Narberth man of the match Ilan Phillips with sponsor Jason Slater

Three tries in last five minutes set seal on Otters’ dominance

Ianto Griffiths - 150th game for The Otters with Supports Club chairman Peter JohnNarberth 43 - Tata Steel 0

Narberth gained their expected home win over bottom club Tata Steel, running in seven tries, despite the awful weather conditions that made their usual quality play difficult, with three of them coming in the final stages.

The Otters played against the elements in the first half but still led 19-0 as talented young centre Ilan Phillips claimed the two openers, the first from good pack play and quick hands in midfield, the second from a timely interception and unopposed dash to the line.

Scrum half Ben Thomas added the third as broke through from sustained pressure, with full back Nick Gale converting two and hitting the post with the other.

In the third quarter there was no scoring through a mixture of determined defence by Tata and worsening conditions but then Lewys Gibby came on as replacement No 9 and grabbed a try through sheer determination, and again Gale hit the woodwork with the conversion attempt.
And that was the way the score looked likely to stay until Gibby was again involved with five minutes to go as he took a quickly tapped penalty and found skipper Tom Powell in support to supply Ilan Phillips with his hat-trick score.

Gale missed the conversion in the by-now abject conditions but was soon back on the scoresheet with a try which he also converted and as Tata heads sunk low it was the ubiquitous Ilan Phillips who deservedly gabbed his fourth try and Gale added the extras.

Ilan Phillips also received the Man of the Match award from Supporters’ Club chairman Peter John. Whilst Ianto Griffiths’ feat of playing 150 games for Narberth RFC was also recognised post-match.

Preseli Men power to bonus-point away victory

Penclawdd 17 - Crymych 25

Osian Hill - back with a try for CrymychCrymych maintained their position at the top of the table with a hard-fought win at Penclawdd in very heavy conditions that suited the bigger home pack but after leading well at the break the visitors manged the worsening conditions as the game wore on and also picked up a welcome bonus point for scoring four tries.

The Preseli Men played some good rugby before the pitch conditions worsened and their first-half tries were claimed by Osian Hill, then a penalty try for collapsing a driving maul, and a third by Jon Hill to match his brother.

Adam Phillips landed a penalty to open The Preseli Men’s account and the full back sealed victory when he scored a late try to claim that vital victory because The Cocklemen are always hard to beat on their home territory.

The home scorers were flanker James Eaton (in the first half) followed by hooker Luke Snell and outside half Dan Guaneri, with centre Marcus Brown adding one conversion.

Crymych: Adam Phillips: Tomos Lewis; Tomos Phillips; Laurence Headlam; Osian Hill: Ifan Phillips; Daf Phillips: Jonathan Clout; Jon Hill; Lewis Davies: Matthew Freebury; Rhys Davies: Llyr Davies (Capt); Rhydian Howells; Dafydd Gibby. Sadly, there are no further details from this match.

Seagulls suffer in disappointing first-half performance

Kidwelly 37 - Fishguard & Goodwick 17

Robbie Jones - try for Fishguard full backKidwelly showed just why they are second in the section table with a powerful first half display, where they dominated and led 17-0 at half time, and although The Seagulls battled back after the oranges with three good tries they were never really in with a shout of a comeback win.

Jacob Malinowski was the Kidwelly man of the match as he grabbed three tries, along with others from James Owen and scrum half Declan Smith, who also kicked three conversions and two penalties in the difficult conditions.

For The Seagulls, there were tries by outside half Jake Jenkins, full back Robbie Jones and replacement Creegan Foot, with one conversion from James Griffiths.

Seasiders grab a losing bonus point for the fifth time in as many defeats

Tenby United 17 - Pontarddulais 24

Cam Broadhurst joined brother Jack on try sheetPontarddulais maintained their top of the table placing with a hard-fought victory over Tenby United at Heywood Lane but although The Seasiders will be disappointed to lose their fifth game they can take some consolation that, like in the other four losses, they picked up a bonus point for coming with seven points of the opposition.

The Bont place kicker Llyr Gealy landed an early penalty for a high tackle and added a second for a similar offence – but sandwiched in between was a first try claimed by Tenby in unusual circumstances after Lloyd Thomas’s penalty hit the upright and winger Gwion Jones grabbed a try as reward for his opportunism.

The Cocklemen led 13-5 at the interval as they scored their first try after 30 minutes by Lee Evans – and they increased their lead after 50 minutes when former Narberth No 9 Adrian Killa sniped over and although Gealy missed the conversion he added a penalty to put his side 21-5 ahead.

It says much for Tenby that they still refused to submit and Jack Broadhurst came off the bench to score a try from a charged down clearance attempt, converted by Thomas and with five minutes left his brother Cam, playing well at scrum half, crossed the whitewash to at least ensure his side had at least the consolation of the losing bonus point.

Tenby United: Matthew Morgan: Jordan Asparassa; Yannic Parker; Jack Gooding; Gwion Jones: Lloyd Thomas; cam Broadhurst: Ethan Morgan; Dan Allen; Rob Luly: Tom Barrass; Luke Dedman (Capt): Jake Roberts; Will Swales; Dan Colley. Replacements: Frankie Boyd; Jordan Evans; Jack Broadhurst; Max Brindley; Luke Hartland.

Division Three (West) A:

Patrick Bellerby - good try Neyland

All Blacks bag excellent away win against The Teifisiders

Cardigan 3 -  Neyland 20

Neyland’s win at Cardigan was a tribute to the efforts of coach Steve Evans, his staff and the players as their reward is a comfortable place in the top half of the table against a useful Teifisiders’ outfit where there are players of the calibre of Tom Taylor, Llyr Jones, John Lumb and Alun Jenkins, with skipper Jones claiming their only points with a first-half penalty as they trailed 3-7 because All Blacks in-form prop Luke Griffiths-Dawes had given them an 8th-minute lead.

It came from a period of sustained pressure before Owain Evans and Ben Williams took play to the blind side and Griffiths-Dawes was on hand to score a very good try which full back Ollie Rothero converted.

With the elements in the favour after a strong defensive earlier platform where Iestyn Evans, George Williams, George Evans and especially Adam Peel caught the eye, they added their second score when replacement Patrick Bellerby rounded off some crisp handling in the deteriorating conditions.

Jack Harries, who had worked tirelessly alongside Craig Power, Theo Davies and Mark James in the close exchanges, added the All Blacks’ third try and a Rothero penalty set the seal on a deserved success for Steve Evans’ squad.

Cardigan: John Lumb: Alun Jenkins; Jackson Tucker Lynch; Kieran Greenland; Tom Griffiths: Ben Rogers; Llyr Jones (Capt): Tomos Evans; Rhodri Parry Jones; Ben Hughes: Andrew Jones; Sion Phillips: Marcus Castle; Geraint Williams; Tom Taylor. Replacements: Luke Palmer-Davies; Kieran Hurley; Aaron Tomkinson; Rhodri Davies; Jack Taylor.

Neyland: Ollie Rothero: Henry McBeth; George Williams; Adam Peel; Matty Coles: George Evans; Owen Hamer: Luke Griffiths-Dawes; Jack Harries; Craig Power: Mark James; Theo Davies: Iestyn Evans; Owain Evans; Ben Williams. Replacements: Jasper Endean; Andrew Slark; Harrison Grice; Stu Phillips; Patrick Bellerby.

Llangwm defend well at Pill Parks

Wasps suffer in second half

Llangwm 6 - St Clears 64

Referee: Martin Rudd (Milford Haven)

St Clears made it nine wins in as many matches as they proved too strong in key areas and after leading 24-6 at the interval added a further 40 points in a one-sided second half against a Llangwm team which played its heart out in front of a very supportive crowd but understandably ran out of steam as The Saints added a further six tries to the four conceded before the oranges.

But The Wasps made a strong start when full back Luke Dyer kicked over an early penalty and then when St Clears fired their first warning shot with a smashing try by Jack Howells, converted by his co-centre Dan Griffiths, Dyer thumped an even longer attempt from fully 40 metres; no mean feat in the conditions.

When The Saints spurned a simple penalty chance their efforts were rewarded when a series of forward surges was ended when Tom Williams spotted a gap and Griffiths again added the extra points.

Llifon Davies added a third for St Clears before a sizeable outbreak of fisticuffs ended with Yale Grice being shown a red card – although several others from both camps were perhaps lucky not to join the Llangwm centre before The Saints finished the half off well when Tom Williams crossed for his second try.

With advantage of their second use of the elements against a rapidly tiring home defence, plus their numerical advantage, The Saints efforts saw Tom Williams round off a hat-trick and skipper Jac Howells sped over for his second; others from John Gosling, Tom Rees, Liam Rogers and Tom Mason, with Dan Griffiths landing five more conversions to round things off.

Llangwm: Luke Dyer: Ollie Gerson; Kieran Lewis Owen; Yale Grice; Jack Roberts: Matthew Evans; Ollie Kersey: Ieuan Power; Phil Llewellyn; Callum Jenkins: Steve Rees; David Reynolds: Owain Jones; Ian Griffiths; Jason Mock. Replacements: Gavin Jones; James Lewis; Dan Morgan; Bradley James; Louis Murphy; George John; Dan Ridge.

Action aplenty as St Clears go close

Haverfordwest on the attack at St Davids

Blues win but Saints take some of the plaudits

St Davids 11 - Haverfordwest 21

Referee: Joseph Kiff (Llangwm)

Haverfordwest eased home to victory at St Davids as they used the conditions well in the second half after The Saints had led 6-0 at half time thanks to two penalties by full back Adam Phillips.

Both sides had half chances but the rain and heavy conditions underfoot didn’t help – but with The Blues well on top in the set-pieces the warning signs were there for the home side.

And Haverfordwest introduced head coach Matthew John at half time and his calm control played a big part, especially when he cut through the middle and Ollie Roberts landed the simple conversion to give them a lead they weren’t to lose again.

When a Saints’ attempted move broke down they were made to pay a heavy price as Haverfordwest’s pacy winger Scott Candler raced clear to the line – and Roberts again did well to add the extra points.

The visitors made the game safe with a third try that was launched via their forward superiority and after several close thrusts were held up by determined Saints’ defence it was flanker Mikey Phillips who found a gap and Roberts converted again.

It says much for St Davids’ commitment, however, that they had the final word when they gained good possession for once and when play was switched wide it was full back Phillips who scored a try which he was unable to convert.

St Davids: Adam Phillips:  Rhys Meredith-Barrett; George Raymond; Dylan Walsh; Ioan Crabb: Ben Joyce; Zac Morgan: Ben Evans; Adam Williams; Ryan John: Aled Davies; Llion Williams: Kieron Jones; Rhys Price; Tom Clarke. Replacements: Cas Lewis; Tommy Reynolds; James Goldsmith; Rhys ‘Lossin’ Price; Aaron Foster.

Haverfordwest: Ollie Roberts: Jack Evans; Matty Phillips (Capt); Archie Thomas; Scott Candler: Stuart Morris; Liam Eaton: Dan Berry; Jamie Zambas; Tom Carrington: Karl Busch; Jack Clancy: Andrew Williams; Mikey Griffiths; Jonathan Mason. Replacements: Ieuan Jones; Steve Thomas; Gethin Bateman; Lee Summons; Matthew John.
