Noah Davies - with Ormond Youth CupAled Phelps starred as a combined Hook/Llangwm side overcame Carew/Saundersfoot on Sunday, taking four wickets in as many balls to break the back of the opposition’s innings to help his side to a huge first innings lead that ultimately secured the result, despite Carew/Saundersfoot’s brave attempts at repairing the damage.

After a delayed start in Carew, it was Hook/Llangwm who were put into bat and they made 123-7 from their 20 overs, with Noah Davies making 25 (one four), and fellow opener George James a vital 36 (three fours and two sixes).

Jack Nicholas also hit 20 (two fours), while John Mansbridge (2 for 28), and brother Tom (2-17), along with Carl Thomas (2-18) as the pick of the bowling.

Phelps pounces with four on the trot

And in the Carew/Saundersfoot reply, it was Hook/Llangwm skipper Noah Davies who struck the first blow by shifting Tom Mansbridge for a duck and Phelps who starred as he took four wickets in four balls en route to figures for 4-13 that left the opposition’s middle order in tatters, the last three all clean bowled as proof of his accuracy.

Morgan Grieve did make 31 (two fours) after opener John Mansbridge had hit 16, but Noah Davies, Ben Fairburn and Harry Nicholas all had two wickets each as the innings ended on 76 all out - a deficit of 47.

Aled Phelps is congratulated on his hat-trick Brave chase falls short

Batting conditions improved as the day wore on, and Hook/Llangwm posted 135-3 after another solid start from openers Davies (18) and James (40 - one six), while No 3 Phelps added 32 (one six) as he showed he could also bat as Tom Mansbridge (2-28) and Rhys Grigg (1-32) had the wickets.

It meant Carew/Saundersfoot needed 183 to win, but despite a brave effort, finished short on 137-9 as Grigg top scored with 46 (three fours and two sixes), ably assisted by Tom Mansbridge (25), John Mansbridge (21) and Morgan Grieve 21.

Harry Nicholas helped seal the win with 3-38, supported by Phelps (2 for 28), Callum Jenkins (2 for 26) and Keegan Codd (2 for 21) so it meant Noah Davies received the silverware on behalf of Hook/Llangwm, with Phelps the man of the match.
