Neyland skipper Sean Hannon recieves the cupNeyland continued Pembrokeshire’s proud record in indoor league cricket as they won the Welsh Indoor Cricket Championship for the third time in four years by accounting for strong and experienced teams from Ynystawe and Gorseinon in Swansea.

Sean Hannon’s redoubtable team overcame the unavailability of several players to demonstrate their remarkable strength in depth, with all six contributing to two victories that not only earned them the Welsh silverware but now sets them on the road to the UK Finals at Lord’s as they will no travel to take on the winners of the Herefordshire area at the next stage.

Neyland served notice of intent as they took on Ynystawe in their first match and strolled through without losing a wicket – and although they were pushed much harder by Gorseinon they held their nerve as talented teenager Geraint Rees claimed two wickets in the final over of the match, including someone who had scored 50, to show what a terrific team they really are.

Match One:

Ynystawe (85 all out) lost to Neyland (87 for 0)

Only Ceri Durke (30) and Phil Bendle (37) ever looked settled against Neyland’s pace attack, which was superbly led by Nathan Banner. His three overs saw him take 1 for 15, with no runs coming from over half his deliveries. The Hannon twins also bowled good spells, with Patrick claiming 2 for 28 in his 2.4 overs and Sean relinquishing his gloves to Paul Murray and picking up 1 for 22 in three overs.

Ashley Sutton also played an influential role with 2 for 20 and there were good catches from Patrick Hannon (2), Sean Hannon and Sutton.

 Neyland scorers
Neyland set out against Gorseinon knowing that another Welsh crown was within their grasp and a typically determined start to their innings saw Paul Murray (30) and Ashley Sutton (32 not out) setting them on the road.

They inevitably lost wickets in a late chase for runs but Banner, Sean and Patrick Hannon, plus Geraint Rees, made small cameos and the opposition bowlers were under so much pressure that they conceded 27 extras to take Neyland to a substantial, but not massive, final total.

Gorseinon didn’t find it easy going as Neyland fielded well in support Nathan banner, Sean Hannon and especially Ashley Sutton (2 for 9) – and although Patrick Hannon received a bit of ‘stick’ he more than made amends with three excellent catches to end the innings.

Their main opposition came from Jon Hubshmidt, who retired on 25 and then came back to double his score before Sean Hannon pulled his master stroke by calling up Geraint Rees for the final over, when he bowled the Gorseinon top scorer and also grabbed another late scalp. So Neyland were deserved winners and added another title to their long list of successes in this competition, with Sean Hannon receiving the silverware from Mr David Williams on behalf of sponsor Nick Evans, of The Cricket Shop, Narberth.
