Griffiths Cup Final:

Crymych 14 - Narberth 18

Referee:  Ceri Harries.
Assistants: Martyn Rudd & Dave Byrne.

Jenny and Gillian, representing the Griffiths familyNarberth’s talented young players retained The Griffiths Cup in a hard-fought tussle over long-standing rivals Crymych in a match that was described one knowledgeable Neyland onlooker, who has seen most of the games over the years, as one of the best in terms of high skill and fitness levels, total commitment and eagerness to play attacking rugby that was a credit to both sets of coaches.

The young Otters certainly settled better and they took a ten-point lead as they were able to spread play via half backs Elliott Evans and Charlie Phillips, plus centres Bradley Cramb and Shayne Norcross so that wingers Owen Llewelyn and James Price sped to the line.

Both teams had other chances but Narberth carried that ten-point advantage through to the interval – but then Crymych struck back via outstanding replacement Jake Noott, who is only 16 years of age and played with real maturity as open-side flanker, to score a try which No 10 Owain Davies converted.

The young Otters regained the initiative, however, with a try from prop Jack Davies, after good work by Harley Young, Owain Jones, Jamie Goldsworthy, Aaron Thompson and man of the match, second row Kyle Day.

Crymych refused to submit, though, and the narrowed the gap to a single point as dynamic winger Hedd George was put through by Deian Davies and Macs Page, with Owain Davies again adding the extras.

Narberth had the last word when full back Fraser Jones slotted a penalty and although Crymych battled hard for another score they were unable to break down a resolute Narberth defence and so it was the Young Otters who took the honours in a great game.

The trophy was presented by Gillian and Jenny, on behalf of their Griffiths’ family.
