Narberth Man of the Match - Ilan Phillips

Championship:

Cracking win for young Otters

Lewys Gibby - two tries for The OttersNarberth 31 - Maesteg Quins 3

Narberth produced another excellent home performance as two tries from Lewys Gibby helped them to a convincing bonus point victory over Maesteg Quins, with The Otters doing much of the spade work as they went in 12-3 ahead at the interval – and scored 19 unanswered points afterwards.

The Quins opened the scoring with a penalty from Owen Howe but talented young centre Ilan Phillips, later chosen as man of the match as he played alongside another excellent young player in Hedd Nicholas, opened the home account with a well-taken try, converted by Jonathan Rogers.

Gibby has scored well from his regular spot at scrum half but on this occasion he was switched to the wing and showed his ability to find the try line as he finished off a flowing move that started on half way, although Rogers was off target with the conversion attempt.
The Otter pack really raised the tempo after the interval as skipper Alex Jenkins was joined by Caine Rees-Jones, Josh and Kyle Hamer as good ball winners and Gibby added his second unconverted score.

Then Narberth were awarded a penalty try for a deliberate knock-on by a Quins’ player in front of the posts and they rounded off their scoring with a try by scrum half George McDonald which was converted by Ianto Griffiths to round off an excellent team performance that deservedly sens Sean Gale’s team into the top four in the table.

Welsh Cup Division One:

Pembroke’s losing run continues

(K) Gorseinon 38 - Pembroke 3

Pembroke showed their battling qualities as they lost at Gorseinon but never gave up trying and did well to fulfil the fixture in view of the fact that neither side had any chance of moving into the next round.

Jordan Evans and Tom Cabot led the forwards against a big home pack in which second row Nicky Southgate was immense in the ball-winning stakes and was rewarded with two tries.
Travis Mathias and Rhys Griffiths also played well as they made first-team debuts for The Scarlets.

Luke Alderwick scored Pembroke’s only points with a penalty after good work by skipper Seamus ‘Moose’ Wiseman, Will Edwards, and Jordan Cornick but Gorseinon had another match-winner in winger inside centre Darren Wilcox, who used his blistering pace to claim a hat-trick of tries as Tim O’Kelly also landed all five conversions and an early penalty.

Pembroke: Matthew Lewis: Barry Alderman-John; Shaun Darling; Lewis Davies; Steve Brown: Luke Alderwick; Jarred Sharrat: Tom Cabot; Seamus Wiseman (Capt); Lloyd Davies: Will Edwards; Andrew Evans: Rhodri Walters; Jordan Evans; Jordan Cornick. Welsh Cup Division Two:

Seasiders’ bonus point could prove vital

Jack Gooding - vital try for The SeasidersJake Roberts - Tenby United Man of the MatchPontarddulais 22 - Tenby United 17

Tenby United went down to defeat at Pontarddulais but grabbed a late bonus point as reward for a battling performance against a big Bont side – but have still not finished their interest in this competition because they must wait to see if their previously-postponed match against Heol y Cyw sees them having to play when other teams are being awarded 20-0 victories for opponents failing to fulfil fixtures.

Home centre Llyr Gealy was the undoubted star of The Bont’s victory as he scored all their points from three tries, two conversions and a penalty, starting off the scoring from a driving maul and grabbing an unconverted try, followed by a penalty.

But with their pack going well The Seasiders enjoyed a good second quarter and from a scrum in the home 22 Jack Gooding popped up in the centre to take a crash ball and score at the posts for Lloyd Thomas to convert in his 100th match for Tenby United.

But against the run of play Gealy claimed a try which he also converted before a Lloyd Thomas’ penalty from 40 metres reduced the deficit.

The Seasiders were unable to turn pressure into points as they continued to attack and paid the price as Gealy again spotted a gap and sped through and added the extra points.

The Seasiders had the final word, however, when they pressed hard late on and a series of drives and quick surges by individual ball carriers allowed skipper Luke Dedman to muscle his way over and Lloyd Thomas converted.

In a solid all-round team performance No 8 Jake Roberts produced a man of the match performance and Iwan Davies had a promising debut on the wing, whilst the pack gave total commitment against a big opposing eight – and now The Seasiders must wait for a ruling by the WRU on their one game not decided!.

Tenby United: Gwion Jones: Iwan Davies; Luke Hartland; Toby Smith; Jack Gooding: Lloyd Thomas; Cam Broadhurst: Ethan Morgan; Dan Allen; Rob Luly: Frankie Boyd; Luke Dedman (Capt): Jimmy Davies; Will Swales; Jake Roberts. Welsh Cup Division Three:

Quins lose out to last-ditch score

Sam Rasher James - scored all the points for Quins against Tonmawr(J) Pembroke Dock Harlequins 12 - Tonmawr 15

Pembroke Dock Harlequins came very close to finishing their campaign in this competition with second place of Section J but after clawing their way back from an early 10-point deficit to take a narrow lead they conceded a late try to give Tonmawr a slightly fortuitous victory.

The Quins had several early chances but winger Tom Donovan and centre Gethin Bradney just missed out close to the line and the visitors opened their account with an unconverted try by livewire hooker Ben Baker-Rees right on half time.

Tonmawr doubled their lead five minutes into the second half as powerful No 8 Wes Brown ploughed his way over – but The Quins came back with an excellent try from winger Sam ‘Rasher’ Brown after a cracking break by centre Geraint Powell and a clever kick ahead which found  James, who was lurking with intent.

James added his second soon afterwards with another well-worked try that he also converted and a Quins’ victory seemed on the cards.

But Tonmawr had the final word after they had spurned a couple of  relatively straightforward  penalties because they didn’t have a recognised place kicker as The Quins relaxed their grip on the play - and it was the bustling hooker Ben Baker-Rees who rounded off a catch and drive move for his second, and winning, score.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins: Kobey Thomas: Sam ‘Rasher’ James; Gethin Bradney; Geraint Powell; Tom Donovan: Keiran Machin; Tom Wheeler: Connor Kolmel; Jayden Walker; Dan McLeod: Ben Gibby; Jack Byrne: Jack Mallitte; Danny Wilkes; Hywel Baker. Replacements: Jordan Palmer; Sam Brown; Jack Brown; Tom Hagan; Rhys Bradney.

All Blacks battle back for deserved victory

(K) Cefneithin 12 Neyland  16

Luke Griffiths-Dawes - vital try and man of the match for NeylandNeyland finished their Welsh Cup journey for this season with a deserved away win at Cefneithin as they trailed 7-5 in a tight first half but fought back, playing some attractive running rugby that will have pleased coach Steve Evans and team manager Peter ‘Jack’ Davies.

The All Blacks took the lead after only five minutes as the back row of Ben Williams, Owain and Iestyn Evans helped set up the platform for Owen Hamer to put half back partner George Evans over for an unconverted try.

They continued to have half chances but the final stray pass or taking of wrong options saw no further points coming and just before the break they were hit by a Cefneithin try from Lewis Godden which outside half Richard Watts converted.

Watts also added a penalty soon after the restart but the All Blacks replied with a cracking try from prop Luke Griffiths-Dawes, the man of the match, after the ball had passed through several hands before put his head back and powered his way to the posts for Evans to add the extras.

But Watts notched two penalties for the home side to put his team 16-12 in front before The All Blacks mounted one last committed effort which saw Cefneithin concede three penalties – and from the final one a terrific lineout drive was held up short but Harrison Grice was on hand to plunge over the line to put his team a point in front before Evans’ conversion was the icing on the Neyland cake!

Neyland: Henry McBeth: Jordan Allen-Wright; Ben Millward; Adam Peel;  Matthew Coles: George Evans; Owen Hamer: Luke Griffiths-Dawes; Alex Swales; Rasi Cataki: Mark James;  Simon Phillips: Iestyn Evans; Owain Evans; Ben Williams. Replacements: Harrison Grice; Stuart Phillips; Andrew Slark; Rhys Power; Jasper Endine.

Haverfordwest win lineout ball - pic William John

Blues well beaten but still head the table

(L) Llangadog 25 Haverfordwest 5

Haverfordwest made the journey to Llangadog as section leaders but suffered a disappointing defeat against the small village side from Carmarthenshire which plays in Division Three (West) B and currently sits in tenth position.

The Blues were on top in the set pieces but needed to use their backs a little more and their only score was an unconverted try from skipper Jonathan Mason from his No 8 berth.

Llangadog looked for a more expansive game and had tries by Rhys Thomas and Rhys Evans, who also slotted three penalties.

Dafydd Jenkins also kicked a penalty brace to set the seal on a deserved win – but Haverfordwest still go forward despite this reverse.

Haverfordwest: Johnny White: Scott Candler; Lee Davies; Josh Thomas; Archie Thomas: Owain Roberts; Lee Summons: Terry Lovell; Jamie Zambas; Tom Carrington: Karl Busch; Jack Clancy: Will Blackburn; Simon Thomas; Jonathan Mason (Capt). Replacements: Ben Llewelyn; Gethin Bateman; Matt Layton; Matthew John; T Davies.

Furnace make it hot for Cardis

Tom Taylor - scored only try for Cardigan(O) Furnace 23 - Cardigan 8

Cardigan just missed out on a place in the next round as they failed to build on their two previous wins and were nudged out of top spot so that Taibach edged through by a single point after opponents Llandybie had failed to turn up and so forfeited the game.

The Teifisiders were ten points adrift at half time as Furnace grabbed a try from left winger Jake O’Toole – and added a second score right on half time from flanker Ollie Thomas.

Cardigan skipper Tom Taylor claimed his team’s only try and John Lumb marked his return from injury with a penalty but home fly half Dafydd Green scored a try, which he converted, and two penalties to ruin The Cardis’ hopes of making progress despite the fact that they had two away matches, including a deserved win at Taibach, and Llandybie failed to show for their only home game at the King George Vth Playing Fields!
