Pembrokeshire cricketers sought for next season's Wales XL Club

Simon Holliday

Wales XL Cricket Team:

The Wales XL Cricket team caters for talented cricketers from across the Principality who have the skill levels, commitment and time to play at a high level against their counterparts from regions right across England.

At the moment the skipper of this team, which is doing really well, is Simon Holliday, the in-form Haverfordwest Cricket Club all-rounder, with Hook CC's Craig Nutty having recently got involved and also enjoying himself. Both have a rattling good time and would love to hear from others over the age of 40 to boost Pembrokeshire's representation in this age group.

Season No 4 as skipper . . .

"This is my fourth season as captain,” Holliday told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk, “and I thoroughly enjoy being involved as we play about 20 fixtures a season, including matches against the Welsh Secondary Schools, some top  schools like Llandovery College, plus Pembrokeshire's senior  and under 19s teams.

"We are also competing in the National Championships at Over 40 level and this season has seen us doing as well as we ever have in the 18 years of the XL Club's existence.

"We beat North West England at Oswestry by eight wickets and then beat Scotland, playing at the neutral venue of Harrogate, in Yorkshire, and again finished on top so that we now have a final spot against South West England, which will be played at Lutterworth, in Leicestershire on 4th September."

. . . And still doing as well as ever!

Simon has already maintained his batting form with an innings of 115 and also claimed wickets, whilst Craig has also featured with the bat and took a vital catch in the previous round. Another highlight was a superb 95 from wicket-keeper Gregg Fisher, who plays regularly against Pembrokeshire for the South Wales Cricket Association, which included five big sixes in one over.

Simon tells us there is a great camaraderie so the invitation is out there for other talented over 40s in the county (and we know there is a considerable number who would feature well in this company.

So the message is out there from Mr Holliday,

"Come and join us and you won't be disappointed if you do."
