Wanderers claim cup and league double in eight days

Narberth 14 - Llanelli Wanderers 22

Rhys Williams - the second row scored the opening try for NarberthJust a week after edging through against The Otters in the Premiership Cup, Llanelli Wanderers returned came to Narberth and used their greater forward power to return to Stradey Park with a deserved bonus-point win.

There were pre-match changes in the sense that Gruff Evans couldn’t play in the Narberth back row but they had a capable replacement in Josh Hamer – whilst The Wanderers loss was perhaps more significant because they lost outside half Rhys Williams, with an injury sustained in the warm-up so that centre Johnny George moved to No 10 and winger Owain Davies switched to centre, enabling Max Williams to start on the wing.

With the wind at their backs, The Otters opened the scoring with a close-range try by second row Rhys Williams, converted by Jonathan Rogers, but with The Wanderers holding an edge up front they led 10-7 at half time thanks to their pack platform, which allowed 18 year old flanker Sam Williams to plough through and then skipper Callum Williams to blast his way over from his No 8 berth.

Narberth made a  good start to the second period and after gaining a series of scrums in the Wanderers’ 22 it was scrum half Lewys Gibby that showed his class with a try, again converted by Rogers.

But with forwards like Lewis Ellar, Rhodri Owens and Ben Harries providing plenty of ‘grunt’ up front it came as no surprise when skipper Williams powered over the line, with Narberth’s former record points scorer, Nick gale, adding the extras – and then replacement  Luca Setaro, of the Whitland family fame, worked  a three-man move from a set-piece to put winger Lee Watkins over for the bonus-point victory which gave them their first win after three defeats – whilst The Otters remain in mid-table with two wins from four starts – but without a game next Saturday they will be looking to regroup in readiness for further challenges ahead.

Preseli Men miss out in second half

Gowerton 39 - Crymych 14

Eilir George - the full back played well for CrymychCrymych were in with a chance at half time as they had played against the wind and were 10-7 adrift but Gowerton showed why they are in the top four of this tough section as they took firm control up front and completed a third win from four starts.

Gowerton scored two unconverted tries in the first quarter but with Ben Cox, Dion Gibby and Tom Taylor to the front they pulled back seven points from a penalty try, awarded for a collapsed maul neat the home line.

The Preseli Men also added a second-half score – a try and conversion by full back Eilir George but Gowerton’s pressure paid off as they finished with six tries, shared amongst wingers Alex Jones (2), Lewis Hyatt (2), hooker Garan Williams and scrum half Tom ham. Outside half Samson Lawson contributed three conversions and a penalty.

It left Crymych with nothing to show in terms of points for a lot of hard graft – and they face perhaps an even tougher challenge next Saturday as they face table-toppers Tondu at Parc Lloyd Thomas.

Crymych: Eilir George: Aled Lewis; Jac Griffiths; Fraser James; Ianto Davies: Deiniol Mathias; Dafydd Phillips (Capt): Harri Vaughan; Lee Griffiths; Ben Cox: Dion Gibby; Matthew Freebury: Sion Wilson; Llyr Davies; Tom Taylor. Replacements: Osian Charles; Owen Fletcher; Rhys Davies;  Dan Page;  Kieran Edwards.

Seasiders have to settle for a bonus point in defeat

Yr Hendy 40 - Tenby United 30

Iwan Duffy and Bowyn Clark, both making their first team debuts for Tenby United, with Clark contributing 15 pointsTenby United will have been disappointed with this defeat against Yr Hendy, conceding 40 points,  after a good start to their campaign in this tough section, but their only consolation was the fact that they  managed to score four tries to travel home with a bonus point.

Another metaphorical bonus point for coach Jonathan Evans is the fact he had 18 year olds making their debuts in hooker Iwan Duffy, who battled hard beyond his years, and Bowyn Clark, who played at No 10 with flair and as well as his excellent try alongside two conversions and two penalties.

Three-quarter Max Brindley switched to second row and played well as seven regulars were absent through injury, but this team is going to take time to bed in – but the ever-present Dan Colley was again on the try sheet with No 8 Dom Colman and winger Gwion Jones.

For Yr Hendy, tries came from Teifion Evans, Rhys Harries, a penalty try, Lewis Thomas, Josh Hodge and Dylan Jones – and Stphen Shingler landed two conversions and two penalties to complete their scoring – and now The Seasiders have to regroup for a home match next Saturday as they play host to Swansea Uplands..

Tenby United: Geraint Jones: Kodi Bratcher; Liam Price; Jackson Gravatt; Gwion Jones: Bowyn Clark; Fletcher Broadhurst: George Thomas; Iwan Duffy; Ethan Morgan: Tom Barrass; Max Brindley: Jack Brown; Dan Colley; Dom Colman. Replacements: Hywel Baker; Kyle Rossiter; Dai Rogers; Tom Edmonds’ Jordan Asparassa.

Seagulls soar to derby victory

Whitland 20 - Fishguard & Goodwick 37

Osian Rowe - scored a vital try for Fishguard and GoodwickForward dominance paid off for Fishguard and Goodwick as they got the first win of their league campaign away at Whitland.

In swirling winds, the visitors crossed for five tries with the addition of No 10 Ollie Rothero, on permit from an inactive Neyland, proving crucial.

The visitors led 22-13 at half time despite playing against the elements, with hooker Liam Wilks twice driving over from close range and second row Cai Llewellyn crossing in similar fashion. Rothero twice converted and added a penalty.

But the Borderers stayed in it as No.10 Gareth Davies threw a dummy before cutting over for a try, with full back Shane Rossiter adding the conversion and two penalties.

For the visitors though, the bulk of the damage was done in the first 40 minutes and they pressed home their advantage after the break, with centre Mikey Jenkins excelling with his carrying in midfield. Winger Dan Cleary rounded off some good handling to score in the corner before Rothero slipped a pass for lock Osian Rowe to run in from 35 metres.

The outside half notched another penalty and conversion to justify his loan appearance, and although Stephen Brown scored for Whitland with Rossiter adding two more points, and hooker Matt Driver and winger Morgan Lewis among those to impress in defeat, few home fans could complain about the result.

Whitland: Shane Rossiter: Morgan Lewis; Lucas Dance; Aaron Cookson; Tom Day: Gareth Davies; Rhys Nicholas: Jonny Phillips; Matt Driver; Ceiron Evans (Capt): Trystan Bowen; Nick Greene: Thomas Iraia; Aaron Cross; Benji Kirk. Replacements:  Steff Jones; Sam Phillips; Ethan Aldred; Alan Proctor.

Cardis stumble against Tumble

Cardigan 14 - Tumble 20

Emyr Harries - scored opening try for CardiganThis home defeat left Cardigan without a win after three matches, whilst opponents Tumble are already in the top two with three wins from as many matches but for the first time unable to claim a bonus point as The Teifisiders fought hard throughout.

The home side were rewarded by their second bonus point in this campaign for coming within seven points of their opponents and with just a little more steadiness with ball in hand might even have snatched the verdict.

The Cardis actually took the lead after an even first quarter saw them open the scoring in 21 minutes as strong-running centre Emyr Harries rounded off some quick hands and outside half Jack Davies added the extra points.

But twice they relaxed and under the inevitable pressure they conceded unconverted tries by scrum half Iwan Morgan and loose head prop Geraint Flint to trail 7-10 at half time.

Tumble No 9 Iwan Morgan grabbed his second try which was converted by his influential half back partner Steve Hewittm who also kicked a penalty – but Cardigan picked up a deserved second score through hooker Luke Palmer-Davies – and Jac Davies’s vital conversion earned The Teifisiders that welcomebonus point!

Cardigan: John Lumb: Llyr Jones; Iwan John; Emyr Harries; Ben Rogers: Jac Davies; Ifan James: Will Brice; Luke Palmer-Davies;  Ben Hughes: Dean Harries; Flyn Tjoonk: Kieran Hurley; Dafydd Rotie; Marcus Castle (Capt). Replacements:  Sior Phillips; Andrew Jones; Iwan Toft; Sam Lloyd.

The winning St Davids team

Division Four (West):

Saints too strong for struggling Llan

St Davids 60 - Llanybydder 5

It's two league wins from two for St Davids this season after the hosts ran in 10 tries against a valiant Llanybydder side. However, the game again raised queries about the capability of the visitors to continue in the division, after the hosts permitted four players to the opposition just so they could fulfil the fixture.

To Bydder's credit, they battled hard against the elements early on, and struck first when standout No.8 Aled Davies - one of the quartet loaned to them by the Saints - rounded off a series of forward drives by powering over.

No.10 Llion Williams missed the conversion and then, in a blow to the away side, left the field in a sling with a shoulder injury. The Saints soon struck back as scrum half Tom Goodson pounced on a loose ball to score in the corner and after Bob Froy converted, home centre Harvey Lavin threw a dummy out wide and then sped in from 30 yards for a five-pointer.

The third St Davids try came in chaotic circumstances, as centre Adam Phillips had a clearance kick closed down, but Lavin managed to hack the swirling ball on twice before gathering it again and diving over for a try with Froy again adding the extras.

Winger Luke Bamford scored out wide to seal the bonus point, and there was still time for another St Davids try before the interval as Phillips won turnover ball on his own line and instigated a length of the field move that culminated in full back Fred Dorm crossing for a score Froy converted to make it 31-5.

Hosts hammer home advantage

To Bydder's credit, they refused to die in the second half and flanker Harry Wilson carried manfully before being forced off with injury, but then running out of steam was inevitable. Saints' replacement back Danny Voyce went over before George Raymond and hooker Tom Clarke - who both carried powerfully throughout - combined to put flanker Aaron Foster over.

Raymond then picked up from a scrum and went a full 50 yards to score and winger Luke Bamford and Dorm added further tries, with Froy converting twice to round off the scoring. Llanybydder walked off with credit for fulfilling the fixture, but also with question marks with remaining over whether fulfilling games this season is sustainable.

Lyons lauds Llanybydder effort

"We had a slow start and they went pick and go to get their try which was maybe the shot we needed to get us going," said St Davids' assistant coach Noel Lyons. "But we had the wind in the first half, and then tried to run everything effectively against it.
"It was nice in the end to get some tries and put a team away. A lot of teams wouldn't have travelled like they did they today, having to borrow players, but we're grateful they did."

St Davids: Fred Dorn: Luke Bamford; Harvey Lavin; Adam Phillips; Bob Froy: Ben Joyce; Tom Goodson: Adam Williams; Tom Clarke; Ben Lloyd: Iestyn Owen; Cameron Sapsford: Aaron Foster; Daf Williams; George Raymond (Capt). Replacements: Ethan Griffiths; Dan Murphy;  Charlie Lavin; Osian Sutton; Danny Voyce; Nathan Foster.

Quins Old Boys having a reunion at this match

Quins over-powered by Ponty

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 7 - Pontyberem 25

Jack Price - scored the only try for The QuinsClassy centre Jack Price claimed his sixth try of the season for Pembroke Dock Harlequins, converted by skipper Ben Hathaway, but by then The Quins were already 17 points adrift at Bierspool against an experienced Pontyberem side that now sits atop the section table with 14 points from three victories to start the season well.

Ponty used power aplenty up front to lead 10-0 at the break through a penalty by Rhodri Harries, who also landed the conversion of a well-worked try by centre Cory Hardy., despite the hard work of Jack Davies, Mark Van Rhyn alongside Iestyn and George Evans, playing on permit from Neyland.

At the start of the second half The Quins conceded a penalty try before Price struck but although Craig Barnett, Morgan Rogers and Hathaway tried to raise the temp it was Pontyberem who rounded off the scoring second Lewis penalty before powerful second row Sam Morgan earned them a bonus point with their fourth try.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins:  Ben Hathaway (Capt): Tom Donovan; Jack Price; Jake Griffiths; Craig Barnett: Morgan Rogers; Sam James: Jack Davies; Jack Hagan; Alfie Ball: Mark Van Rhyn; Liam Baker: Owain Evans; Danny Wilkes; George Evans. Replacements: Dan McLeod,  Andrew Edwards; Iestyn Evans; Jack Mallitte; Josh Brown; Rhys Thomas.

The Bulls ease home in tight tussle

Teirw Crymych 21 - Llangwm 12

Morgan Rees (try scorer for Llangwm, doing well in a previous match)Teirw Crymych finally got their league season off to a late start as they entertained Llangwm and soon settled into their running rugby as they led 12-5 at half time, held off a battling Wasps’ team as they fought back level, and finished the stronger to also pouch a welcome bonus point.

Tomos Davies and Tom Tagg scored first-half Crymych tries, one converted by Davies, as  No 8 Morgan Rees responded for the visitors with a clean pick-up  and drive over the line from close range.

Llangwm hauled themselves level as centre Owain Jones crossed the white-wash as reward for his hard work in the centre alongside Josh Griffiths, and  No 10 George James added the extras.

Morgan played well in conjunction with the likes of  forwards Jason Mock, Jordan Evans and Joe Newton – but in the final analysis the Bulls added further tries by prop Lloyd Hughes and scrum half Owain Rees, one again converted by Thomas Davies, to start Teirw Crymych off to a very positive start.

Teirw Crymych: Tomos Rees: Gruff Williams; Hedd James; Osian Thomas; Gwion Evans: Tomos Davies; Owain Rees: Rob Davies;  Tomos Davies; Lloyd Hughes: Tomos Tagg; Steffan Morris: Dylan Harries; Griff Lloyd (Capt);Carwyn Lawrence. Replacements: Iwan Laugharne; Rhys Richards; Carwyn Phillips.

Tenby Athletic 5 - Dreigiau Emlyn 25

Luke Hartland - scored the only try for Tenby AthleticAfter two wins on the trot, Tenby United Athletic suffered their first league loss as they found their rivals Dreigiau Emlyn a little too hot to handle on the day and in the final analysis could have few grumbles about the final margins.
