Feature Match – Division Three (West):

Blues bag vital bonus-point win

Haverfordwest 62 - Amman United 15

Haverfordwest knew they might face a real challenge from Amman United after they had won by   29-22 in the reverse fixture – and it looked as if another tight tussle was in prospect as they trailed 7-10 midway through the first half – but took control to establish a big lead at the break and were runaway winners to show their right to be promotion contenders (Writes Bill Carne).

The Blues started well when Liam Eaton broke down the blindside and fed captain Jack Evans to score in the corner. – and Adam Phillips with a great conversion made it 7-0 after 8 minutes.

But Amman hit back immediately when Haverfordwest gave away an attacking penalty and visiting outside half Iestyn Griffiths landed the kick from in front of the posts. Just a couple of minutes later, following a couple of penalties conceded by The Blues, Amman took the lead with a try, again from Griffiths, from a close-range ruck, which the No 10 converted.

Great scoring spell for The Blues

Haverfordwest kicked into gear and controlled matters as Adam Phillips used his boot to put them deep in the opposition half. From the resultant territory Karl Busch rumbled over from close range to put Haverfordwest back in front.

Then came the turning point when young centre Liam Hughes cut through in midfield and outpaced the Amman defence from half way to score under the posts – and the talented Hughes doubled his tally just two minutes later when strong Haverfordwest defence forced Amman into an error and Scott Candler got a boot to the bouncing ball. Hughes again used his pace to reach the ball first and touch down. Both tries were converted by Phillips to widen the gap

As half time approached, Jack Evans ensured the bonus point for Haverfordwest as the skipper got on the end of some brilliant attacking play with Phillips, Iestyn Arnold and Hughes timing their passes to perfection making the score 33-10 at half time after Phillips added the extras.

Amman start well but Haverfordwest take control

Amman started the second half the brighter of the two sides and brought high tempo to their attack and The Blues struggled to stop the offloads as the final pass fell to scrum half Lee Evans, who went over for their second score.

The rest of the points, however, came from the Blues and started when the bustling Busch added his second after a quickly taken tap penalty and a strong run from James Hart, giving the offload for Busch to go under the posts untouched.

Pacy winger Scott Candler scored in the corner after a great counter attack from Blues full back Jake Morgan, who slipped as he looked to beat the last man but Candler picked up from the ruck to speed over.

Morgan grabs a brace – and Bush claims a deserved hat-trick

Morgan then scored two in quick succession, both from great support play. The first followed a fine break from the returning Owain Roberts, who delivered an outrageous offload right into Morgan’s stride. The second resulted from great work from Evans, who beat two defenders on his way to the five-metre line before finding Morgan in support.

The forwards rounded off the scoring with a clever line-out play that put Karl Busch over for his hat-trick to give The Blues, despite not being quite at their best a huge win. Focus now shifts to the all-important fixture at Llandeilo next Saturday, knowing that a win would put them on the brink of promotion to division two.

Championship Division (West):

Crymych play well in the first half but then run out of steam

Trebanos 55 - Crymych 10

Jon Hill - scored a try for CrymychCrymych played really well in the first half against Trebanos but after being level at that time conceded an unanswered 45 points after the break as the home side completed the double, following a 50-26 win at Parc Lloyd Thomas.

Skipper Daf Griffiths and centre Jon Hill claimed The Preseli Men’s unconverted tries in the opening half and there was no shortage of effort from the likes of Tom Taylor, Dion Gibby and Matthew Freebury.

Trebanos fill back Iestyn Griffiths gabbed three of his teams nine tries, with the others coming from centres Isaac Davies (2) and George Sheppard, winger Jack Lewis and outside half Christian Jones, who controlled play as his pack took control and ended up with 20 points from two tries and five conversions.

Division Two (West):

Seagulls fight back well from a poor start

Fishguard & Goodwick 27 - Tycroes 22

Max Jones - Another try for Fishguard No 9Jack Richards scored a deserved try for The SeagullsFishguard & Goodwick made a sluggish start to their match at The Moors against Tycroes as they fell 12 points adrift and the visitors must have thought the double was on after beating The Seagulls by 12-10 at home.

In that time Tycroes had opened with a neatly-conceived try by scrum half Gareth Rees, which was converted by his partner Geraint Rees, and then added a quality second score as quick hands in the midfield allowed winger Jack Griffiths to show The Seagulls’ cover-defence a clean pair of heels as he sprinted 40 metres up the touchline.

Fishguard gradually came back into contention as skipper Rhys Lewis, the outstanding Sion Colella and scrum half Max Jones all began to exert an influence – but all they could muster was a penalty by outside half Jake Jenkins, to trail 3-12 at half time.

But whatever coaches Tom Meredith and Nathan Jenkins said at half time it worked because second row Jack Richards scored an unconverted try as reward for his efforts up front alongside Cai Llewellyn, Jac and Will Delaney, Liam Wilkes and Will Robinson.

Tycroes did manage a second Geraint Rees penalty but then The Seagulls managed to find an extra effort and No 9 Jones snipped up the blind side for an unconverted try and then there were two tries in very quick succession as Jack Delaney dived over and Kial Keane was put away by his back colleagues, both converted by Jake Jenkins.

To be fair to Tycroes they did manage to snatch a bonus point with a last-gasp penalty try but by then The Seagulls were home and dry, with the full five points to keep them securely in sixth spot in the section table.

Fishguard & Goodwick: Dan Evans: Dec Thomas; Mike Jenkins; Kial Keane; Ed Rathbone:  Jake Jenkins; Max Jones: Liam Wilkes; Will Robinson; Will Delaney: Jack Richards; Cai Llewellyn: Jac Delaney; Sion Colella; Rhys Lewis (Capt). Replacements: Kevin Orrmonde; Simon James; Griff Williams; Ifan Evans; Rhys Evans.

Trueman takes The Mariners to vital basement win over Trimsaran

Milford Haven 26 - Trimsaran 12

Robbie Jones - man of the match for Milford Haven James Trueman - scored 21 points for Milford Haven21 points by winger James Trueman helped Milford Haven beat Trimsaran with a strong second-half team performance – and some sterling work by full back Robbie Jones was also recognised as he was chosen as man of the match for his yeoman work at the back and ability to switch defence into attack.

In a game where The Mariners were shown three yellow cards, plus two for Trimsaran, the first half was very competitive but with few points as Treuman slotted penalties either side of an unconverted try by flanker Emyr Evans as the home side led 6-5.

Evans added a second Trimsaran score, this time converted, but Trueman was already on target at the start of the second half as he landed two more penalties – and with Zak Davies Jordan Palmer and coach Zak France-Miller leading up front The Mariners added two quality tries as No 8 Davies broke from a scrum near the opposition 22 and then Trueman benefitted from his pack’s work-rate to speed over from a similar distance, both tries converted.by the Trueman, on the day a model of accuracy that was so important

So victory was assured because before the game both teams were locked on 19 points, eager to escape the second slot for the ‘Dreaded Drop’ alongside Narberth Athletic.

But The Mariners’ joy was tempered by the fact that popular assistant coach Jonathan Thomas, playing at outside half, was stretchered off late in the game with a knee injury – and sports lovers around the country will wish this talented all-round sportsman a speedy recovery.

Milford Haven: Robbie Jones: Jack Roberts; Owyn Griffiths; Dan Jenkins (Capt); James Trueman: Jonathan Thomas; Dan McClelland: Ben Jenkins; Luke Ryan; Aaron Mayne: Zac France-Miller; Ethan Aldred: Jordan Palmer; Ieuan Davies; Zac Davies. Replacements: Aaron Davies; Josh Palmer; Ollie Warlow; Quinn McGrath; Cian Harries.

Division Four (West) A:

Saints slammed by powerful Ponty

Pontyberem 62 - St Davids 0

Pontyberem continued their relentless march to the section silverware with this crushing victory over za St Davids squad deprived of a number of key players and arriving in cars after their long journey because the bus they had booked was unable to be used.

The Saints had pushed Ponty hard in their previous tussle, eventually going down 35-24 but on this occasion, they were out of sorts and were already 36 points adrift at the interval – so there was no way back but restricted the Ponty points machine to 26 points in a slightly tighter second period.

For the record, the home tries came from Luke Williams (3), Josh Parnell (2), Elis Nicholas, Macody Jones, Llyr Williams, Benjamin Morris and Carwyn Lynch, with Rhodri Lewis chipping in with six conversions.

It left The Saints with a disappointing day – and they even missed their usual sing-along in the Ponty headquarters because of so many players forced to drive and so unable to enjoy a pint or two!

St Davids: Iwan Davies: Daf Davies; Ben Joyce; Danny Voyce; Bob Froy: Aaron Foster; Owain Swaine: Ben Lloyd; Adam Williams; Charlie Lavin: Iestyn Owen; Aled Davies: James Goldsmith; Nathan Foster; Daf Williams. Replacements: Ethan Griffiths; Tom Goodson; Will Lewis; Lewis Parry; Luke Brooks.

Scarlets enjoy a try fest as Huw heads their try scorers

Pembroke 60 - Llanybydder 7

Huw Silcox - 4 tries for Pembroke centrePembroke centre Huw Silcox led his team to a ten-try demolition of a gritty Llanybydder team which never gave up trying – and The Scarlets showed their sporting spirit as they loaned Llan second row Toby Hounsell and youth team prop Rhys Beynon to ensure their opponents started with 15 players.

Silcox showed his ability to be in the right place at the right time with his try quartet, and he was followed by Luke Watkins, who was close behind with a hat-trick on his first time in the scrum-half berth,

Winger Toby Pratt (2) and full back Zach Evans completed the try count, which were all scored by backs – but The Scarlets pack deserve a mention because their hard graft set up the scoring chances – and it was perhaps unusual that all five conversions came from a forward in outstanding No 8 Zak Shaw, who again played really well alongside hooker Dan Davies and Rob Weston, playing only his third game of the season.

Their replacement ‘bench’ also played well, with Jack Oliver and Leon Stuart to the fore – and both Toby and Rhys played hard as Llan guests.

The visitors only score came from Steffan Thomas, converted by Steff Bonsall and Llanybydder showed how to cope in adversity by making sure the fixture was fulfilled!

Pembroke: Zach Evans: Tobi Pratt; Huw Silcox; Rhys Johns; Charlie Sheils: Lewis Davies; Luke Watkins: Lloyd Davies (Capt); Dan Davies; Tommy Oakley: Rob Weston; Scott Powell: George Jones; Rhydian Eynon; Zak Shaw. Replacements: Seamus Wiseman, Dan Gosnold; Jack Oliver; Leon Stewart, Damo Stratford.

Emlyn cruise into second spot as Quins struggle

Dreigiau Emlyn 80 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 0

Steff W Evans man of the match for The Dragons. Curtesy Newcastle Emlyn RFCPembroke Dock Harlequins travelled to Ddol Wiber on the back of an excellent all-round team performance the previous weekend against Tenby United Athletic but a lack of availability and late withdrawals saw only a shadow of that squad remained to take on Dreigiau Emlyn.

And the outcome was perhaps inevitable as an experienced Dragons’ squad ran riot to lead 40-0 at the interval and finish with 12 tries, ten converted, to see them leap over the Quins into second place in the section table.

For the record, The Dragons’ tries were scored by Ben Hesford (2), Osian Taylor (2), Owain Kremens, Osian Dafis, Osian Meylor, Deiniol Rees, Celt Davies (2), Llyr Jenkins (plus a conversion) and Steff W Evans (plus nine conversions).

Pembroke Dock Harlequins: Ben Hathaway (Capt): Simon James; Gethin Bradney; Jack Brown, O Turner: Craig Barnett; Adam Cawley: Alfie Ball; Jack Hagan; Dan Moseley: Lewys Scourfield; Rhys Doyle:  Liam Scourfield; Harry Owen; Arron James. Replacements:  Steve John; Rhys Bradney; Ben Gibby; Dean Wilcox.
