The Seasiders warm welcomes are recognised by winning the Reg Jones Memorial Shield
Rugby News:
Reg Jones was a stalwart member of St Davids RFC for many years and he was long-time club secretary and even longer as a hard-working committee man - but it was as a rugby referee that Reg became best known, not only because he would willingly referee any match, anywhere at an any time, but because he was such a genuine character.
Outside of his family, rugby was very much a major part of his life and he was a regular at Lions’ tours to Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, plus Argentina and even Japan with Wales as an added bonus, with another well-known local referee in Keith Bryant (Treffgarne) as his fellow supporter.
Sadly, Reg and Keith both passed away a number of years ago and Reg’s family decided to donate a shield in his memory to the Pembrokeshire Society of Rugby Union Referees - and together they decided it would be appropriate to present it annually to the Pembrokeshire club which had given local refs the best welcome throughout the season.
The decision regarding its destination each year is decided by all the Level Two referees, who spend most of their time on the pitch with junior, youth and second-team games, as Reg did (Level Three referees spend quite a lot of their time officiating ‘Up the line’.)
The award has meant a great deal to clubs and Pembroke president Dilwyn Williams and long-time captain Scott Powell were delighted to receive it for the Crickmarren Club at the end of last season from PSRUR officers Chris Oliver, David ‘Paddy’ Byrne and Andrew ‘Twts’ Thomas.
This year it was Tenby United which was chosen by the refs, which was appropriate since the presentation was made after the final of the Mike Fry Under 17 Cup, another trophy in memory of a rugby stalwart eager to promote the game at this early age level.
And receiving it last week from ‘Paddy’ and ‘Twts’ was Tenby United chairman Harry Bolton, a former long-serving Seasider on the pitch and someone who has since worked tirelessly for the club from first XV down to the youngest participants at Heywood Lane since he took over the reins.
All three in our photograph are great ambassadors for the oval-ball game and PembrokeshireSport.co.uk was delighted to be there for this very special moment!
