Pembrokeshire Youth Rugby - Week One
There were three matches played as the local teams playing youth rugby got under way and Fishguard played well on The Moors as they easily accounted for Pembroke, Crymych won a hard-fought tussle against Llangwm at Pill Parks and Tenby United comfortably beat Narberth at the Lewis Lloyd Ground.
You will be able to find the results and scorers of youth matches later in each weekend and with help from parents and coaches we plan to widen our coverage with more detail and photographs, which can be sent on Whats App to 07807 054743.
Crymych start superbly and fend off a strong Llangwm comeback
Llangwm 19 - Crymych 22
Crymych showed why they are likely to be a power in this season’s league as their pack dominated the first quarter and their backs showed real pace as Ifan Williams orchestrated matters until he sadly had to retire with a shoulder injury soon afterwards.
By then they had motored into a 17-0 lead with tries from George Nelson, Ifan Wyn Jones and Dafydd Bryan, one converted by Isaac davies – but Llangwm gradually regrouped and just before half time they reduced the deficit as centre Oscar Willington ploughed over at the posts and added the conversion.
The Young Wasps further reduced the arrears when powerful second row Dean Thorpe rounded off a concerted forward drive but The Preseli Boys responded when Josh Thomas crossed the whitewash before Llangwm had the final word when hooker Seth Hughes rounded off another forward surge and Willington added the extra points to earn his team a deserved bonus point in a cracking game between two very committed squads.
Ten-try Seagulls too strong for Scarlets
Fishguard & Goodwick 60 - Pembroke 7
Pembroke dominated last season’s youth league rugby but have lost a number of key players now moving into senior rugby but their young and relatively inexperienced team battled hard against a strong Fishguard team in which centres Dom Sinnett and Ryan Burton excelled, the former running in four tries and the latter adding a deserved brace.
Others were scored by Jesse James (2), Dafydd James and Will Robinson as Ifan Evans and Taine Williams also worked well – with full back Thomas Griffiths scoring The Scarlets’ try, converted by centre Zac Shaw, and with prop Rio Stanford and second row Lewis Dennison voted their joint men of the match.
Seasiders start off with a solid away win
Narberth 7 - Tenby United 27
Tenby started their new season off with a comfortable win against The Young Otters, for whom replacement Owen Woof grabbed a second-half try, converted by Ashton O’Riorden.
Woof was duly chosen as the Narberth man of the match for his impact play but it was Tenby who triumphed as they scored good tries by Iwan Duffy, Owen Grieve and Rhys Parker, two of them converted by Alfie Prior.
Prior also slotted two penalties for a personal haul of 12 points and in the final analysis The Young Seasiders were good value for victory, despite some solid performances by the opposing Narberth squad.
