Pembrokeshire Youth Rugby Round-Up - 14th September 2024

Young Wasps edge out Pembroke in thriller

Pembroke 24 - Llangwm 29

Referee: Kenny Davies

Venue: Crickmarren

Pembroke and Llangwm produced a frenetic end to end 70 minutes of rugby enjoyed by a big crowd at Crickmarren on a floodlit Friday evening. Pembroke showed real grit to fight back from an early deficit and take the lead before Llangwm regrouped to take the spoils late on, writes Jonathan Willington.

Llangwm made a fast start with winger Kieran Lewis darting over for an excellent team try following multiple phases with Oscar Willington converting. Llangwm looked dominant but Pembroke found their feet, held them at bay and on 20 minutes after a period of pressure flanker Callum Edwards ploughed over with Zak Shaw converting to tie the score at 7-all.

Back came Llangwm to grab two further tries to take a 7 – 17 lead into the half-time break. With their forwards carrying strongly, Lewis grabbed his second alongside a try for William Harries playing on the opposite wing. The writing looked on the wall for Pembroke as early in the second half Llangwm extended their lead to 7 – 22 as prop Kieran Sinclair crossed the line as reward for a tireless performance.

Llangwm though committed the cardinal sin of sitting back on a 15-point lead, losing their shape and intensity and Pembroke capitalised in full. They dominated a 20- minute period that saw the impressive Shaw grab two tries to go with one from flanker Iolo Williams, Lewis Jones converting one to take Pembroke into a 24 – 22 lead. Pembroke had gained the ascendancy with Lewis Dennison and Theo Slaney carrying well and Ethan John posing a real threat at full back.

Llangwm though were not to be denied. They regrouped and began to threaten the Pembroke line. Willington looked to orchestrate things with Liam Miller and Joe Johns making line breaks to gain good field position. With the likes of Dean Thorpe and Seth Hughes punching holes in the defence, it was flanker Morgan Doncaster who proved the hero for Llangwm as he dived over wide out for a try with Willington converting to seal victory.

Blues beat The Seasiders in a cracking contest

Haverfordwest 20 - Tenby United 17

There was action-aplenty in the match between Haverfordwest and Tenby United that was thoroughly enjoyed by an appreciative audience at Merlins Bridge.

Both teams had started the season, winning their opening games so something had to give before The Young Blues made home advantage count to win ny three points.

Harri Evans, Devin Williams and Isaac Mills were Haverfordwest try scorers, with a conversion and vital penalty from Rio Phillips.

For the Younge Seasiders there were tries by Alfer Pryor and Keanu Williams alongside one by Iwan Duffy, who also landed a conversion in a tight tussle.

Crymych show their class with five-try victory

Crymych 30 - Fishguard & Goodwick 7

Crymych are this season’s front runners as their clear-cut win over a Fishguard & Goodwick side that had enjoyed a big win the previous week, running in five tries to the one for The Young Seasiders by Adam Wilkes, converted by Will Robinson.

Ifan James, Gareth Thomas, Elliott Bailey Williams, George Nelson and Delme Alleyne crossed the whitewash for Crymych alongside a conversion and penalty by the influential Dafydd Bryan.

It means that Crymych sit in top spot, not only winning both, but taking maximum points in the process.

Young Otters bounce back well

Aberystwyth 24 - Narberth 27

Narberth Youth made the long journey to Aberystwyth after losing their opening match the previous week and must have pleased coach Jason Jennings at the way they fought hard against a strong home side which had their chances but a mixture of excellent defence and total commitment saw The Young Otters win through.

It was Aber’s first game of their campaign and they had two bonus points for scoring four tries (by Dewi Gwynne (2), Cerith Williams and Sean Spollen, plus a conversion apiece by Tomos Jones and Steffan Gwyn Jones) and a second bonus point for being close to their opponents’ score.

Narberth pouched the maximum five points awarded, for victory as well as scoring four tries, by Callum White, Dan Coaker, and Theo Tilley (2), with two conversions and a vital penalty from Ashton O’Riorden.
