Llanrhian CC celebrate 75 years of existence in style with game against MCC

Llanrhian CC

Special anniversary match:

Llanrhian (80 all out) lost to The MCC (190-4) by 90 runs

Llanrhian Cricket Club celebrated 75 years of existence in style last Friday when they took on the MCC at their own ground in Llandigige.
Skippered by current Glamorgan spin coach Mark O'Leary, who oversaw the Welsh Fire women's side in 2021, a team representing the 'Home of cricket' had players travel from as far as places like Derby and Chepstow as they fulfilled a promise made last year to help mark the anniversary of 'The Cows'.
And it proved a unique occasion, with the visitors proving too strong for their hosts to run out winners by 90 runs.

Slowish start for MCC but they build a big total

It was O'Leary who opted to bat after winning the toss but with the outfield slow from the rain of the previous few days, Nigel Delaney's team started well as they kept the score down to just 53 for 2 after 20 overs.
Opening bowler Dafydd Williams had Tom Pearce caught by Rhodri Owen for 6, and Chris Cousens removed Jack Davies (7) via a catch in the deep from Delaney.
But then the away side accelerated, with opener Tomos Jones and Ollie Alsop putting on 112. The latter reached 54 after hitting two sixes and five fours, before falling LBW to Tony Kitchell. The veteran bowler also had Jon Denning caught by Tom Clarke for 7, but Jones stayed firm as he eventually finished 82 not out after 12 fours.
He was joined at the death by Tish player Karl Rhead, who along with Haverfordwest keeper Huw Scriven was making his MCC debut, and he added 13 not out for a final total of 190-4.
Both teams were then treated to an impressive tea from Angharad Reed and co but when action did get back underway, the quality of the MCC bowling was immediately evident.

Llanrhian struggle against quality bowling

Denning bowled four overs without conceding a single run while Alsop got the ball rolling by having Jonathan Strawbridge caught behind by Scriven (10) after two early fours.
The all-rounder would go on to take 4-14 from six overs, also trapping opener Richard Reed (12) after he'd offered early resistance.
At 39-4 it was Delaney who counter attacked, hitting four boundaries to top score with 24 before he was eventually ninth man out after being skittled by Pearce.
The latter would go on to wrap things up with a haul of 4-9, whilst Jones took 2-22, as 'The Cows' finished up 80 all out.
And the occasion, played in front of the likes of club stalwarts Alun 'Ush' Davies, Colin Holness and Morgan Miles, was rounded off with O'Leary and Delaney exchanging mementoes to mark the day, before both sided headed back to The Sloop Pub in Porthgain.

MCC delighted to be asked and loved the warm welcome

Also present was Gareth Davies, an MCC and Llanrhian member, who had initially helped set up the match along with Paul Rees, who co-ordinates the Welsh fixtures for the Lord's based outfit.
"It's been great to spread the word and the spirit of the MCC," O'Leary said afterwards.
"What a great ground - and we enjoyed great hospitality. It's really important for us to help honour anniversaries. These are massive occasions for clubs for Llanrhian to reach 75 years is fantastic."
