Division Three (West) B:

The Seagulls are just champion!

Fishguard & Goodwick 69 - Neyland 7

Fishguard and Goodwick are the champions of Division Three (West) B after they comprehensively beat a Neyland side which deserves every credit for the way that they never threw in the towel against the Seagulls, who still have two matches to play but knew they had taken the section silverware after news filtered through that Milford Haven had lost at Aberaeron.Rugby Reports 11th April 2015

Seagulls’ skipper Simon James won the toss and elected to play into the stiff breeze and his team served notice of intent when No 10 James Griffiths sped to the posts from a tapped penalty before Rhys Lewis added an unconverted try after being put in the clear by Chris Shousha and skipper James.

Over-eagerness costs Seagulls points

Mark Riley missed a long-range penalty for the All Blacks and the Seagulls threw away several try-scoring chances through over-eagerness at key moments when a little steadiness would have paid dividends.

But their determination to throw the ball about was still rewarded with further tries by Ed Bendall, Shousha and Sam Kurtz, two of them converted by Griffiths to establish a 31-0 interval lead for the home side.

Straight back in attack mode – but consolation for the All Blacks

With the wind at their backs, the Seagulls were straight back into attack mode but skipper Chris Busby, alongside experienced lieutenants Adam Collins, Riley, Delme Bateman, Mark James and Andrew Slark kept the Neyland defence working hard.

But further tries came from Owain Morgans, Shousha again, Jone Vatu, Bendall once moreRugby Reports 11th April 2015, plus Mike Jenkins before Neyland winger Ben Goodridge did well to intercept a pass and race 25 metres for a try which Riley converted.

It was no more than the All Blacks deserved but the Seagulls had the final word when yet another sweeping movement saw Mike Jenkins claim a try which Griffiths goaled – and then coaches Huw Evans and Nathan Jenkins celebrated gaining the silverware as reward for being the best team in the section throughout the campaign.

Otters eased out by students

Rugby Reports 11th April 2015

Narberth 10 - Cardiff Met 13

Narberth trailed the students of Cardiff Met by 13 points at the interval but had hopes of a comeback with the second-half breeze in their favour – but were unable to score any points in the final quarter and had talented full back Johnny Morgan red-carded after the game to compound their disappointment.

The students traditionally play fast, open rugby and were able to claim an unconverted try by full back Lewis Morgan after only four minutes, adding a second by centre Tyler Williams after outside half Jacob Chilcott had dropped a goal.

But the Otters covered well for the rest of the half and things looked promising for them as Ianto Griffiths slotted a penalty and then added the extra points to a try by powerful young prop Ollie Evans after a carefully-controlled lineout drive.

With 21 minutes remaining Narberth looked favourites to avenge a 32-21 defeat in Cardiff but a mixture of over-eagerness and taking of wrong options saw the students hold out and close the gap on the Otters in mid table.

Mark Heywood crashes over for Tenby's first try

Injury-hit Seasiders stumble against league leaders

Tenby United 10 - Kidwelly 34

Rugby Reports 11th April 2015Kidwelly maintained their spot at the top of the section table as they proved too strong for a Tenby United side which was already below strength but also lost skipper Gareth Jones (cut head), Will Crockford (ribs) and Luke Hansford (collar bone), all taken to hospital during the second half.

The Seasiders were only 13-5 adrift at the break after Mark Heywood scored their try in response to Kidwelly’s try by prop Berian Williams, which full back Tom Gravell converted to go with two well-struck penalties.

Tenby full back Damien Miller added a second unconverted try late in the game but Kidwelly replied with further tries by wingers Luke Marshal and Adam Davies, plus a late penalty try, all converted by the in-form Gravell.

Rhodri inspires Preseli Men

Whitland 21 - Crymych 27

Two second half tries by dynamic scrum half Rhodri Davies helped Crymych complete the double over Whitland at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn after they had beaten the Borderers 9-0 in the reverse fixture.

Davies, who has played for Llanelli, Llandovery and the Welsh Sevens team, returned to his home club as part of his getting fit again and he stamped his class from the outset. He probed at the home cover and helped his team establish a 13-9 interval lead as young fly half Steffan James landed three penalties for Whitland but the Preseli Men responded with good unconverted tries by winger Amir Jiwa-Walji and centre Emyr Williams alongside a penalty from No 10 Sam Phillips.

Then Davies took the game by the scruff of the neck in the second half as he sniped over for two tries, both converted by Phillips and although the Borderers played well to score a try brace from speedster Sean Coles, one converted by James, they were still behind at the final whistle and had to settle for a bonus point as Crymych travelled home with the full five points for their efforts.

Blues win basement battle

Cardigan 18 - Haverfordwest 28

Steve Williams makes a telling midfield break for The Blues
Steve Williams inspired Haverfordwest to victory over old rivals Cardigan in a basement battle at the King George Vth Ground, the blues leading 22-3 at the interval and fending off a strong recovery from the Teifisiders to gain revenge for a 6-3 reverse when the teams met at Merlins Bridge earlier in the season.

Veteran No 10 Williams went through the scoring card as he converted Scott James’ try after missing the two points before that when Darren Salmon raced clear for a try, landed a penalty and scored a first-half try to which he added the extra points.

In the second half he added a second penalty and notched a neat dropped goal to kill off Cardigan hopes

All the Cardis could muster in the first half was a penalty  by outside half Llyr Jones and they added second half tries by flanker Aled Meredith, Tristan Lewis and winger Rhydian Jenkins after the Blues had Zac France-Miller sin-binned.

But Williams organised the Blues’ defence well and picked up his six points to earn the man of the match label as his reward.

Division Three (West) B:

Committed Aber upset the form book

Aberaeron 20 - Milford Haven 7

Aberaeron upset the form book as they played some good rugby to knock a depleted Milford Haven side off the top of the table in a disappointing conclusion to the Mariners’ season.

The Mariners were without several key players and lost Dean McSparron to food sickness on the long journey to Aberaeron, followed by Adam Rees with a hamstring injury soon after the game started.

They came up against a committed Aber side in which the front row of Alex Stanton, Rhydian Harries and Chris Wozencroft excelled and were 13-0 down at half time as Rhodri Jenkins and Kieran Etheridge scored Aberaeron tries and Sion Evans kicked a penalty.

The Mariners did manage a try by Nathan Rees which Leigh Broome converted before later being shown a red card – but Aberaeron had the final word when Jenkins sped over for his second try, which Evans converted.

Ross leads Laugharne in style

Llangwm 7 - Laugharne 54

Ross Michael was the toast of his Laugharne colleagues at Pill Parks as he amassed 34 points in their 54-7 victory over Llangwm, speeding over for four tries and landing seven conversions from ten attempts.

The visitors had won 28-0 when the teams met earlier in the season and they were already 33 points in front at the half way stage as Michael grabbed two early tries which he converted, as he did when Grant Waters crossed twice, his only first-half failure being the conversion attempt when Gareth Davies crossed the whitewash.

Luke Brock claimed a try and conversion for the Wasps but Laugharne had further tries by Barry John and Michael (2), all of which he converted to complete his bag full of points.

Scarlets too strong up front for Carmarthenshire Saints

St Clears 12 - Pembroke 41

Dom Colman - another try for Pembroke powerhouse
Two tries by powerful back rower Dom Colman helped Pembroke round off their season in third place and ensured he was the Scarlets’ top try scorer for the season as he edged out the non-available Sam Smith.

The Scarlets were good value for a 24-12 interval lead as they had early tries by scrum half Jordan Gwilliam and flanker Cyle Weatherall before Ian Rees scored a Saints’ try which he also converted.

Pembroke’s pack power then earned them a penalty try and winger Sion Dalling also raced clear for a try, both converted by Lewis Davies, before the Saints managed a second try, this time by Tom Windsor.

The Scarlets remained in control after the oranges and Toby Williams scored a superb try, sandwiched in between two power-house efforts by Colman, one of them goaled by Davies.

Jones jolts Quins as Quins crumble

St Davids 62 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 7

Jack Jones - three tries in defeat for St DavidsJack Jones continued his superb run of form as he raced in for five tries against a beleaguered Pembroke Dock Quins’ to help St Davids easily win this basement battle and move out of the bottom two in the table as their reward.

The Quins had won 29-5 when the teams met at Bierspool but No 10 Jones ensured there would be no repeat of that result as he sliced through for three tries in the opening 15 minutes, one of which he converted.

The Saints were playing into the breeze but took a 27-0 lead into half time as centre Rhys Morgan and hooker Nathan Thomas also claimed unconverted tries as skipper Rhys Loshin Price and his pack held the aces up front.

The Quins did manage a try for prop Joe Roberts which outside half Nathan George converted but that apart it was one-way traffic in terms of points as centre Craig Challonder scored a try he also converted, as he did when second row Rhys T Price got on the scoresheet.

Centre Morgan added his second try, converted by Jones, who then sped through for his fourth and fifth tries, both converted by Challonder.
