County just miss out to experienced SWCA

Pembroke County CC

Inter-League Friendly Cricket:

South Wales Cricket Association (150 for 8) beat Pembroke County Cricket Club (149 all out) by 2 wickets

Venue Ammanford
Scorer: Natalie Thomas (Haverfordwest)

Pembroke County went down to a narrow defeat at Ammanford as they took on old rivals the South Wales Cricket Association but there several plusses for the county selectors and skipper Sean Hannon, one of the main ones being the inclusion of a number of talented teenagers and others beginning to make a name for themselves alongside some experienced players who were able to guide them through.

The opposition included four players taking part in the Welsh Premier League and they played a considerable part in their win so Pembrokeshire will have benefitted from the chance to play against such quality opposition.

Put in to bat, Pembrokeshire lost opener Jack Harries (Pembroke) without scoring but Paul Murray (Neyland) and Harry Nicholas (Herbrandston) advanced the score steadily before Murray departed  for 14 in 46 deliveries as the normally-speedy big hitter was kept relatively quiet by the accurate home attack which included Welsh Premier bowlers Will Collinson (Dafen) and Owain Davies (Ammanford).

Morgan Lewis (Cresselly also went early but Nicholas (27, including three fours) was joined by Charlie Arthur (Cresselly) who sped to 37 in only 19 fours as he belted a boundary and five big sixes in only 19 deliveries – but then got out looking for another big hit.

Lee Mason (Cresselly) had originally been 12th man but was called in to play but was caught at square leg trying to sweep before another teenager in Charlie Malloy (Herbrandston) also went cheaply before ‘old timers’ Rhys Davies and James Hinchliffe (both Carew), respectively scored 15 and 23.

Sean Hannon and Christian Phillips (Cresselly) chipped in with a few late runs and the county ended on 149 all out, fewer runs than they might have expected but at least something for them to try and defend.

And Pembrokeshire got off to a great start as the Herbie boys Nicholas and Malloy combined to remove Tom Blake for a single but them Watkins and Blake produced cameos in support of Ben Edkins (Llandyssul), who reached 37 with five fours and a six before he fell to the clever off-spin of Rhys Davies, who finished with fine figures of 4 for 18 as he also shifted Mark Blake, Walters and Jamie Davies.

Williams helped the home cause with 15 runs but they keynote innings came when Luke O’Connor (Dafen), whose dad Leighton has graced Pembrokeshire Cricket, both indoors and out, stroked six boundaries in his undefeated 39 and Owain Davies (13 not out) saw the SWCA to victory 34.1 overs.
