Nick hopes for a return to The Lewis Lloyd Ground

If Narberth RFC do manage to stay in the WRU Premiership Division for next season then one team likely to oppose them will be Llanelli Wanderers, who are hot favourites to top the Championship Division (West) as they need a maximum of only 12 points from their last four matches.

And such a scenario would mean a return to The Lewis Lloyd Ground after a two-year absence, including Sean Gale and his son Nick, who are now respectively head coach and backs’ coach/player of their home-town team of Llanelli Wanderers, whilst other former Otters would be Steff Phillips as forwards’ coach/player alongside players Jake Baker, Rhodri Jones and Lawrence Reynolds

Sean was involved as player and coach for 18 years at Narberth and helped them develop from a very good team in the lower divisions to their place in The Premiership – with Nick involved as a free-scoring full-back, winger or centre who played for ten years and in playing 160 games amassed a huge tally of exactly  1,100 points, a record that is very unlikely to ever be beaten.

In the two seasons since they returned to The Wanderers at their home in Stradey Park they have done really well and Nick has continued to pile up the points as  he helped them to win the double of Division One (West)  Champions and WRU National Divisions Cup holders last season to gain promotion to the WRU Championship (West) where they have already won The Championship Divisions Cup by beating Tondu in an epic final in Cardiff.

The Wanderers actually trailed 32-7 in the second half but came back to edge home 35-32 from the last move of the match – and it had been a similar story in the semi-final against Beddau, where they were 25-6 adrift but managed to win 30-28.

Nick receives his District G award from Aled WilliamsThey had already beaten Kenfig Hill (72-17), Aberdare (52-10) and Tata Steel, their rivals for this season’s league honours, but they won 29-18 after previous league victories over The Steelmen by 39-29 (away) and 32-10 (home) earlier in the campaign. It maintained their proud unbeaten home record over the two seasons as they lost only two games this year, to Tondu (21-20) and Trebanos (25-17).

Nick, who was a great favourite with The Otters’ supporters, is quick to play down his key role in The Wanderers’ success, but a little research reveals they last season saw him voted at WRU District G ‘Player of the Year’ – and this year he has already amassed 350 points with four games still to play, comprising 10 tries; 64 conversions and 51 penalties, scoring all of the points when The Wanderers beat Kenfig Hill 31-19.

When Nick Gale joined Narberth RFC on the 23rd August 2013, PembrokeshireSport.co.uk placed on our site a `Good Wishes’ message where we said we hoped he would enjoy his time at The Lewis Lloyd Ground.

Well, we can safely say that he certainly did that and we are delighted to see him still piling up the points for Llanelli Wanderers - and we would love to see him appearing against Narberth next campaign, especially since it would mean The Otters are back there as the flag bearers for Pembrokeshire Rugby!

A delighted Llanelli Wanderers team
