Makeshift Vikings just miss out

Hakin United manager Gary Dawes - back in action after three-year gap

Welsh Veterans League:

Pentyrch Rangers 2 - Hakin United 1

Hakin United Over 40s travelled to Pentyrch, near Cardiff, last Sunday with a bare eleven players due to injuries and unavailability and inevitably paid the price.

Despite these setbacks, the Vikings could easily have come away with a point or even a win in a game that could have gone either way. Richard Bland played in goal instead of the injured Jason ‘Bomber’ Morgan and manager Gary Dawes played his first game for three years in the centre of midfield.

The Vikings trailed 1-0 at half time to a Rhodri Charles goal, but they were level on the hour mark as Matthew Price latched onto a headed back pass to level the scores.

Hakin defended well through Nick Jones, Ali Davies, Paul Hannon and Adam Collins, whilst so they were always in contention, with Dawes joining Simon Atyeo and Adrian Roberts putting in the hard yards.

The Vikings could easily have taken the lead, as chances fell to strikers McCarthy, Jones and Price, but all failed to capitalise and Gerallt Hughes headed the winning goal for Pentyrch.

It was then off to the Rose and Crown in Carmarthen on the way home, where for the Manchester United supporters in the team, the day was about to get a lot worse!

Hakin’s next fixture is on Sunday 14th November, when they entertain Pontyclun.

Hakin over 40s: Richard Bland, Nick Jones, Adam Collins, Ali Davies, Paul Hannon, Simon Atyeo, Gary Dawes, Michael McCarthy, Paul Jones, Matthew Price, Adrian Roberts.
