Table-toppers too strong for battling Borderers

It was closer than the final score suggested at Felinfoel as the leaders notched a bonus point win over Whitland.

The Borderers were bang in the contest at 19-13 at half time, but Foel finished stronger in the final quarter.

The home side had first half tries from flanker Josh Skelding, scrum half Luke Marsh and Eray Wilson, two of which were converted by Aled Roberts  - but Gareth Bennett and Dan Mason’s side kept in it through a try from winger Liam Price and a conversion and two penalties from No 10 Nico Setaro,

The visitors cross again in the second half through Llyr Ebsworth and Setaro again added the extras, but also conceded scores to Foel back row players Curtis Morris and Jordan Evans.

And outside half Aled Roberts did the rest, landing both conversions and two penalties.

“We were beaten but we will take encouragement from that,” said Dan Mason afterwards. “The final score didn’t reflect our performance.”

Saints slammed as All Blacks run riot

St Davids 8 - Neyland 104

Neyland were rampant as they ran in 16 tries to brush aside St Davids in a game that doubled up as a Pembrokeshire Knockout Cup quarter final.

The Pembrokeshire All Blacks crossed eight times in the first half to rack up a 50-3 lead, and then kept the intensity up thereafter to rack up a century of points.

The Saints did have a penalty from Matty Mcleod and a second half try from hooker Dan Murphy to show for their efforts, but had no answer to the attacking play of the visitors.

Tries galore for All Blacks

Winger Henry Macbeth boosted his season tally with four tries, and there were also hat tricks for full back Patrick Bellerby and centre Dillan McGaffin.

There were also two tries for winger Delme Bateman and No 10 George Evans, centre Alex Codd, and replacement Craig Power also crossed – and there was also a long range effort from veteran second row Mark ‘Russell’ James!

Evans was also on form with the boot, landing 12 of 16 conversions.

High praise from coach Richards

“Credit to St Davids the easy thing for them to do would have been to call the game off,” said Neyland coach Graham Richards.

“But we were struggling as well to put out a squad today and after two defeats it was important that we were ruthless.”

St Davids captain Rhys ‘Loshin’ Price meanwhile, praised his depleted side for turning out in difficult circumstances.

Mariners claim bonus-point away win

Cardigan 12 Milford Haven 32

It’s now six league wins from six for Milford Haven after they came away from the King George Vth Memorial Ground with a bonus-point win.

The Mariners led 10-0 at half time, and although Cardigan battled back after the break, there was no repeat of the thrilling finish the two sides produced last year as Nathan Williams’ men added four second half tries themselves, despite the defensive efforts of Marcus Castle, Emyr Harries and skipper John Lumb for the Teifisiders.

Milford scrum half Dan McClelland crossed for two tries, alongside scores from outstanding flanker Ryan Mansell, full back Joseph Kiff, winger James Trueman and No 10 Efan Morgan. It was Trueman who also landed the only conversion.

The home side had plenty of commitment via Andrew Fletcher, Dean Harries, Tom Taylor and Sion Hughes, with player coach and No 8 Colin Davies who led the way with a try from No 8, and second row Sion Phillips also ploughed over with No 10 Iwan John adding a conversion.

But it was The Mariners who took the spoils to remain amongst the favourites for the title and promotion.

Blues hold out for hard-fought win

Llanybydder 23 - Haverfordwest 29

Haverfordwest made it six wins from eight starts against a battling Llanybydder side which pushed them all the way before Steve Barnett’s team lasted the pace that little bit better.

The Blues took some time to get into their stride after a long trek but were still 10-6 ahead at the interval through a try be centre Dan Richards which was converted by outside half Craig Barnett alongside a well-struck penalty after good work up front by their tight five of Terry Lovell, Matthew Clayton, Jamie Zambas, Karl Busch and Gareth Phillips so that the back row of Morgan Leyton, Gareth John and Matty Phillips could link well with scrum half Lee Summons.

Llanybydder No 10 Steff Richards opened the scoring with a penalty and added a second three-pointer just before half time – and after the oranges his third kick on target reduced the deficit to a single point.

The Blues responded as Richards powered through for his second try, again converted by Barnett – but Llanybydder showed they were up for a challenge with a try from scrum half Llyr James which Richards goaled – and the home side took the lead with a try from flanker Tom Evans which Richards converted.

It stung Haverfordwest into awareness that this was a game they could lose and they raised the tempo to score a try by replacement Rhodri Harries to which Barnett added the extra points – and they sealed success when winger Tony Steiner marked his club debut with an unconverted try.

Laugharne ease home against basement battlers

Tregaron 6 - Laugharne 27

Laugharne made the long trek to Aberaeron and returned home with a bonus-point victory as they kept their try line intact with some solid defence and scored four tries as reward for some good handling in attack.

The visitors were 12-6 in front at half time through  a close-range try by second row Gary Jones and another from outside half Owain Thomas, which was converted by centre Tom Jameson.

For Tregaron there was a neat dropped goal from centre Huw Bonner and penalty by Ieuan Wyn Rees – but they were unable to add any second-half points as Owain Thomas claimed his second try for Laugharne alongside others from Gareth Spiers and Tom Rees to move them into fourth place in the section table with four wins from five starts – and Tregaron remain rooted to the foot of the table with six defeats from as many starts.
