Cricket - Best Performances - Week 5 - 24th May 2025

Dave stars with amazing all-round performance for Lamphey

There is absolutely no doubt about the star performer this week because Dave Blackwell beats off the strong challenge of others across the divisions with his all-round performance that led Lamphey to victory against Hook Seconds.

Hook had started really well as their opening pair of Ifan Williams (50) and Bradley Flood  (27) had put on 70 but then Mr B came on and grabbed an unbelievable haul of NINE WICKETS for only SIX runs that reduced Hook Seconds to 112 all out.

Included in that haul was a hat-trick (and it could have been four in four balls if a catch had been taken) as Hook’s youngsters found him unplayable – and then Dave joined Peter McGilloway (51 not out) in taking Lamphey to a 10-wicket victory as he contributed an undefeated 55 to round off a memorable afternoon!

There are so many talented youngsters playing nowadays and Cresselly seem to have more than their fair share of them as a tribute to the way they are nursed along by the old-timers at the club – and in Division Two LEWIS MASON (15) is the latest to shine as he hit a magnificent 107 (13 fours and 3 sixes) for their second string in their local derby against old rivals Carew 2nds in a very high-scoring game where his major support came from NEAL WILLIAMS (79), a regular in the Welsh Over 60s team who was top scorer last week and the previous week stroked 127 not out.

SIMON WOOD has been a class act for many years and has played Seniors World Cup matches for Wales -  and in the same game stroked his way to 98 not out alongside SCOTT RICHARDS (77) but they still lost in a game that produced over 50 runs in 80 overs!

Staying in Division Two, St Ishmaels beat Llechryd by 10 wickets thanks to PETER BRADSHAW (77 not out) and PHIL LLEWELLYN (71 not out) chasing down a score of 150 with plenty of overs to spare.

The top match in the Second Division saw unbeaten Narberth and Pembroke meet at the Lewis Lloyd Ground, with the home side squeezing home by only three runs as LOUI  DAVIES led their batting with 78.

Top scorer in Division One was PAUL MURRAY, who has been in terrific form for Neyland but is getting out when close to three figures, as he did yesterday when he hit  15 boundaries to reach 97 but then was caught against Lawrenny by Troy Purslowe off Jamie Lewis.

There were also a couple of excellent bowling figures in the top echelon as Cresselly skipper TOM ARTHUR claimed 6 for 25 to help his team beat Whitland easily – and SAM FRANKLIN (5 for 9) did the same as Saundersfoot finished their game at Pill Parks against Llangwm in a game that was completed in one hour!

Pride of place in Division Three must go to JONATHAN WILLIAMS, who had scored 70 the previous week for Hundleton and helped them beat neighbours Stackpole with a splendid 109 not out alongside skipper Craig Williamson’s 61. Known to all as ‘Taffy’ he had volunteered to step down this campaign to skipper the second team but showed there is still life in the old dog as he is also playing for the Pembrokeshire Seniors!

In Division Four, Saundersfoot needed only 82 to beat Tish Seconds but opener SIMON STANFORD was clearly in a hurry as he blitzed a boundary-laden 65 not out of them and finished in his big-hitting style with a big six!

RHYS LEWIS is only 16 but is a cracking footballer with Haverfordwest County Academy and showed he is following in the family sporting footsteps as he grabbed 5 for 6 for Carew Thirds against Narberth Seconds and, finally, we say well done to OLLIE ROWLANDS for his excellent 87 for Cresselly Thirds against Herbrandston Seconds!
