Cricket - Division 2 - Most wickets 2021

Steve Mills - Llangwm

‘Millsy’ proves his worth at Pill Parks

Aled Phelps - HookJack Davies - BurtonSteve Mills is perhaps best known as a prolific run-maker at Pill Parks but in the 2021 campaign he certainly showed his worth for Llangwm as a bowler as his haul of 41 wickets helped them take the section silverware comfortably.

Five victims behind him was talented young all-rounder Aled Phelps from neighbouring village Llangwm, whilst the third slot 35 wickets was another very good all-rounder in Burton’s Jack Davies, who also featured, with his 18th slot in the batting stakes made him one of only four players to feature in both tables – but more of the others later.

Jack also had the best individual figures in a match with a splendid 7 for 19 haul, with no six-fors but seven having five wickets in a match, with ‘Mills’ 5 for 8 being the most miserly haul- and George Smith (Pembroke Dock) also caught the eye as a very talented all-ropunder at Imble Lane.

There was no doubt, however who, on paper at least, was the most accurate, since another talented young player from Pill Parks in Joe Phillips,  achieved 46 maiden overs in his total of 110.4 overs, something that was all the more praiseworthy because his home track is regarded as one of the better playing surfaces in the county.

Still life in the ‘Old Timers’

George Smith - Pembroke DockBarry Evans - CarewMoving from the young players who abound here it is also nice to see Carew Seconds’ skipper Barry Evans claiming fifth place for his wily slow left-arm deliveries that earned him 29 wickets – with others now in the autumns of their careers were Kristan Bennett (8th from Herbie), Matthew Holder (ninth from Hook), Nick Daley (13th from The Dock) and Paul Nicholas (another Herbie in 14th spot). So well done indeed you old timers!

Going back to the all-rounders who appeared in both disciplines, we have to pick Peter McGilloway (Lamphey) as our nomination for the non-existent prize in that category because as well as popping up in tenth place here, he was also a creditable third with his bat.

Peter’s fellow opening batsman David Blackwell (tenth in that area), also featured here with 19th place and George Smith (Pembroke Dock) was 17th here to go with 4th in the batting – so well done to that quartet!

The Dock actually had four bowlers in the top 20, with three each for Llangwm, Hook and Herbie) – with Kilgetty and Haverfordwest 2nds failing to feature in a season to forget for them as both were relegated.
