Jake Clarke selects best St Florence team over last 20 years

St Florence

Jake Clarke is the current fixture secretary at St Florence and has been a vital player for most of the last two decades as well.

This season the side has finished mid table in Division 4 and have been busy this summer - taking part in an epic running challenge to support Lewis Desforges after he was seriously injured in a RTC.

PembrokeshireSport.co.uk wishes him well with his recovery.

It was former club captain Clarke who was tasked with picking their best squad of the 21st century, and here’s what he came up with:

GOALKEEPER – WILL THOMAS

Will made his St. Florence debut at the age of 16 and quickly established himself as goalkeeper within a few seasons where he was always dependable. Can also play anywhere on the pitch and be one of the best in that position.

RIGHT BACK - JAKE CLARKE

Jake has been a reliable part of St. Florence for over a decade now. Beginning as a young player, and then breaking into the starting 11 before eventually going on to captain the side for a few consecutive years. His work rate and determination make him a valuable player to the squad.

CENTRE BACK - BARRY WOLVERSON

Barry is another former club captain who always showed his passion and fight on the pitch and was a true leader to look up to. A composed centre back who was comfortable with the ball at his feet or in the air.

CENTRE BACK - BEN BLAKE

Ben is possibly the most composed man to ever pull on a St. Florence shirt. His ability to play the ball out from the back to making a last ditch tackle was always to perfection. His aerial ability was another strong point as he very rarely lost a header.

LEFT BACK - BLAYNE WHERRETT

If you ever needed a big tackle Blayne would not disappoint. For a player with such a small structure his strength was unmatched at times, as he could easily bully players twice his size off the ball. His left footed deliveries into the box always caused a problem too.

RIGHT MIDFIELD - JAMIE ROBERTS

Over the past 25 years Jamie must have made the most appearances of any St. Florence player. His ability to win the ball back then skip past a few players before surging into the box made him one of the deadliest players on the pitch. Always a player to give nothing but his best each game.

CENTRE MIDFIELD - PAUL 'DAVO' DAVIES

One of the finest defensive midfielders St. Florence have had. Never a flick or trick was seen as Davo stuck to the basics and rarely put a foot wrong. His positional play and tackling ability made him a vital player for many years.

LEFT MIDFIELD - PHIL EVANS

A player who loved to get forward but knew when to defend (even if he didn't want too) a true box to box midfielder. A strong all round player who had next to no flaws in his game. Phil would never stop running and always gave you his all every game.

FORWARD - COLIN BATLEY

A reliable player for St. Florence for many years, missing very few matches in the process. Constantly running, his work rate was 100% every game. His cross-shot always bagged him an impressive amount of goals each season too.

FORWARD - ASH SMITH

Another player who made his debut at 16. Current club captain for the previous season, Ash Has the ability to dictate a game and run the show. He is a player guaranteed to score goals and win you games wherever he plays on the pitch.

FORWARD - SCOTT SMITH

Quite possibly St. Florence's most technically gifted player. Scott made the most difficult things look effortless and had the natural ability to play at a much higher level. He once played a charity match in clown shoes and still scored a hat trick and won man of the match.

SUBSTITUTES

OWEN BATEMAN

With the ball at Owens feet he could dribble the ball past any player and always knew when to play the perfect pass. No matter which position he played you could guarantee he would be one of the best players on the pitch.

MARK 'TWEEDY' REED

Mark is a player who could literally play any position. A reliable goalkeeper and could even do a job up top if we were short. A talented all round footballer who would always give his all for the club

LEWIS DESFORGES

Lew is a player who will never back down from a tackle. No matter where on the pitch he plays he can be influential and give you 100%. I'm sure he will gladly tell you how he once scored 30 plus goals in a season too.

STEVE LUND

As we are not having a assistant manager we have sneaked an extra player onto our bench as it was impossible to leave Steve Lund out of the squad. Another player who would give you 100% and never accept defeat. A true rock in midfield.

MANAGER - STEVE WILKINS

A man who everyone respects in St. Florence FC. A strong leader from the sidelines and a manager who players wanted to play for and always listened too.
