The PDJRA (District H) Junior Finals Day - Sunday, 4th May 2025
Venue: Haverfordwest RFC
Five games of the highest quality engage packed crowds at the ever-popular age-group Finals
The 2025 Finals Day saw huge crowds flock to Merlins Bridge to watch some high quality rugby in the five age-groups from under 12 to under 16, although it has to be said that the finals for those younger age groups from under 7 to under 11, traditionally held on the same day, had a number of supporters saying that it was a pity the WRU had not allowed them to be played, preferring a special ‘Junior Festival Day’ on a different day so that early bubbly enthusiasm did not provide the early sparkle and enthusiasm to open the occasion.
Having said that, this day was packed with high quality rugby that showed the skills, pace and commitment from a good range of clubs who play under the ‘District H’ banner, a tribute not only to individuals but to the coaches, team managers, first-aiders and parents who help develop such players – plus the excellent referees who so freely give of their time, so well done all from PembrokeshireSport.co.uk!
The programme was another excellent means whereby sponsors could play a key role and congratulations must also go to organiser Ken Davies and his tireless team of Andrew “Twts” Thomas, Hannah Albery, Delyth Bryan and Graham Dalton, plus publisher Clive James for his superb presentation of the programme, which makes a marvellous memento for players and their families.
Under 12s Cup Final:
Under 12s get the big day off to a flier
HAVERFORDWEST 41 CRYMYCH 5
Referee: GARY WILKES Assistants: EDWARD HOWELLS & MARTYN RUDD - KICK-OFF 10.30AM
The talented young players from Haverfordwest and Crymych got the Finals Day off to a terrific start as both teams played attacking rugby at a furious pace, with high skill levels - but in the final analysis it was the Young Blues who enjoyed a comfortable win as they led 29-0 at half time and were always in control thereafter.
But that takes nothing away from Crymych as they tackled hard throughout and never shirked a tackle against opponents who had a powerful pack and pace aplenty behind the scrum as the back row supplied a constant supply of quality possession for half backs Harry Mallon and Iwan Jenkins to utilise and their first-half tries came from full back Hugh Ellerby, second row Jac Evans (two), prop Gennaro Algieri and replacement Caleb Rennie, two of them converted by centre Cai Llewellin.
It was a similar story after the break as Jack Wornham, Oscar Davies and Roman Williams, added further tries as the back row of Noah Elliott, man of the match Reuben Richards and No 8 Zac Gardiner, who scored try No 6, posed a constant threat.
It says much for Crymych that they plugged away, with half backs Sion Bryan and Regan James trying to use hard-won possession and with forwards Vinny Pegg, Morgan Davies and Hari Moore heavily involved - with their try by Hari Moore earning the loudest applause of the match.
Blues centre Cai Lewellin rounded off their scoring alongside a third conversion to take Haverfordwest home, in a final that was well refereed by Gary Wilkes.

Under 13s Cup Final:
Scarlets snatch victory with late come-back
PEMBROKE 34 NEYLAND 20
Referee: CARWYN EVANS Assistants: DYFRIG DELLER & ANDREW THOMAS - KICK-OFF 12 NOON
The under 13s final showed how players develop through the age-group process as Pembroke and Neyland produced an epic final where fortunes ebbed and flowed as the Young All Blacks were 20-12 at one stage in the second half but their Scarlet counterparts battled back to edge ahead by 22-20 and grabbed two late tries to see skipper Tyler Ayers collect the silverware.
Neyland took an early lead with a penalty by Ethan Holmes after good work by Logan Kinnersley, Casper Farmer and Yori Hubbock but Pembroke soon responded when quick hands from Ayers and Regal Slater put full back Tristan Williams in for an unconverted try - which was followed by another good try from prop Cassius Smith which No 10 William Haines converted to increase their lead to 12-3.
These set-backs caused Neyland to raise their tempo and strong-running centre Mesake Cataki powered his way over to reduce the deficit to four points at the interval as Karter Williams, Braidy Greggain and Max Rodrigues were involved.
With referee Carwyn Evans encouraging running rugby The Young All Blacks regained the initiative with a well-worked try by Dylan Worsley, converted by Holmes - and when No 8 Iestyn Roberts powered his way over Neyland were 20-12 ahead and looking favourites.
But Pembroke refused to submit and a second try by full back Tristan Williams hauled them back into contention before second row Dylan Elliott rounded off some good work up front as he put them back ahead at 22-20.
With six minutes left it was anyone’s game but a Neyland defensive error allowed No 8 Rhys White to add to Pembroke’s points tally and just before the final whistle full back Williams grabbed his hat-trick score and lay strong claims to be the man of the match.
Pembroke: 1. Cassius Smith; 2. Aaron James; 3. Jacob White; 4. Jaxon Aitchison; 5. Dylan Elliott 6. Jamie Cook; 7. Cody Culshaw; 8. Rhys White; 9. Lewis Heath; 10. William Haines; 11. Under 14s Cup Final:
Seagulls soar to hard-fought success
Fishguard & Goodwick: 29 Aberystwyth 19
Referee: MARTYN RUDD Assistants: EDWARD HOWELLS & GARY WILKES - KICK-OFF 1.30 PM
There was no shortage of action in the under 14s Cup Final, with referee Carwyn Evans handling the game well and referee Martyn Rudd using his wealth of experience to allow the game to flow whenever possible, with both teams ready to run the ball at every opportunity but also showing good defensive skills with some strong tackling and ability to win quality ball in loose play.
But in the final analysis it was The Young Seagulls who held an edge in finishing powers as they led 19-12 at half time and ran out winners by five tries to three as their reward, with play that would have pleased coach Rhys Williams, a former player plus, Matthew George and Sion Collella who are current Seagulls.
The Fishguard back row was very much in evidence throughout from their ball-winning skills, with flanker Owain Williams opening their account and then No 8 Fabien Fell charging over for two tries in the first half alongside two conversions by outside half Dewi George, who worked well with half back partner Iestyn Wilmott.
Prop Harry Smith, hooker Morgan Jones, Mikey Bulger and winger Steffan Cornock, normally a flanker, also caught the eye in an excellent all-round team performance - and Dewi George added try No 4 before and full back Charlie Mansell rounded of a solid display with a well-taken try to finish off the scoring for The Young Seagulls.
It says a great deal for Aberystwyth that they battled hard throughout and other half chances which came to nothing - but they created excellent tries by centre Ryan Joseph Jones, flanker Dewi Bretland and Elis Crowley, who started off at outside half but later switched to the wing. Two Crowley conversions completed Aber’s scoring as Tomos Hopkins, Ioan Howells Owain Lloyd and Tomos Hopkins played well to keep them in contention.

Under 15s Cup Final:
Aberaeron win on ‘’First Scorer’ rule in a tied match
HAVERFORDWEST 12 ABERAERON 12
Referee: TOM CAREW Assistants: JOE KIFF & DYFRIG DELLER - KICK-OFF 3.00PM
When talented No 8 Aiden Ashcroft scored the first try of this tight tussle for Aberaeron, little did he know it would have a double significance because under a new rule provided by the WRU for junior finals, in the event of a tied match there would be no periods of extra time or ‘Golden Points’ allowed – but victory awarded to young Aiden and his Aber team-mates who were the first from the club to reach a District H Final.
To be fair to Aber coaches and players they swallowed their undoubted disappointment and accepted the decision without any histrionics and so Aber made the long journey back up cardigan bay with the coveted silverware in a match where referee Tom Carew maintained firm control but gave the players their chance to show their prowess, although it would be fair to say that a mixture of basic errors and taking of wrong options saw the game rarely reaching the heights as the teams seemed to cancel each other out.
After that first score Aber also added a second try by full back Caden Briddon alongside a conversion from outside half Oscar Campbell as Steff Davies and Owen Hoyles caught the eye alongside Ashcroft in the back row, whilst winger Josh Doughty was chosen as their man of the match.
For The Young Blues there were tries from Seb Harries and George Dewstowe alongside a conversion from scrum half Jake John but as hard as Bobby Parr, Troy Brazell and Charlie Carter tried up front, plus good work behind from Taio Hein and skipper Connor Symmonds this was destined to not be quite The Young Blues’ Day!
Haverfordwest: 1. Charlie Carter; 2. Troy Brazell; 3. Bobby Parr; 4. Ayden Davies; 5. Ruan Prinsloo Thomas; 6. Luc Evans; 7. Teifion Davies; 8. Malakai John; 9. Jake John; 10. Taio Hein; 11. Under 16s Cup Final:
Seasiders storm back to win a fantastic final
Haverfordwest 17 Tenby United 24
Referee: JOE KIFF Assistants: TOM CAREW & CARWYN EVANS - KICK-OFF 4.30PM
This match was always felt would be the final of the day and that is just how it turned out as Haverfordwest looked hot favourites to win at half time as they deservedly led 17-3 but then Ollie Tucker and his Tenby team showed resilience to battle back with three unanswered converted tries to take the silverware.
Both teams had quality players who have enjoyed unparallelled success at club, county or regional level and as one respected pundit told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk that in view of the sheer pace and/or power on display there were more than a handful of players who could become professional players if they can maintain their commitment and steer clear of injury.
From the kick-off the match was played at a furious pace as the power up front of Blues’ forwards like, especially in their front five and back row of Caio Jones, Ewan Griffiths and Sean Bolger, with Harvey Thomas involved from the outset and half backs Freddie Reed and Connor Wesley calling the shots.
They set the scene early ion as outstanding centre Daf Williams spotted a gap through the middle from a Wesley pass and sliced through from 22 metres with a spectacular dive under the posts before adding the simple conversion.
Wesley also made an incisive break of his own to the left corner, continued by Harvey Thomas and full back Ewan Owen. but the final pass didn’t go to hand – but the pressure on The Young Seasiders continued and they doubled their lead as Daf Williams again sped through a small gap and after going to ground Freddie Red was in support and fed winger Ollie Thompson with the scoring pass before Williams added the extras.
A lesser side than Tenby might have caved in but with some wise words from experienced coach Mike Evans behind the posts it seemed to settle them down and skipper Ollie Tucker was outstanding (almost 30 carries during the game), plus fellow back rowers Will Diment and Iori Thomas alongside James Anderson, Rhys Barnes and Jamie Cogger finally gained some possession for talented No 10 Madoc Evans to land a penalty and det up other periods of pressure involving Jack Henson Tyler James and Ethan Lewis, playing at centre instead of his regular hooker’s spot.
Haverfordwest did manage a Daf Williams’ penalty to take his side in 17-3 at the break but it was already evident that there was going to be and the dramatic second half to match the first period.
And the old cliche ‘a game of two halves’ certainly prevailed as both sides went at it hammer and tongs and had half chances before Tenby prop Jamie Cogger ploughed over and Madoc Evans added the extra points – and then vice-captain Ethan Lewis did the same, Evans converted and the teams were locked on 17-apiece.
It set up a tense finale where The Young Blues knew a draw would see them win because they had scored first and their Tenby counterparts needed a hero – and found one in star fly half Madoc Evans who crossed the whitewash and added the extra points to snatch the verdict in a fantastic final that was a huge credit to both sets of players, their coaches, families and clubs.
It was a fitting end to a great day’s rugby which shows all that is good about our young players in District H – and it would do some of the top brass in the Welsh Rugby Union to see just what terrific things are done in Community Rugby by dedicated coaches and committed club coaches!
