The name of Trefor Evans is synonymous with cricket in Pembrokeshire because of his terrific contribution as a player and officer with Whitland CC, a hugely respected umpire and administrator with Pembroke County Cricket Club, and lots more – so we are delighted to recognise that effort by nominating him as PembrokeshireSport.co.uk’s ‘Star of the Month’ for August 2017.

Second team start

He started out as a player at Whitland CC when Dr Allen started a second team in the club and roped in this eager new teacher to the town – and Trefor played as a medium pace bowler and batsman for more than 25 years.

During that time he captained both first and second teams and made a huge number of friends around the county, some of whom are now umpiring colleagues.

In fact, 65 year old Trefor still enjoys a few games with the ‘Diehards XI’ which plays at Spring Hill most Friday evenings in the summer, although he admits to being a bit stiff then to umpire league games on a Saturday!

Trefor started umpiring and joined the County Club’s executive committee

He first donned the white coat 22 years ago because there were so many talented young players breaking through that he felt it was time to make room for them – and in the intervening years he has officiated at four Harrison-Allen Bowl Finals (including this year’s classic between Neyland and Cresselly), and every other final on offer in Pembrokeshire.

He has also moved wider afield with a two-day match between Wales and The MCCC at Pontarddulais, the Welsh Women, the Wales under 17s, Welsh University and Welsh Academy as proof of the respect in which his umpiring is held.

Trefor was elected on to the Executive and Finance Committee of the Pembroke County Cricket Club in 2002 and became its vice chairman in 2005 and then chairman in 2008, both for three-year stints – and he is currently assistant secretary.

On the umpiring front he has been Hon Treasurer of the Pembrokeshire Association of Cricket Umpires and Scorers since 1999 and the training officer for five years.

Also served Whitland RFC and the Junior Union well

Trefor is also a keen follower of Whitland RFC, having played full back for The Borderers as a youngster and later serving as chairman, being made a life member a short while ago. He has also been involved on the Pembroke and District Junior Union committee for an unbroken 32 years as Hon Treasurer (and also been chairman and president) – and again is a life member.

So it is easy to see why we were delighted to recognise his efforts by making him our ‘Star of the Month’ for August 2017 – and we wish Trefor many more years of involvement in local sport!
