Carew stroll as Town miss catches
2025 Alec Colley Cup Final:
Carew Seconds (153 for 8 & 167 for 7) beat Haverfordwest Seconds (77 all out & 124 all out) by 119 runs
Umpires: Chris Stapleton & Huw Simpkins
Scorers: Julie Davies & Natalie Thomas
Man of the Match: Corey Hall (Carew)
Adjudicators: The umpires
Venue: Treleet Ground, Pembroke

Haverfordwest Seconds’ captain Matthew Vaughan elected to bat second against their counterparts from Carew and made early inroads in the strong opposition batting line-up as they removed the dangerous Morgan Grieve in Keiran Williams’ first over and then the same bowler struck again when he forced Welsh seniors’ international Simon Wood into giving Vaughan a catch
But from then on, they chased leather for a lengthy spell as Scott Richards and Jonathan Rogers dramatically increased the tempo, assisted by a lot of dropped catches, with one unfortunate fielder downing five on his own, as they added 78 runs before Richards finally departed for 76 in only 39 deliveries, with nine boundaries, with skipper Vaughan the bowler and Doug Johnson taking the catch.
Rogers, who has played infrequently this season, added 32 before he was bowled by Simon Williams, and Vaughan finished with 2 for 19 as reward for his accuracy - and a very challenging score to chase of 153 for 6 wickets.
Town find it hard-going in a misfiring run chase
Haverfordwest struggled almost from the outset and that Carew score assumed mountainous proportions as Morgan Grieve stumped Paul Tough off George Waters, who later bowled top scorer Ashley James for 27 (two fours and a six) in his miserly 2 for 6 spell from four overs – matched at the other end in terms of accuracy by Joel Read.
Ashoka Sanavirathna contributed 12 but became the first of Corey Hall’s excellent 4 for 32 haul as he was well-caught by Nick Scourfield, who later sustained an ankle injury after he tumbled over the boundary as he stopped a boundary.
Other than James, no-one else managed more than four runs and they finally ended up with a lowly tally of 77 all out from 18.4 overs as Joel Read and Sion Jenkins also bowled well for The Rooks - and The Town went in to an excellent tea with a deficit of 76.
Carew pile on the punishment
Any hopes of a respite when Carew batted for a second time quickly disintegrated as Morgan Grieve sent the first two deliveries over the boundary rope - and although opening partner Scott Richards fell for 11 runs the run rate actually increased as Grieve and Simon Wood shared a partnership of 86 in double time.
Grieve eventually departed for 58 made from only 23 balls, including three fours and five huge sixes, stumped by opposing keeper Soulsby off the left-arm spin of Simon Williams, and Wood followed to the same bowler for 42 (six fours) thanks to a good Ashley James’ catch - in an excellent spell of slow bowling that earned him figures of 4 for 27.
Three wickets fell in quick succession as Carew sought yet more runs but only John Rogers managed double figures before Joel Read and skipper Jacob Knox ended with 20 runs that propelled The Rooks to a score of 167 for 7 - and a mightily-daunting target for Haverfordwest of 244 runs to win!
Town try hard but unable to string stands together
Haverfordwest hopes of an unlikely win were soon in tatters as the free-scoring Paul Tough gave a catch to skipper Knox without scoring – and George Waters struck again to shift Max Rodrigues for 14 to leave The Town on 23 for 2.
Two of The Town’s four doctors in Ashoka Senavirathna and Doug Johnson then dug in well to add 49 runs in reasonable time before Ashoka (14) gave Corey Hall The Rooks’ first wicket, followed by a vital second scalp as Waters caught Doug Johnson for a hard-hitting 40 that contained five fours as his start to his innings and eight in total.
The loudest cheer of the match was reserved for Nick Scourfield, playing in his 25
th major cup final for Carew in a long and distinguished career, who bravely defied his earlier injury to field in the gully and take a tumbling catch to shift Ross Dewstowe for 19 – and hall added his fourth wicket when Morgan Grieve pouched a catch just after Ashley James had belted one of the biggest sixes of the afternoon and tried in vain for another.
Dylan Lee, the youngest player by far in the Haverfordwest team, played some nice shots in his innings of 14 but Waters’ return saw him shift Lee and Simon Williams to give him a deserved 4 for 24 analysis.
And finally . . .
Joel Read finished things off by bowling Town skipper Vaughan and Jacob Knox was presented with the Alec Colley Cup by Pembroke president Kevin Jenkins to give them four wins on the trot. Dave Brandon, the county chairman, rightly thanked Pembroke for hosting the final, as tradition demands, the umpires and scorers, ground staff and tea ladies. He also congratulated both teams on the spirit in which the game was played and PembrokeshireSport.co.uk for its full coverage of the competition.
Chris Stapleton and Huw Simpkins chose Corey Hall, easily the youngest player in the Carew team, on his eight-wicket haul during the game and a deserved player of the match winner, to round off an enjoyable game but one where Haverfordwest let the occasion get to them and paid the inevitable consequence against such an experienced Carew team!
