West Wales Intermediate Cup – Round 2

Goodwick United 4 – Seaside 2

Top notch midfielder Rhys Jones scored twice which helped Goodwick United to an excellent cup victory over ten-man Seaside at Phoenix Park.

Last week this cup tie was postponed, however this week Phoenix Park was in pristine condition.

The West Wales Premier outfit found themselves down to ten-men with only fourteen minutes on the clock, Robert Thomas put in a strong two-footed tackle on Jago, which saw referee Stefan Jenkins pull out his red card.

Less than a minute later Nigel Delaney’s Goodwick outfit took the lead as Jonny Horgans’ direct free kick was parried by Seaside goalkeeper straight to Rhys Jones’ whose shot was blocked as it fell invitingly for debutant Tom Jago (who has signed from Merlins Bridge) who made no mistake with a close range tap-in.

On 24 minutes Goodwick doubled the lead as free kick specialist Rhys Jones made no mistake with his set piece which flew in the bottom corner, that’s how the score stood at half time.

Twelve minutes after the  break the visitors pulled one back as Jamie Jenkins’ free-kick beat James Gwilt as his effort found the back of the net via the post.

Nine minutes later, Goodwick added a third, Josh Woods’ pinpoint cross found Jones who headed home from inside the box.

In the 81st minute Goodwick added a fourth as Kyle O’Sullivan’s dangerous free kick fell kindly for skipper Scott Delaney who applied the scoring touch.

Deep in stoppage time Jamie Jenkins’ grabbed his side’s second of the tie, as he struck a carbon copy free kick which stunned Gwilt – but it didn’t matter as Goodwick held on firmly to win comfortably and they’re in the hat for the next round of this prestigious competition.
