County Cricket - Pembrokeshire Ladies play well to beat Newport Ladies
Pembrokeshire Ladies (184 all out) beat Newport Ladies (149 all out) by 35 runs
Venue: The Racecourse, Haverfordwest
Umpire: Chris Stapleton & Mike Read
Scorers: Peter Bettely

Pembrokeshire Ladies continued their matches in the top echelon of ladies’ cricket with an excellent win against a Newport team that was without several key players chosen to play elsewhere but that takes very little away from an excellent performance by Sam Rossiter and her team, but for once the Pembs skipper failed to make an influence on the game as she was trapped ‘Leg Before’ and was unable to contribute any runs to their total after batting first.
But a major contributor was ‘extras’ as Newport somehow managed to concede a massive tally of 70 runs, made up of 39 wides, 12 no balls, 12 byes and 7 leg byes before the county was finally dismissed for 184 with four balls of their allotted 40 overs unused!
Leading the way for Pembs was opener Jemma Phillips (29) as she batted patiently and settled things down after the early losses of Emilia Wilson and Rossiter, with Rhiannon Morgan (20) doing well at No 4.
Katy Jenkins managed double figures and Olivia James batted really well, with two boundaries in her 27 not out before she unfortunately sustained a hand injury and was unable to bowl, which was a major disappointment for the homesters because she is a more than useful all-rounder.
But the lower-order batsmen failed to bat long, although Fflur Davies did score two boundaries and Jodie Lewis chipped in with nine runs against accurate bowling from Abby Westwood (3 for 32) and the other Newport bowlers.

Newport lost opener Melody Blackmore was run out for 6 but then Sophia Williams (43) stroked seven fours in her 43 alongside Safa Mohammed (45, including two fours) as they moved strongly to 92 for 1 before being respectively removed by Rhiannon Morgan and Lowis Hughes.
Main strike bowler Emilia Wilson had bowled only four overs, three of them maidens, before she was unable to carry on through injury but helped out as keeper since Sam Rossiter had rweaked a muscle doing the job - but Hughes and Fflur Davies restricted the Newport run-rate whilst taking wickets – and three run outs certainly didn’t help their cause as only Abby Westwood managed double figures before Bobby Neale came on in time to grab the last visiting wicket.
And although they conceded 29 extras (mainly wides) it was relatively little in contrast, and Pembrokeshire Ladies were good value for victory in the final analysis!
