The People Who Count in Pembrokeshire Cricket - Part 2 - September 2025

PembrokeshireSport.co.uk  is very proud of our unrivalled coverage of local cricket but readily admit that a huge factor in such blanket coverage relies on fantastic support from wonderful scorers in a range of clubs who supply us with scores and other match details - and that is why we gratefully dub them:
THE PEOPLE WHO COUNT!

Interestingly, the majority of them started because their husbands and/or children were involved - and they have now extended their expertise to such a level that they also spread the score lines nationwide on the ‘Play-Live Cricket’ app, whilst the fellers involved tend to rely more on their scorebooks - but still take pride in making them look like works of art!

Over the next couple of weeks, we hope to mention as many as possible,  and this week we have our second batch to mention so if your club has a scorer who does a great job outside the top two divisions then do let us know – and to all of them, old and young, we say a huge thank you for your unswerving support – AND SINCERELY HOPE WE SEE YOU AGAIN NEXT SEASON!

Julie Davies (Carew) 4. Julie Davies (Carew)

Julie is another scorer who started as a raw novice because her son Rhys was leading the team and they were without a regular scorer - and so it was nice this season that she was scoring all season because her baby boy was at the helm again and Carew were worthy league champions!

She would certainly have a strong claim to be the most decorated scorer in terms of medals over the last few seasons because she scores to help out all the Carew teams at every level - and a measure of the respect and fondness in which she is held can be gauged from the fact that the hard-nosed old-timers in the Carew 2nds team organised a lovely bouquet of flowers for Julie after she had scored for them and they had won the Alec Colley Cup!

Malcolm Thomas (Lawrenny)5. Malcolm Thomas (Lawrenny)

Malcolm is the second of our rare breed of male scorers to feature and he keeps his scorebook in pristine condition as part of the club’s history to be looked back on - unlike complicated computer programmes that could come and go, is his strong view!

Malcolm is ultra-reliable in producing details aplenty for us after being involved for 50+ years at the village club where he was born just down the road - and he is held in huge respect by all who know him because as well as being a very good scorer he trebles up as groundsman and clubhouse painter, plus any other jobs that crop up! If ever someone ought to be considered for an ‘unsung hero’ award it is Mt T!

Ann-Marie Jenkins (Whitland)6. Ann-Marie Jenkins (Whitland)

Ann-Marie is another top scorer who has served Whitland well for many years and is rightly held in high regard by newcomers to the role because she is also very adept at using the ‘Play-Cricket’ app and is happy to pass on encouragement to others. – ‘AMJ’ is first-class at handling nuisances like this writer, who always seem to phone up for details of scores and scorers at inopportune times.

Her later partner, Rob Benjamin, was also fully involved in the Whitland cricket and scored on a regular basis, as well as being an outstanding secretary of Whitland RFC, and the family involvement is further continued by their sons Sion and Gethin. Thanks Ann-Marie for being so patient with me!
