Josh Hamer scores for The Otters

Championship Division (West):

Lewys Gibby - Narberth supporters player of the year with Wendy RossiterNarberth 61 - Maesteg Quins 7

Narberth rounded off a wonderful season in the Championship (West) with a convincing victory over Maesteg Quins at The Lewis Lloyd Ground where they were already 40 points clear at half time and despite Liam Gadd making a number of changes to give the whole squad a share of the excitement, they still outscored The Quins by five tries to one in the second period.

Leading the way was centre Hedd Nicholas, with a hat-trick and at the end of a one-sided encounter it was skipper Tom Powell who received the special cut-glass engraved bowl in front of a large and very enthusiastic crowd in the stand.

Pacy winger Geraint Llewellyn opened The Otters’ account when excellent handling by the backs, including Rhys Harries,  after a solid platform laid by the pack, saw the first score, converted by Jonathan Rogers, who soon added more extra points when centre Hedd Nicholas sped over for two tries in quick succession, one converted by Rogers.

Narberth are just championThe front row of Brad Davies, Tom Clarke and Tom Slater was immense alongside other set-piece ball winners in Rhys Williams and Alex Jenkins so that skipper Powell, Josh Hamer and especially No 8 Roy Osborn enjoyed the freedom of the park alongside Lewys Gibby and Rogers at half back so that full back Ashley Sutton sped through for the bonus point try .

In the closing moments enjoyed by the Narberth supporters there was a second try for Llewellyn and the third by the powerful Nicholas, both converted by the accurate left boot of Rogers.

With the game won, coach Gadd rang the changes to reward some of his loyal fringe players and one such was Ianto Griffiths, who has been a wonderful servant to the club but has decided to retire – and was soon involved as he converted a try by centre Ilan Phillips and then the loudest cheer of the afternoon came when Griffiths sped through for a try which he also converted!

Maesteg Quins contribution to the game was finally rewarded with a try by replacement winger Jack Riggs, converted by Owen Howe outside half Owen Howe after good work by Travis Huntley, Brandon Jones and Jack Goodridge.

Another try for Narberth for MoM Hedd Nicholas

But it was appropriate that The Otters had the final word when flanker Josh Hamer’s outstanding work was rewarded with a try under the posts and Ianto Griffiths added the simple extras to set the seal on a long and outstanding career and provide a fitting end to Narberth RFC’s fantastic season.

Narberth: Ashley Sutton: Geraint Llewellyn; Ilan Phillips; Hedd Nicholas; Rhys Harries: Jonathan Rogers; Lewys Gibby: Bradley Davies; Tom Clarke; Tom Slater: Rhys Williams; Alex Jenkins: Tom Powell (Capt); Josh Hamer; Roy Osborn. Replacements: Kyle Hamer; George Rossiter; Richard Rees; Alex Williams; Ianto Griffiths.

Division Two (West):

Mariners continue their recent improvement

Milford Haven 34 - Tenby United 12

Milford Haven produced one of their best results of the season as they welcomed old rivals and already-promoted Tenby United to The Obs and outscored them by six tries to two to gain revenge for a 13-10 defeat when the teams met previously at Heywood Lane.

The Mariners had flanker Ieuan Davies as their man of the match for his outstanding ball-winning and support play after his successful switch from playing on the wing and he was part of a rampant pack which supplied quality possession for half backs Dan McClelland and Efan Morgan to use well, with veteran winger Lee Riley playing well in his penultimate game for The Mariners before stepping down to take on a coaching role.

But it was up front that Milford held the edge against a Seasiders’ team showing 11changes from their previous match as Scott Buirds scored two tries and brother Jimmy also got on the try sheet, as did  replacement prop Ben Groves and Ieuan Davies, whilst Jay Goodall, Jack Morgan, Aaron Mayne, Luke Ryan, Dewi Wiliams and excellent young skipper Zac Davies also caught the eye for their work rate.

Robbie Jones was the only back to score but Ollie Rothero, Dan Jenkins and James Trueman also defended well as The Seasiders could only muster tries by centre Jack Gooding and No 8 Jack Broadhurst, one converted by Harry Rossiter after railing 17-7 at half time and never really getting on top as The Mariners showed what they can do against the top sides in the section in this ninth win of a long campaign.

Milford Haven: Ollie Rothero: Lee Riley; Robbie Jones; Dan Jenkins; James Trueman: Efan Morgan; Dan McClelland: Aaron Mayne; Luke Ryan; Jimmy Buirds: Jay Goodall; Zac Davies (Capt): Jack Morgan; Ieuan Davies; Dewi Williams. Replacements: Dai Sweeny; Ben Groves; Scott Buirds; James Wiliams; Dean McSparron.

Tenby United: Will James: Will Allen; Brad Cramb; Jack Gooding; Jordan Asparassa: Harry Rossiter; Fletcher Broadhurst: Frankie Boyd; Kyle Rossiter; James Morgan: Tom Barrass (Capt); Liam Pugh:  Caleb O’Neill; Jack Brown; Jack Broadhurst. Replacements: Ethan Morgan; Luke Dedman; Dan Colley; Cam Broadhurst; Gwion Jones; Tom Lewis.

Seagulls swoop for bonus-point win

Fishguard  Goodwick 36 - Tycroes 26

Max Jones - another two tries for the outstanding Fishguard scrum halfFishguard & Goodwick played their way to a bonus-point victory at The Moors against basement battlers Tycroes and in doing so avenged a disappointing 27-13 defeat when the teams met in Tycroes.

Since then, The Seagulls have moved into sixth place in the table, well away from the danger zone, so coach Nathan Jenkins can take satisfaction from the progress made by a very young squad which was led by the inspirational Sion Colella in the absence of injured skipper James Griffiths.

Geraint Rees had given the visitors the early lead with a penalty and after Fishguard had played really well to claim a team try by full back Kial Keane, converted by No 10 Jake Jenkins, a second Rees penalty kept them in contention.

But then The Seagulls exerted their power up front as Will Delaney, Will Lewis and Iwan McVeigh anchored the scrum and Osian Rowe, Cai Llewellyn, Jac Delaney and Luke Freebury joined Colella in setting the platform from which Shane Rossiter scored from his centre berth playing on permit from Narberth Development Squad, with Colella adding their third try before Rees’s third penalty made the interval score 17-9 in The Seagulls’ favour.

Tycroes made the better start to the second half with a try from second row Mattew Owen, converted by Rees, but then scrum half Max Jones, rightly named man of the match for his ability to direct operations grabbed two tries, one rounding off a real team effort and the other more of a solo score, both goaled by Jenkins.

Simon James joined the fray for Fishguard and the veteran back rower, playing with his innate ability to be in the right place at the right time, ploughed over from fully five metres to make the game safe – but then the home side took their feet off the gas and allowed Tycroes to pouch two unconverted tries, by No 8 Sam Iles and centre Sean Jones, as reward for some hard work before The Seagulls settled things back down again and now have just one match left, a home tussle with bottom club Aman United on 11th May, who have won only once in 18 starts so far so Fishguard & Goodwick should certainly end their season on a winning note!

Fishguard & Goodwick:  Kial Keane: Rhys Evans; Shane Rossiter; Dan Cleary; Creegan Foot: Jake Jenkins; Max Jones: Will Delaney; Will Lewis; Iwan McVeigh: Osian Rowe; Cai Llewellyn: Luke Freebury; Sion Colella (Capt); Jac Delaney. Replacements: Ryan McVeigh; Simon James; Liam Wilkes; Henry Foster; Ed Bendall.

Division Three (West) A:

Nine-try Laugharne move a step away from title

Laugharne 59 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 0

Nico Setaro - took his Laugharne points tally to 335 for the seasonLaugharne are now just one step away from winning the section’s cut-glass trophy after they easy win over a Pembroke Dock Harlequins’ side which deserved every credit as their makeshift team battled away at Wooford Park – and now these teams meet again next Saturday at Bierspool with Laugharne hot favourites to complete the double and end a long season in style!

Jack Price’ Gethin Bradney, skipper Ben Hathaway and Andrew Edwards led The Quins early defensive action and it took Laugharne 18 minutes before they opened the scoring – but then the floodgates started to creak open and the home side opened up a 26-0 interval lead thanks to tries by hooker Lewis Jones, centres Owain Thomas and Liam Price, plus second row Carwyn Jones, three of them converted by player/coach Nico Setaro.

Hooker Jones added two further tries after the break to complete his hat-trick, as did talented centre Liam Price to add two more tries to his momentous total of late, with others coming from Owain Thomas (his second) and Nico Setaro, who ended up with nineteen points for the game – and now with an amazing points’ haul for the season of 335 with one game to go and, barring an absolute disaster, the section trophy and promotion to division two (west)!!
