Fishguard on the attack

Feature Match – Division Two (West):

Seagulls miss out in last 30 seconds

Fishguard & Goodwick 19 - Nantgaredig 20

Fishguard and Goodwick came within 30 seconds of victory against an equally strong Nantgaredig side in an absorbing clash at The Moors as they deservedly led 19-5 at half time but then Nant showed why they are one of the top sides in the section with a determined fight back.

But The Seagulls were still 19-15 ahead with four minutes to go but James Griffiths, who led the side in the absence of Chris Shousha after switching from centre to flanker for this match,  had had kicked well throughout, missed a penalty chance that would have meant Nant had to score twice.

And it was to prove vital because the away side stormed back upfield and with time running out they launched a penalty into the corner and from the resultant drive prop Dafydd Millward claimed the winning score.

Outside half Meirion Davies missed the conversion but it didn’t matter because referee Rhodri Morgans (Penygroes) blew for time – and the No 10 could lay strong claims for man of the match as he scored their first two tries, one from a classic break on the 22 and the second at the bottom of a forward drive where he emerged with the ball. He was one of three Davies’s who featured because No 9  Jacob was a potent attacker and veteran second row Carwyn took all their lineout ball.

Fishguard had shown solid defence early on and then scored a cracking try when their backs spread play left and Robbie Jones spotted a gap and Ed Bendall sped to the line for Griffiths to convert well.
Nant responded with a period of forward pressure that saw No 8 Gavin Orson drive over but Davies missed the conversion.

But The Seagulls’ pack featured heavily and after Adam Bowen had been held up short max Jones and Jake Jenkins swung play right and Robbie Jones crashed over near the corner – and then the home eight enjoyed a real success after a knock on near The Nant line gave the visitors a scrum five but they were rocked back over their own line for Cai Llewelyn to claim a try which Griffiths converted.

But Nant had the better of the second half, although The Seagulls defended superbly and had half chances of their own – but Meirion Davies featured for his two tries to set up that dramatic finale which saw his side snatch a victory that might have been so different.

Coaches Nathan and Steve Jenkins will have been gutted by this loss but, missed tackles apart; their team will play less well than this and still win if they can show the energy and commitment they showed in this disappointing late loss.

Fishguard & Goodwick: Kial Keane: Ed Bendall; Robbie Jones; Simon Rowlands; Cretan Foot: Jake Jenkins; Max Jones: Will Delaney; Liam Wilkes; Adam Bowen: Gwilym Evans; Richard Hunter: Cai Llewelyn; James Griffiths (Capt); Simon Colella. Otters outlast battling Beddau

Narberth 21 - Beddau 13

Nick Gale scores for The OttersNarberth gained their third win from five league starts as they fended off a strong challenge from a Beddau side which took an early lead and battled until the final whistle but found The Otters in no mood to surrender the lead once their pack had earned a penalty try.

Beddau used their big forwards to give place kicker Mitch Jones two early penalty chances which he accepted to put his team six points to the good but then The Otter responded with a strong surge from a lineout drive which was collapsed and the referee ran to the posts.

Lewys Gibby receives his man of the match award from Andrew YoungAnd the score stayed at 7-6 until the 39th minute when scrum half Lewys Gibby broke from half way and found winger  Josh Evans in support before taking the return pass and crossing in the corner for Nick Gale to add the extra points with a superb kick into the strong breeze.

The second half was no less competitive as The Otters utilised the elements in terms of pressure but Beddau defended well until Gale intercepted a pass on half way and sped to the posts for a try which he also converted.

But with nine minutes to go Beddau reduced the deficit after Dan Smith had been yellow-carded and they used this numerical advantage to score a try by Ollie Hughes which Mitch Jones converted.

But Narberth refused to allow any other scores and in the final analysis were good value for victory!

Preseli Men pounce for vital victory

Gowerton 23 - Crymych 25

Crymych man of the match - Trystan GriffithsGowerton had won all three previous matches but Crymych produced an excellent all-round display to maintain their second spot in the section table as they led 15-9 at half time and remained in front until the final whistle.

The Preseli Men had first-half tries by winger Tomos Lewis and full back Adam Phillips, who also converted one and added a penalty as they showed their willingness to run the ball via Hue Rees, Ifan Phillips, Gethin Gibby and Tomos Phillips – and all Gowerton could muster in response were three penalties, two from Bleddyn Jones and the other by Samson Lawson.

The home side pushed hard all the way to claim second half tries by hooker Aled Simons and flanker Dan Jones, both converted by Lawson but after defending well when needed they claimed further tries by Carwyn Rees and Adam Phillips to seal success as Trystan Griffiths was again outstanding up front, ably assisted by Dafydd Gibby and skipper Llyr Davies.

Crymych: Adam Phillips: Dafydd Phillips; Tomos Phillips; Gethin Gibby; Tomos Lewis: Ifan Phillips; Huw Rees: Dylan Phillips; Lee Griffiths; Ryan Rees: Rhys Davies; Matthew Freebury: Llyr Davies (Capt); Dafydd Gibby; Trystan Griffiths. Scarlets miss out in basement battle

Pembroke 12 - Penclawdd 29

With both teams without a win at the foot of the table there was added significance in Pembroke’s home match with Penclawdd but it was the ‘Cockle Men’ who made the journey home with a welcome win and leave The Scarlets still seeking a first league point from their four starts.

For Penclawdd, prop Liam Davey grabbed two tries and others came from flanker Dan Guineri and right winger Rhys Eaton to earn a bonus point, with Marcus Brown converting three and slotting a penalty.

Sadly, no details were available for Pembroke.

Borderers bag 35 points but lose heavily

Yr Hendy 64 - Whitland 35

There was running rugby aplenty as Yr Hendy beat Whitland by a hefty 29 points despite the fact that Whitland scored 35 points, with the 99 points scored in what appears to have been a thoroughly entertaining clash.

For the home side there were 10 tries and powerful No 8 Callum Williams claimed four of them alongside others by scrum half Ifan Beynon (2), hooker Dafydd Humphreys, full back Miles Harries, prop Shaun Williams and second row Jordan Daniels.

There were conversions shared by Tyler Payne (5) and Miles Harries (2) to round off the home scoring but we are unable to bring you The Borderers’ scorers in this instance.

Division Two (West):

Seasiders stumble after a great start

Kidwelly 27 - Tenby United 26

Tenby United conspired to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory at Kidwelly after they had played some splendid attacking rugby to build up a 21-point lead but then a mixture of indiscipline and taking of wrong options cost them dearly as they found themselves 27-21 down with two minutes to go.

Even then they had a golden chance to make amends when outstanding flanker Dan Colley scored his third try – but the conversion kick from in front of the posts was missed and they lost by a single point!

The only consolation for The Seasiders was the fact that they came away with two bonus points but it certainly looked as if they would claim a third victory in four starts as they scored 14 points in the opening ten minutes as Colley, looking a class act after switching to flanker from centre, opened their account from a well-controlled driving maul and then taking the scoring pass from Cam Broadhurst after a clever chip through by Toby Smith, both converted by No 10 Gwion Jones.

The Seasiders’ third try came when influential skipper Like Dedman, playing in his 250th game for the club, an amazing tribute to his fitness and loyalty, celebrated as he charged down a box kick on half way and gathered the ball to charge to the line so Jones could again add the extra points.

But in the last ten minutes of the period the warning signs were there for The Seasiders as Kidwelly grabbed unconverted tries by James Owen and Dafydd Phillips for a 10-21 interval deficit.

Tenby conceded further tries to Richard Pearce and Owen as they took wrong options, like a quick tap penalty instead of pinning the opposition back near their own line – and with two minutes to go Kidwelly took the lead for the first time when Pearce powered over again and Declan Smith converted.

But from the kick-off The Seasiders hit back when Colley, the best player on the field powered over, but the kick was agonisingly awry and a victory was denied – but there were minor plus points for the coaching staff, with Lloyd Thomas making a welcome return after injury, plus some yeoman work by the likes of Tom Barrass and skipper Dedman.

They have lost highly promising full back Max Brindley with a shoulder injury, however, and everyone at Heywood Lane will wish him a speedy return to action.

Tenby United: Lloyd Thomas: Jack Gooding; Cam Broadhurst; Toby Smith; Oakley Milton: Gwion Jones; Matthew Morgan: Ethan Morgan; Dan Allen; Rob Luly: Tom Barrass: Luke Dedman (Capt): Mike Davis; Will Swales; Dan Colley. Replacements: Dom Booth; Nicky Guymer; Frankie Boyd; Jimmy Davies; Adam Quill.

Mariners miss out at The Obs

Milford Haven 6 - Pontarddulais 29

Milford Haven battled hard against table-topping Pontarddulais and were only 6-10 adrift at half time but then the team from ‘The Bont’ showed what a good side they are by finishing with five tries and restricting The Mariners to just two penalties.

James Williams opened the score with a well-struck penalty and after prop Craig Davies scored the first try the full back added his second penalty on target.

But The Bont moved 10-6 in front by the interval and with Craig Davies adding his second score alongside others from flanker Ethan Miles, scrum half Jack Rees and replacement No 9 Ethan Dunne, plus one conversion by centre Llyr Grealy, the visitors still sit atop the table, whilst Milford Haven are 11th, still seeking anything to show some points after three losses.

Blues survive late Neyland fight-back

Neyland 26 - Haverfordwest 34

After three defeats on the trot Haverfordwest made the short journey to Neyland and finally celebrated a league victory after they established a 36-5 lead before The All Blacks staged a come-back to earn a bonus point for scoring four tries.

After there was some controversy in the lengthy first half the game finally played out with no fewer than nine tries and there was some good rugby played by both teams.

For The All Blacks there were tries from scrum half Owen Hamer, replacement Andrew Slark, plus wingers Stuart Phillips and Matthew Coles, with three conversions for outside half George Evans.

For The Blues their tries were scored by prop Jamie Zambas, centre Josh Thomas, skipper Matty Phillips, winger Lee Summons and replacement Steve Thomas, with three of them converted by full back Ollie Roberts to go with a penalty.

Saints shine to continue their run

St Davids 45 - Llangwm 15

Ben Joyce celebrates his try hat-trick for St DavidsSt Davids provided more positive proof of how much their talented young side has improved this campaign as their comfortable win over a gritty Llangwm side moved them into fifth place, surely their highest position since the National Leagues began.

Small wonder then that Jack Dudley, still serving the club on the coaching side, was jubilant afterwards as they scored seven tries to The Wasps’ three, with powerful centre Ben Joyce scoring three tries alongside others by prop Carwyn Lewis, second row Llion Williams, wingers Morgan Davies and Harvey Godkin, plus three conversions by No 10 Aaron Foster and two by full back Harry Owen.

The Saints were already 31-10 ahead at half time but The Wasps never gave up trying and claimed good tries by winger Ollie Gerson, centre Yale Grice and Tom Meehan, and were perhaps a little unlucky not to claim a bonus point for all their efforts.

St Davids: Ollie Owen: Morgan Davies; Ben Joyce; George Raymond; Harvey Godkin
Aaron Foster; Zac Morgan: Ben Evans; Andrew Williams; Carwyn Lewis: Llion Williams; Aled Davies: Rhys Price; Nathan Foster (Capt); Dafydd Williams. Replacements: Ryan John; Kieran Jones; Gavin Jenkins; Norman Price; Jack Rees; Tommy Reynolds.

Lampeter make it three maximums on the trot

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 10 - Lampeter 55

Gethin Bradney - two tries for The QuinsLampeter showed why they have claimed maximum league points from all three of their games so far to stand in joint top position after this clear-cut win at Bierspool where they led 29-5 at the interval against Pembroke Dock Harlequins and maintained that sort of momentum afterwards as they ran in nine tries, five converted by outside half Osian Jones.

The Quins’ tries both came from talented centre Gethin Bradney but leading the way for Lampeter was pacy left winger Meirion Lloyd, with four tries, and others by Brynmor Jones, Osian Jones (2), Idris Lloyd and Rhys Jones.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins: Morgan Owens: Tom Wheeler; Gethin Bradley; Ben Hathaway; Tom Donovan: Evan McDonald; Morgan Rogers:  Connor Kolmel; Jayden Webber; Dan McLeod: Sam James; Ben Gibby: Harry Owen; Danny Wilkes; Jack Brown (Capt). Replacements: Hywel Baker; Jake Mallitte; Liam Scourfield; Rhys Bradley; Kobie Thomas.

Aber make sure in second half

Aberaeron 36 - Cardigan 20

Tom Taylor - try for CardiganThere was action aplenty in this tough tussle on the coastline of Cardigan Bay as Aberaeron established a narrow 13-10 advantage at half time and then raised the tempo somewhat after the interval to secure success and a bonus point for scoring five tries.

Leading the way for Aber was flanker Bobby Jones, with a try hat-trick alongside a typical score from full back Morgan Llewelyn and a penalty try, plus four conversions and a penalty by influential outside half Rhodri Jenkins.

For The Teifisiders, there were tries by No 8 Tom Taylor and Llyr Jones, who also landed both conversions and two penalties, and they came close to snatching a bonus point on several occasions.
