Early Howells goal earns Bridge narrow win against Pennar

Merlins Bridge 1 - 0 Pennar Robins

A nightmare start for the away side as within 2 minutes, a mix up at the back and a stray pass evading team mates led to Bridge taking the lead from 20 yards with a well driven strike from youngster Iwan Howells.

But a positive reaction from the away side seen them dominate possession in the first 30 minutes creating minimal half-cut chances from in and around the edge of the home box.

The last 15 minutes of the first half was quite open and end to end with Pennar keeper Clark producing a wonderful one-on-one double save from the home sides second attempt to keep his side in it.

In the second period Mike Preddy’s Wizards came out to try and nullify Pennar’s shape, but proceedings continue to see the visitors dominate possession and the midfield battle.

But, The Bridge remained deep, compact and sat in to soak up pressure from Pennar attacks, but having all the possession without creating anything worthwhile in front of goal.

A number of aerial crosses into the area were dealt well throughout by Bridge centre back pairing of skipper Jordan Thomas and Morgan Richards.

With low driven crosses evading team mates and leading the away side to think “it was one of those days”.

Bridge were hopeful on the counter and had a number of opportunities to do so, with Pennar pushing heavily to get that elusive equaliser, Bridge’s Sam Nicholas somehow put one over the bar from three yards which looked harder to miss than to score.

The best Pennar chance of the game fell to substitute Noah Davison as he was played through by the influential Grimwood for his one-on-one shot to narrowly skip past goalkeeper Ben Henton’s far post from 18 yards.

Minutes later another sub Connor Willis had a great chance with five minutes remaining to get a shot away from eight yards but he couldn’t get it under control.

The Bridge defence stood tall and couldn’t be broken down, and that’s how the game remained with the scoreline at 1-0.
