Five-try Otters make a solid start to new campaign

Narberth 29 - Felinfoel 0

Johnny Morgan crossed for two triesNarberth RFC showed that they again have strength in depth for the new season as they defied the awful weather at the Lewis Lloyd Ground to beat a gritty Felinfoel side by running in five tries, two of them converted, and kept a clean score sheet, which pleased head coach Sean Gale.

“At this early stage we mustn’t get ahead of ourselves but overall it was a good start because we gave lots of players, a number of them new recruits or players returning to the club,” said Gale, “and we worked at developing the patterns of play we want, which is vital before the league season begins.”

As a result, there were good performances from Johnny and Matthew Morgan, Jake Jenkins and Lawrence Headlam amongst others in a game where they played three 30-minute segments, with all the scoring coming in the first two.

Good work up front by a tight five of Dai Jacobs, Kyle Hamer, Tom Kaijaks, Ryan Banner and skipper Alex Jenkins made sure of a steady supply of quality possession and it came as no surprise when Johnny Morgan, playing on the wing, sped over the whitewash for their first try.

The back row of Sion Jenkins, Andrew Cooke and No 8 Steff Phillips was also prominent and with their help, and some quick hands instigated by Rhys Lane and Ianto Griffiths, Lawrence Headlam added the second score.

Coach Sean Gale Other tries were claimed by ex-Tenby replacement centre Yannick Parker and Matthew Morgan came on to the wing and matched his brother with a well-conceived try only for Morgan senior to race over for his second score.

There was a conversion apiece for Ianto Griffiths and Jonathan Rogers as other replacements of the calibre of Tom Powell, Ryan Rees, Jake Finn, Rhodri Owen and others also contributing well.

It nicely rounded off an entertaining fixture in dire conditions and will have put The Otters in good heart for a tough but quality home friendly fixture on Saturday against Llanelli.
