45 overs, and then Jake Wicks and George James led the way with the bat as they eased home with six wickets and 17 overs to spare.

And yet things started well for Narberth as openers Hadleigh Luff and Ritchie Adams took them past 50 before Luff (18) was caught and bowled by Matthew Holder.

That sparked a collapse as Jordan Howell (0), Loui Davies (1) and Ben Quartermaine (2) all fell cheaply, and Adams eventually went for 56, hitting three fours and a six before being caught by Matthew Rees off David Hopkins.

There was resistance from skipper Davy Johns (20) and his brother Matthew (10 not out) at No 10, but the total never looked enough as Holder finished with 4-31, Hopkins 3-26 and Aled Phelps 2-18.

Hook’s reply didn’t start smoothly though as Tom Blaxland (4) was LBW to Ben Quartermaine – who also bowled Aled Phelps (10) to leave the away side 33-2.

But then came a stand of 79 between Wicks and James, only broken when Wicks was caught by Matthew Johns trying to hit big of spinner Mike Reekie after reaching 50 (six fours).

The latter also removed Brennan Martin (8), but James hit six fours to finish 49 not out and was joined by Craig Nutty (1 not out) in sealing the win.

Cresselly stay bottom as The Town move up

Cresselly 2nds (125 all out) lost to Haverfordwest 2nds (126 for 3) by 7 wickets

Doug Johnston - unbeaten 56 helped Haverfordwest 2nds win at CressellyAn unbeaten 50 from Doug Johnson led Haverfordwest 2nds to a comfortable win over struggling Cresselly 2nds.

The Doves had laboured to 125-7 in their 45 overs, with only Steve Davies (27 – five fours) and talented youngster Charlie Arthur (20 – three fours) firing in the top order.

There was a late rally however as No 7 Neil Lewis hit two fours and a six in his 25, and shared a stand of 49 with Mark Merrick who went on to make 32 (five fours).

For The Town, Lewis Rhead led the bowling with 3-30, and there were wickets for James Marchant (2-25), Cyril Varghese (1-20) and Filgi Varghese (1-8).

Haverfordwest reached 42-0 in their reply before Huw Scriven fell to Arthur for 36 (a four and two sixes), and that became 48-3 when Arthur (2-12) also dismissed Nigel Morgan (0) and Davies (1-59) clean bowled Varghese (2).

But Johnson restored calm with five fours in his 50 not out, and Marchant supported him ably with 38 not out (three fours and a six) as the win was sealed in the 27th over.

Hicks helps Rooks win well at Glebelands

Johnston (96 all out) lost to Carew 2nds (99 for 1) by 9 wickets

Scorers: Gracie Morris & Vanessa Hicks

Robert Hicks - guided Carew 2nds to victory against JohnstonA great spell of bowling from Carl Thomas set up a nine wicket win for Carew at Johnston.

Thomas took 4-12 as the home side were shot out for 98, with Geno Cleal top scoring with 35 while Keegan Codd was the next best batsman with 12.

But Thomas was backed up by wickets for Rhys Grigg (2-26), Jacob Knox (2-31) and Rhys Canton (1-28).

The Glebelands boys struck an early blow in the Carew reply as Codd removed their skipper Scott Richards (3), but Robbie Hicks backed up his century of the previous week with 46 not out, while talented Morgan Grieve joined him in making 36 not to see The Rooks home.

Wood stars in good Dock success

Kilgetty (172 all out) lost to Pembroke Dock (189 for 5) by 17 runs

Scorers: Rose Jenkins & Nicola Murray

Billy Wood - runs and wickets in The Docks win at KilgettyBilly Wood starred with bat and ball as Pembroke Dock came through a tense finish at Cresselly to notch a first win since the opening day of the season.

Wood hit 57 before taking three vital wickets as the visitors edged home by 17 runs.

The Dock were put into bat but started well despite losing skipper Nick Daley for 9, after he nicked behind to Kyle Marsh off Richard Cope (1-43).

But Luke Murray was joined by Wood in taking the score to 95 before the opener was LBW to Ollie Gamble (1-46) for 50 (three fours).

Wood went on to make his half century with six boundaries but was skittled by Robbie Beynon, who also dismissed Scott Griffiths (20) and Thomas Grimwood (11) on route to figures of 3-35.

But 31 not out from Craig Butland ensured the batting momentum continued as The Dock posted a challenging total of 189-5.

Kilgetty had opener Tom Lewis (6) run out early in their reply and then No 3 Marsh went for 11 in just five balls, cracking a four and a six before being caught by Daley off Griffiths.

The same bowler also removed opener Jack Parkinson after a four and two sixes in his 27, caught by Pete Kingdom, and had Richard Cope (17) snared by Butland with eventual figures of 3-63.

The home side fell to 70-5 but they were given a lifeline by Toby Poole, who came in at No 6 and struck 64, including four fours and two sixes, to set up a tense finish.

But no one stayed long enough with him and when he was eighth man out, clean bowled by Wood as part of his 3-37, the visitors sensed blood and it was Jamie White who finished things off when he bowled Anthony Bevan (10) in the 43rd over.

White finished with 2-41, and skipper Daley 1-29 on what proved a good day for The Dock.
