Cricket Round-Up - 16th August 2025

Division One:

Carew cruise to vital title result

Cresselly 104 all out lost to Carew 271 for 7 by 167 runs

Brian Hall - outstanding batting in Carew win. Picture Susan McKehonThe eagerly-awaited ‘Clash of the Titans’ between Cresselly and Carew turned into an unexpectedly one-sided affair as The Rooks were asked to bat first, built up a huge score and then bowled out The Doves cheaply to knock them off their perch and claim top spot by 10 points with a game apiece left.

Both face tough tussles as Carew entertain Neyland and Cresselly must travel to Herbrandston so there is still an interest in where the silverware will go but Rhys Davies’s team know they hold the upper hand with this crushing victory on their old rivals’ territory.

The Rooks had solid contributions from Tim Hicks, Morgan Grieve, Simon Wood and Shaun Whitfield before former skipper Brian Hall topped their batting with a middle-order innings of maturity of 72 that included eight boundaries and helped establish such a massive score, despite two wickets apiece from Dan James, Charlie Arthur and skipper Tom Arthur in the opposite corner.

In sharp contrast, the Cresselly batting looked surprisingly frail as their top score 29 from Charlie Arthur as three wickets from Shaun Whitfield enhanced his claims as top all-rounder, supported by two wickets each for James Hinchliffe and skipper Rhys Davies, whose miserly nine-over stint conceded only 11 balls.
Iori Hicks and Joel Read also got amongst the wickets and maximum points – and a real chance of the coveted trophy – are very much in Carew’s grasp!

Cresselly Innings:
Charlie Arthur 29, Kyle Quartermaine 14, Griff Jenkins 12, Extras 13
Shaun Whitfield 3-36, Iori Hicks 1-35, Rhys Davies 2-11, James Hincliffe 2-21, Joel Read 1-1

Carew Innings:
Tim Hicks 35, Simon Wood 34, Morgan Grieve 52, Brian Hall 72,  James Hinchliffe 17
Dan  James 2-49, Charlie Arthur 2-41, Tom Arthur 2-40, Griff Jenkins 1-31

Llangwm suffer in the sun

Llangwm 29 all out lost to Herbrandston 328 for 6 by 299 runs

Harry Nicholas - superb innings of 175 not outAt the other end of the table, spare a thought for Llangwm as their misery continued with a devastating defeat by 299 runs  by Herbrandston at Pill Parks.

Herbie batted first and a magnificent undefeated innings of 175 by young opener Harry Nicholas launched them to their massive final tally in 45 overs, with 19 fours and 4 big sixes flowing from his bat. Skipper Robbie Hood and Aaron Bowled, back in first-team action, created cameos but 50 extras helped swell the score well past the 300 mark.

Then Herbie opening bowlers Charlie Malloy and Dean John waded in with five wickets apiece so that there was no batsman in double figures but it’s been said many times before this torturous season for Llangwm, they have stuck together in great adversity throughout this campaign and there is at least great admiration for that fact across the county, with every game fulfilled and next week, as they entertain other basement battlers Whitland, bringing a welcome respite for their players!

Herbrandston Innings:
Harry Nicholas 175*, Robbie Hood 43, Aaron Bowles 17, Kristan Bennett 15, Extras 51
Dom Asson 2-36, Mali Davies 2-49, Ollie Davies 1-45, Iwan Griffiths 1-10

Llangwm Innings:
Charlie Malloy 5-15, Dean John 5-12

Town take a tumble towards division two

Neyland 206 for 8 beat Haverfordwest 134 all out by 72 runs

Alan Webster - man of the match for NeylandIt looks as if Haverfordwest could be heading for division two after this latest heavy defeat at Neyland, which might have been by an even wider margin but for a terrific last-ditch partnership of 55 between Will Phillips, who looked one of the best Town batsmen from his No 9 spot, and the ageless Clive Tucker, who was still there at the end.

Neyland won the toss and batted, with solid knocks from Gregg Miller, Paul Murray, Dai Davies, Rand Danny Potter in support of a good half century from Alan Webster, plus too many extras, taking them beyond the 200 mark.

Then Webster, currently playing as well for Welsh Over 50s, laid claim to the man of the match status with three wickets alongside Andrew Miller as Dai Davies picked up a brace against his former club and Jack John finished things off.

So, The Town now  travel to Burton, trailing Whitland by 11 points, and hope that Llangwm can claim their first win of the campaign as they entertain eight-placed Whitland.

Neyland Innings:
Paul Murray 26, Gregg Miller 19, Dai Davies 36, Ross Hardy 18, Alan Webster 50, Danny Potter 14, Extras 30
Clive Tucker 1-22, Rhys Sewell 2-28, Jake Merry 2-41, Chris Phillips 2-28

Haverfordwest Innings:
Doug Johnston 18, Paul Tough 19, Will Phillips 41, Clive Tucker 15*, Extras 17
Jack John 1-30, Alan Webster 3-22, Dai Davies 2-23, Andrew Miller 3-20

Seasiders stroll to big target win

Saundersfoot 195 for 2 beat  Burton 191 for 9 by 8 wickets

Sam Franklin - runs and wickets again for SaundersfootThere was a high-scoring tussle at Saundersfoot as Burton rattled up a good score, despite messing about with their batting order – but the home side won at a canter with eight wickets and more than five overs still left.

Morgan Scale and Martin James were the early run-getters for Burton as they looked likely to finish with a much lower tally but Toby and Luke Hayman, batting in the unlikely positions of 9 and 10, shared a century stand to bring respectability to their total – but it was soon put in the shade as Tom Mansbridge and Nick Cope got The Seasiders off to a flier and Sam Franklin, who had earlier claimed three wickets, belted 73 not out alongside 25 extras and Saundersfoot assured themselves of a deserved top-four place in the final table.

Saundersfoot Innings:
Tom Mansbridge 30, Nick Cope 53, Sam Franklin 73), John Mansbridge 14*, Extras 25
Luke Hayman 1-53, Jack Davies 1-26

Oscar leads Lawrenny to high-scoring victory

Whitland 248 all out lost to Lawrenny 270 for 9 by 22 runs

Oscar Lewis - Runs and Wickets for Lawrenny teenagerOscar Lewis is still only 16 but is already playing for the county senior team and showed just why as Lawrenny kept Whitland pinned in the danger zone with his runs and wickets a major contributor with bat and ball.

He and Wil Nicholas batted really well to record half centuries alongside support from Troy Purslowe, Finley Lewis and Tom Cole, despite three wickets from Gopal Ramasamy for The Borderers as they opted to field first.

It says much for Whitland’s determination that they battled hard before going down by only 22 runs, thanks to Kevin Pearce, Jamie Thomas Gopal Ramasamy and Trystan Rees – and now they need to produce the same battling qualities next Saturday if they are to stay up!

Division Two:

Tish regain top-division status

St Ishmaels 245 for 5 beat Cresselly 2nds 166 all out by 79 runs

Andrew Pawlett - picked up four more wickets for TishSt Ishmaels celebrated the fact that they have made a speedy return to the top echelon and now, with a nine-point lead over Narberth they will be eager to take the silverware by beating Johnston at Glebelands in their last match.

Skipper Jonathan Pawlett again played a major role with the bat as he finished unbeaten and top scorer, as did his cousin Andrew in the field with four wickets from his canny left-arm spin.

Phil Llewellyn got Tish off to a pacy start and also batting well were Lewis Rhead, and Andrew Pawlett, ably assisted by ‘Mr Extras’, despite the Cresselly bowling efforts of youngsters Ollie Arthur and Tyler James alongside Mike Shaw and the ageless Ryan Lewis.

Corey Lewis batted well early on but home side had fire-power aplenty in the bowling stakes as Brennan Devonald and Andrew P did the bulk of the damage, assisted by Tom Williams and uncle Andrew, who finally combined to break up an excellent stand of 61 between Shaw and Milo Jones.

St Ishmaels Innings:
Phil Llewellyn 44, Lewis Rhead 38, Jonathan Pawlett 68*, Andrew Pawlett 49, Extras 26

Russell Watkins - helped Llanrhian gain a vital victoryLlanrhian’s brave come-back from a slow start to the season continued with this easy win against already-doomed Burton at Oatfield Park, although they know that their status still depends on being able to make up a current seven-point deficit behind Carew 2nds – but in the knowledge that although they play a difficult home match against Pembroke,  the Rooks’ Reserves have to travel to Narberth!

Johnston 185 for 6 beat Hook 184 for 9 by 4 wickets

Leigh Walters - classy cameo for JohnstonJohnston entertained near neighbours Hook at Glebelands as the visitors elected to bat first, built a sizeable score, but were chased down as Lee Summons and co batted well again - Summons had scored centuries in their two previous matches but only managed 50 this time but, classy player that he is, would have been mad at getting out!

For Hook, the runs came from Liam Miller, Aled Phelps and George James, another knock from a classy player., as Steve Mills Jnr, Nick Davies and Roshan Anyal shared six wickets.
