The visitors were reduced to ten-men as goalkeeper Steven Hartley was sent off and Michael Cooper went between the sticks. At the bottom end of the table St Ishmaels won 4-2 at rock bottom Hundleton. This was a game that Hundleton would have targeted to win, but it did not work out as they suffered a 16th defeat of the campaign. West Wales Intermedaite Cup – Round Four

Bridge bow out against Neath Giants

Merlins Bridge 1 – Giant's Grave 4

Simon Thomas battled for possessionMerlins Bridge bowed out of the West Wales Cup as they failed to capitalise on a good first half performance and allowed Giant's Grave to score three unanswered goals in the second period.

Giant's Grave hail from the Briton Ferry area and are showed why they are contenders for the Neath Premier League title as they fielded a very experienced side which included coach Ian Morgan at the heart of their defence, with others of the calibre of Richard Barness, Dai Ball, and especially Keith Phillips with the ability to hold the ball up well and make it do the work.

To be fair to the Wizards, they never stopped running as Dai Davies and Nathan Thomas tried to win the midfield battle but couldn't build enough periods of pressure, especially with the wind in their favour.

Skilful play pays off

The visitors served notice of their skilful play, even on a very heavy pitch, as Phillips flicked a shot just wide early on and Chris Hopkins rapped the woodwork with a left foot volley, whilst Steve McNabney fired into the side netting from the Wizards' first attack.

But Merlins Bridge conceded a sloppy goal after 27 minutes when they failed to clear a ball lofted into their area and Hopkins scored, via the near post.

Giant's Grave continued to have marginally the better of the play but the Bridge drew level in the vital period before half time when they managed to sustain pressure in the box and it fell to McNabney for the striker to rifle his shot through a forest of legs and past Chris Pendleton in the Giant's Grave goal.

Giant's Grave grab two goals in a minute

At this stage the Bridge could consider themselves slight favourites with the wind at their backs and the conditions getting heavier – but they conceded soft goals in the 53rd and 54th minutes to trail 3-1. Firstly they failed to clear and the ball fell to Sam Baker, who curved the ball past the despairing arms of Gary Thomas and into the far top corner of the net. Then another defensive lapse allowed Hopkins to break clear and after rounding Thomas his shot rolled agonisingly over the line.

...Stephen McNabney is congratulated for equalising by Bridge colleagues. The Bridge tried unsuccessfully to claw their way back into contention but the final nail in their coffin came when man of the match Keith Phillips picked up the ball some 25 yards out and rifled a diagonal shot which flew into the far corner – a superb goal to grace any game.

There was no way back for the Bridge after that and although they kept running at the Giant's Grave defence it was the visitors who moved through and left Merlins Bridge to reflect on what might have been.

Merlins Bridge: Gary Thomas, Gethin Roberts, Simon Gilderdale, Paul Thomas, Simon Thomas, Brett Shakir, Peter Thomas, Nathan Thomas, Dai Davies, Ben Skudder, Stephen McNabney. Substitutes: Lee Hudgell; Gareth Williams; Jac Pepper.
Giant's Grave: Chris Pendleton: Mel Arthur; Richard Barness; Chris Mahoney; Ian Morgan; Ross Davies; Dai Ball; Sam Baker; Chris Hopkins; Keith Phillips; Dan Evans. Substitutes: Dan Williams; Jamie Jones; Gavin Williams.

Hakin United's Ashley Bevan takes on Monkton Swifts' Daniel Scourfield. Vikings thrash Swifts as Sports and Solva both win at home

Hakin United go nine points clear at the top of the Manderwood Pembrokeshire Football League First Division after thrashing Monkton Swifts 12-1 at home.
This victory certainly sends out a loud and clear message of the Vikings' title intentions. Only a few weeks ago the Swifts were second in the table, but this was their third defeat in a row as they slipped down to sixth spot.
James Stanmore had a magnificent game for the Vikings and finished with five goals as his reward. Justin 'Skinny' Harding grabbed a hat-trick and Ashley Bevan, Steve Mathias and Scott Davies all added their names to the Vikings' impressive score sheet. The Swifts grabbed a late consolation goal from Carl Rees, on a day that they quickly want to forget.

Saundersfoot Sports took the opportunity to move up to second in the table after easily overcoming Neyland 5-1 at home. Geoff Marsh (2), Jake Marsh, Richard Cope and Chris Milward grabbed the goals for the silky-looking Sports. Andrew Kemp grabbed a goal in the second half for the beaten Nomads, who had no complaints at the final whistle.

Solva moved off the bottom of the table thanks to Whitland rugby player Fraser Watson scoring twice against fellow strugglers Hundleton. Watson only played because of a pre-match injury to a Solva player and came on ten minutes after the start. Both his goals were scored in the first half as he showed his liking for the round-ball game and Harry Elliott grabbed the third to secure Solva's second win of the season that takes his side off the foot of the table and leaves Tenby in bottom spot.

Gareth Fawcett scored a superb solo goal for Tish, who were without the influential services of experienced players Adam Davies and Marc Devonald.

The draw for the semi-finals will take place in a few weeks' time where the names of Hakin United, West Dragons, Johnston and Pennar Robins will be placed in the hat.

Joel Morgan (2), Gareth Fawcett, Gareth Cheshire and Craig Harding found the back of the net for the visitors. Champions Merlins Bridge was held to a 1-1 draw at Goodwick United. Stephen McNabney scored for the Wizards but United grabbed a late equaliser through Rhys Dalling to secure a point. Bernie Armstrong received a warm welcome from the Goodwick faithful on his return as Bridge manager at Phoenix Park. West Wales Intermediate Cup Round Three:

Tigers too strong for brave Clarbie

Clarbeston Road 0 - Johnston 7

Johnston - seven goal winners at Clarbie Road Johnston were far too strong and streetwise for Clarbeston Road and came away with a seven-goal victory as reward for their dominance, despite the yeoman efforts of Dan Rees, Chris Darlington and Co in the Clarbie defence.

To be fair to Clarbie they never gave up trying and had several chances to get on the scoresheet but failed to find the target or forced good saves from Jim Payne in the Tigers' goal.

But the issue had been settled by half time as Johnston were 5-0 up and with James Skudder, Mark Jones, Luke Hayward and Liam Boswell doing well and with former Clarbie players Adam Hawkins and Joe John posing all sorts of problems up front.

Clarbeston Road - battled hard in vainChances soon come for Johnston –
and go for Clarbie!

John missed an early chance as Lee Scott saved well for Clarbie but the Tigers took the lead when Adam Hawkins created the chance and Boswell scored with the outside of his left boot.

Hawkins also set up Joe John with a good cross but the resultant header from John rapped the crossbar before Hawkins turned from creator to goal scorer as he punished a defensive error to fire home a low shot.

Joe John made it 3-0 as he scored with a well-placed left foot drive and when Boswell was pulled down in the box it was dominant central defender who fired in the spot-kick so that The Tigers were 4-0 ahead after only half an hour.

Greg Brown had a far-post header well-saved by Payne and Jason Griffiths volleyed just over the bar as Clarbie tried hard to reduce the deficit before Johnston went nap a good cross-field pass by Hawkins allowed Joe John to claim his second goal from the edge of the box.

Referee Kevin Bowen, who had a very good game in charge Tigers still on top in the second half

The second half saw Johnston still on top as Steve Mills and James Skudder featured on the ball before a goalmouth scramble allowed sweeper Chris Ormond to score a rare goal for the visitors, who made it 7-0 when sub Martyn Tweedie scored the goal of the game as he twisted and turned a defender outside the box and rifled a left-foot drive into the net.

Richard Bevan had a couple of chances at the other end but shot wide and then forced a superb tackle by Andrew John so Clarbie were unable to get on the scoresheet and Johnston marched easily into the next round!

Referee Kevin Bowen had a good game in charge and he worked well with club flag men Delwyn Lewis (Clarbeston Road) and Steve Mills Snr (Johnston).

Clarbeston Road: Lee Scott, Matthew Fox, Dan Rees, Rheinallt George, Chris Darlington, Greg Brown, Emyr Griffiths, Dan Lewis, Joules Ward, Richard Bevan, Jason Griffiths. Subs: Matthew Griffiths, Nick Bevan, Matthew Davies.
Johnston: Jim Payne, Andrew John, Kristian Griffiths, Chris Ormond, Steve Mills, James Skudder, Luke Hayward, Mark Jones, Liam Boswell, Adam Hawkins, Joe John. Subs: Scott Murray, Martyn Tweedie, Tom Richards.

Lawrenny cause big Senior Cup upset and Tigers score nine goals in West Wales Cup

Adam Hawkins scored in Johnston's 3-2 victory at Tenby. The heavy rain that caused pitches to waterlog affected a lot of the Manderwood Pembrokeshire Football League programme on Saturday.

There was only two First Division games scheduled and both of them were postponed.
But there some brilliant Senior Cup Round Two matches played and not everything went by the formbook.

Causing the biggest upset of the round was Lawrenny, of the third division, who gained the huge scalp of St Ishmaels, winning 1-0 at the First Division outfit's ground.
