All Blacks run in seven tries in entertaining tussle

Neyland 45 - Cardigan 22

The large crowd who turned up at The Athletic Ground were treated to an 11-try bonanza  as Neyland scored seven of them and visitors Cardigan earned their bonus point for the other four as both teams ran the ball at every opportunity and showed total commitment in the ball-winning stakes.

There was a minute’s silence before the start in memory of Mrs Jackie Williams, the mother of former All Blacks ‘greats’ Andrew and Matthew Williams, with her grandchildren continuing the family involvement as George skippered the team and scored two cracking tries – and with his brother Ben also crossing the whitewash in the second half.

It was George who opened the scoring with a cracker of the try after Josh Watts and Owen Hamer had featured and Owain Evans supported as always to supply the final pass – and Rio Phillips converted before Oli Rothero grabbed  the second try after George Williams’ clever little chip to the corner bounced perfectly for the full back to dive over the line.

Neyland added a third try almost immediately after centre Patrick Bellerby pounced on a loose ball, kicked ahead twice and picked up to slip a pass to lurking winger Josh Watts, who posed a threat all afternoon – and they ensured a bonus point with a fourth try, scored again by skipper Williams, also converted by Rio Phillips, who guided the home attacks with assurance beyond his years.

It says much for The Cardis’ durability as they opened their account right on half time as prop Andrew Jones powered over but Neyland were good value for their 24-5 lead.

Neyland also started the second period well as Rothero claimed a deserved second score and Ben Williams joined him on the scoresheet but Cardigan made The All Blacks pay for a spell where they lacked concentration by scoring tries from forwards Kieran Hurley and Kester Adams in the left corner before Patric Bellerby’s hard work alongside Liam Rees saw him score near the posts and Phillips converted.

But it was perhaps appropriate that Cardigan  should round off the scoring with that vital fourth try in front of their hardy band of supporters, who included their legendary ‘Dad’s Army’ quartet, in a game that was a credit to both clubs!

Crymych go close to shock victory

Crymych 40 - Tondu 48

Crymych were desperately unlucky to end this high-scoring battle with league leaders Tondu having pouched a solitary bonus point for scoring at least four tries but finished without any other rewards because the final whistle saw them miss out on a second point because they were tantalising just short – and could even have picked up a first win of the season as they led 40-38 late on but conceded a dropped goal and converted try!

The Preseli Men were only 24-21 behind at the break as they ran in tries from outstanding back rower Iestyn Wood, hooker Lee Griffiths and No 8 Tom Taylor, all three converted by  centre Ifan Davies. whose opposite number Jamie Murphy did the same by converting tries by second row Ciaran Davies, No 8 Ben Davies and centre Scott Callicott, as well as landing a penalty from the final kick of the first half.

Fortunes ebbed and flowed again after the interval as the visitors added further tries from both Davies boys, Morgan Hughes and Murphy, who dropped that vital goal and converted two of them.

For Crymych, there was a second score for Wood alongside others by winger Frazer James and centre Ifan Phillips from a clever little chip, catch and run to the line. Ifan Davies added two more conversions but Tondu left Parc Lloyd Thomas very relieved to have pouched five points to stay on top – with the Preseli Men at least showing they have the ability to compete at this level!

Crymych: Eilir George: Jac Griffiths; Ifan Davies; Ifan Phillips; Frazer James: Deiniol Mathias; Dafydd Phillips (Capt): Osian Charles; Lee Griffiths; Ben Cox: Dion Gibby; Matthew Freebury: Iestyn Wood; Llyr Davies; Tom Taylor. Dom drives Seasiders to victory

Tenby United 36 - Swansea Uplands 27

Dom Booth - playing his first game of the season for Tenby - and try scorer Max BrindleyDom Colman - two tries for powerful Tenby United No 8Two tries by powerhouse No 8 Dom Colman helped Tenby United gain a deserved victory over a battling Trimsaran side – and in doing so saw them move into third place in the table at this early stage in the season, with visitors to Heywood Lane not even having a bonus point after staying in contention for much of the game.

As well as Colman’s try brace others came from  flanker Max Brindley, winger Gwion Jones, scrum half Dai Jones, and hooker Kyle Rossiters, with three of them converted by Bowyn Clark as the talented young No 10 grows in confidence with each game.

Winger Tom Edmonds scored the pick of The Uplands’ tries and Paul Anson played well as kicking plenty of points. They also had outside half Joe Davies and outside centre Rhodri Williams back with the club and making an impact after playing at a higher level – but in the final analysis The Seasiders held the edge in finishing power, although coach Jonathan Evans was quick to say this opposition was good as any he had seen so far in this tough division!

‘Cocklemen’ hold on to edge out Borderers

Penclawdd 20 - Whitland 12

Ceiron Evans - good try for Whitland skipperThis was another defeat for Whitland, despite the Borderers showing plenty of fight in their game at Penclawdd.

Trailing 13-5 at the break, and with coach Gareth Davies forced to pick himself due to unavailability, the visitors crossed again in the second half but were unable to take full advantage of home indiscipline as The Donks finished with 14 men.

The hosts were in control at half-time as prop Alex Crawford and scrum half Scott Ace both crossed, with centre Scott McCann adding a penalty. Whitland, who had Tom Hughes sin binned early on for a dangerous tackle,  kept in touch though as winger Rhys Davies went over in the corner.

Penclawdd had two yellow cards of their own early in the second period, with second row Jack Jones and No.8 Owen Jones both given 10 minutes - with the latter later red carded after returning the field and being guilty of a deliberate knock on.

However, Ace went over for another try which he converted himself, and although Ceiron Evans crossed for Whitland and Shane Rossiter added the extras, the eight point deficit left them frustratingly short of a bonus point.

Whitland: Shane Rossiter:  Rhys Davies; Lucas Dance; Rhys Nicholas; Tom Day:  Gareth Davies;  Luke Watkins: Charlie Watson; Shane Clarke; Ceiron Evans (Capt): Tom Hughes; Ross MacLean Anderson: Ali Goodman; Gavin Smith; Thomas Iraia. Davies drives Mariners to deserved home win

Milford Haven 40 - Amman United 31

Ieuan Davies - try double for The Mariners flankerMilford Haven were good value for their second victory in three matches, beating gritty opponents in Amman United, who started the day in bottom place with three consecutive defeats but at least had the consolation of their first bonus point for scoring four tries.

The Mariners started well and took a 12-0 lead through tries by flanker Ieuan Davies from inside the 22, and then a cracking finish by outside half Efan Morgan, one of them converted by  scrum half James Truman, switched to play there instead of his normal wing berth, and playing well alongside the likes of James Williams, Robbie Jones and skipper Dan Jenkins.

But Amman served notice of intents as they bounced back before the break with two tries by winger Dean Matthews and prop Dan Lloyd, both converted by scrum half Lee Evans to give the visitors a 14-12 interval lead.

Scott Danter added two second-half tries to secure that bonus point, with Evans again converting both and adding a penalty.

But The Mariners really upped their game to score 28 points thanks to tries by second row Jon Fawcett, Ieuan Davies (his second as reward for an all-action game with Jordan Palmer and Scott Buirds, who also got in on the try count, alongside assistant coach Jonathan Thomas) – and all four converted by Trueman to round off a good team performance under new coach Zac France-Miller!

Milford Haven: James Williams: Cian Harries;  Dan Jenkins (Capt); Robbie Jones; Jonathan Thomas: Efan Morgan; James Trueman: Ben Jenkins; Luke Ryan; Aaron Mayne: Jon Fawcett; Zac Davies: Jordan Palmer; Ieuan Davies; Scott Buirds. Replacements: Josh Palmer; Ryan Williams; Ethan Aldred; Brandom Cooer; Aaron Davies; Jordan Davies.

Athletic edged out in dramatic finish

Narberth Athletic 31 - Trimsaran 34

Narberth Athletic came agonisingly close to a first win in this tough division after gaining promotion last campaign at their first attempt but in the final analysis had to settle for the consolation of two bun us points for scoring four tries and coming with seven points of their opponents.

As the lead changed a few times in an entertaining first half the Otters Seconds lead 21-14 thanks to tries by second row Kieran Allen, full back Ior Lewis and centre Stephen Brown, all three converted by outside half Brad Cramb.

But Trimsaran kept in contention through two tries by strong-running centre Lee Bates, both converted by his co-centre Corey Phillips.

Narberth prop Jac Norcross secured that bonus point for their fourth try as reward for all his hard graft alongside Rhys Jenkins and skipper Stephen Pilot but Trimsaran a try double by Emyr Evans, both converted by Corey Phillips, who also landed that vital penalty which gave his team a welcome second win from four starts!

Narberth Athletic: Iori Lewis: Iestyn Doble; Stephen J Brown; Will Davies; Ashton O’Riordan: Brad Cramb; Andrew Williams: Declan Cole; Rhys Jenkins; Jac Norcross: Henry Foster: Kieran Allen: Sam Davies, Wil Nicholas, Stephen Pilot (Captain). Bonus point win for The Quins at Bierspool

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 46  - Teirw Crymych 24

Sam James - two tries for Quins wingerA bonus-point win at Bierspool was fitting reward for the Pembroke Dock Harlequins as they ran in seven tries against a battling Teirw Crymych, who just missed out on a bonus point themselves as a late surge by scrum half Owain Rees fell just short.

The Quins were already 20-10 ahead at the break after skipper Ben Hathaway had landed a penalty and then converted his own try before Tomos Davies slotted a penalty – and the Preseli Men grabbed their first try just on half time, converted by Thomas Davies, after winger Sam James and livewire flanker Callum Jones crossed for the Quins, the latter forming a lively back row with Danny Wilkes and Harry Owen.

The home side also started the second half well as winger Gethin Bradney won the chase for a kick ahead and then classy outside half Craig Barnett, who worked well with Adam Cawley,  scored an opportunist try, both converted by Hathaway.

Busy prop Owen Fletched grabbed a try for The Bulls, converted by Tomos Davies, before Jack Davies, Jack Hagan and Dan McLeod won good ball for The Quins which allowed them to set up a second try for winger James – and after Steffan Rees had claimed a third converted try for Crymych, The Quins deservedly had the final word when powerful centre Jake Griffiths scored the final try for The Quins, converted by Hathaway, to give them a comfortable win as reward for a solid all-round team display.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins: Ben Hathaway (Capt): Gethin Bradney; Josh Brown; Jake Griffiths; Sam James:  Craig Barnett; Adam Cawley: Jack Davies; Jack Hagan; Dan McCleod: Mark Van Rhyn; Liam Baker: Callum Jones; Dannie Wilkes; Harry Owen. All square at Ddol Wiber

Dreigiau Emlyn 25 - St Davids 25

George Raymond - St Davids skipper scored two triesA late try from No.8 George Raymond salvaged a draw for St Davids in what turned out to be a thrilling conclusion to their game at Newcastle Emlyn.

Trailing 25-20 late on, Raymond picked up from a five metre scrum and forced his way over, with winger Bob Froy then missing the chance to win it as his difficult conversion attempt drifted wide. Even then there was still time for drama, with home No.10 Llyr Tobias missing a 40 metre penalty kick in the final action of the game.

The pattern of the match was established early, with the Saints dominant in the scrum and with their pack on the front foot, but Emlyn were dangerous in the manner in which they counter-attacked out wide.

Sure enough, the home side took the lead when one flowing move saw winger Gethin Davies cut over, with Llyr Tobias adding the extras. St Davids struck back though as No.10 Ben Joyce crossed and Froy converted, and the frantic opening continued as full back Celt Davies then touched down for Emlyn.

Tobias and Froy exchanged penalties before the home side took a command, scrum half Llyr James going over for a seven pointer to make it 22-10. The first half scoring still wasn't done though, Raymond powering through for his first try for Froy to convert - before a Tobias penalty left the score at 25-17 following a breathless 40 minutes.

Inevitably, the second half didn't match the free scoring nature of the first, with the St Davids front row of Ethan Griffiths, Tom Clarke, and Dan Murphy still causing the Emlyn pack problems at scrum time. However, despite a series of attacking platforms the Saints only had a Froy penalty to show for their efforts as time looked to be running out.

However, then came Raymond's intervention and the late chaos, leaving both sides with mixed feelings at drawing a game they feel they could have won.

St Davids: Fred Dorn: Luke Bamford; Harvey Lavin; Andrew Phillips; Bob Froy:  Ben Joyce; Tom Goodson: Ethan Griffiths; Tom Clarke; Dan Murphy: Ben Lloyd; Iestyn Owen: Daf Williams; Nathan Foster; George Raymond/ Replacements:  Adam Williams;  Aled Davies; Owain Morris; Aaron Foster; Sac Morgan

Pontyberem 64 - Tenby United Athletic 12

Jack Gooding - scored a try for Tenby AthleticAfter a solid start to their league debut season, Tenby United Athletic are finding it hard going against some strong first teams like Pontyberem, whose powerful pack controlled matters and their backs put that excellent possession to good use.

To be fair to the Seasiders Seconds, they never gave up trying and had tries by teenage hooker Iwan Duffy and experienced centre Jack Gooding, who also landed a conversion.
