Runners-up Carew

An inspired opening spell of bowling by Will Phillips helped Narberth Youth beat their counterparts from Carew in a low-scoring Ormond Plate Final at Lawrenny – his four-over stint earning him figures of 4 for 11 as Carew were reduced to 12 for 5.

He found support from Elliott Evans, Tomos Lewis and Seth Woodhouse as only Corey Hall (10) and George Waters (19) managed double figures for Carew, along with 15 extras.

Such was the impact that Phillips made that he removed talented batsmen like Rhys Richards, Kyle Rossiter and Iori Richards without scoring and Rhys Eynon for a single; two clean bowled, one adjudged lbw and one from a very sharp one-handed return catch.

Wickets continue to tumble

Elliott Evans trapped Will Allen for a duck as Corey Hall surveyed the damage at the other end – but then Evans bowled him for 10 and removed Connor Davies for 3 to finish with an excellent 3 for 16 analysis.
At this stage there hadn’t been a single boundary off the bat but Carew No 7 George Waters struck two fours in his top score of 18 before he was lbw to Tomos Lewis in his 1 for 17 stint from three overs.

Two more boundaries came from Taine Brace but Seth Woodhouse bowled just one over and had him caught for 9 at mid-off by Shay Norcross – and quickly followed up with a second wicket for only five runs as Elliott Evans took the catch at mid-on to remove Jack Badham for 2. Ethan Hall finished undefeated without scoring and it was only the addition of 15 extras that took Carew to 58 all out.

Carew battle hard but unable to gain enough momentum

It says much for Carew’s battling spirit that they didn’t give up and Taine Brace raised their hopes as he bowled Tomos Lewis for a single – but Elliott Evans (10) and skipper Wil Nicholas (19, including two fours) settled Narberth nerves a little, until the former was neatly stumped by Will Allen off Ethan Hall and Nicholas was well caught by Iori Richards off Jack Badham, who also shifted Will Phillips (8, stumped by Allen) and Seth Woodhouse (0) to return fine figures of 3 for 10 in only two overs.

Shay Norcross belted two boundaries before he was run out for 9 but Harri Harries and Matthew Cockwell were there at the end and scored a single apiece, alongside 10 extras, and Narberth were victors in only 10.3 overs.

The Ormond Youth Plate was presented to Narberth skipper Wil Nicholas by Mrs Jennifer Griffiths, a member of the Lloyd family who sponsor the competition – and Mrs Lloyd also presented the Man of the Match trophy to Will Phillips on behalf of sponsor Phil Tallett, who is a member of the county club executive committee.
