Lewys Gibby - man of the match in Narberth victory

Otters come out on top after strong second half display

Beddau 22 - Narberth 40

Narberth completed a deserved double over Beddau with an excellent performance against a team known for its home form – and still very much in with a chance at the half way mark as they trailed 10-14 but had the slope and elements in their favour afterwards.

But The Otters raised the tempo as Lewys Gibby was outstanding at scrum half to win the man of the match award and with winger Josh Davies grabbing a try in each half as reward for his opportunism and work rate.

Gibby pushed the home defence to its limits and scored one of The Otters’ tries whilst half back partner Jon Rogers also kicked well for position and there was solid defence from Nick Gale, Ashley Sutton, Ianto Griffiths and the back row, including Roy Osborn, who scored their other try in the first half, both converted by Gale.

Beddau had a try by loose head prop Mason Morgan, converted by outside half Ben Griffiths alongside a penalty.

The home side also mustered further scores by centre Adam Ashford and hooker Ethan Coombs, one converted by Griffiths but The Otters’ pack kept winning quality possession by Rhys Williams, Alex Jenkins, Kyle Hamer, Tom Slater and Bradley Davies which was utilised to the full.

Josh Davies grabbed a second try and others came from centre Ilan Phillips, flanker Caine-Rees-Jones and the ubiquitous Gibby, with Gale adding two more conversions before going off injured late on and Rogers converting the final score of a good win to go with their 21-13 home success earlier in the campaign.

Preseli Men power on in quest for the silverware

Pembroke 5 - Crymych 57

Tomos Lewis - two tries for Crymych centreCrymych gained their expected big win at Crickmarren but Pembroke deserved credit for battling away in adversity and actually opened the scoring early on before The Preseli Men powered to a 26-5 interval lead and added another 31 points after the break.

It was prop Lloyd Thomas who claimed The Scarlets’ solitary score as reward for his consistency, rounding off a controlled catch and drive in which Will Edwards, Adam Davies, Tom Cabot and skipper Seamus ‘Moose’ Wiseman were involved.

But Crymych soon got into their stride and claimed tries from winger Owain Evans, Huw Rees (2) and flanker Rhydian Howells, three of them converted by full back Adam Phillips.

Pembroke never gave up their tackling as they were forced to play on the back foot but Crymych were adept at moving play wide to stretch the home defence and then pouncing so that tries came at regular intervals via centre Tomos Lewis (2), replacement hooker Lee Griffiths, outside half Ifan Phillips and No 15 Adam Phillips, who also landed another three conversions as The Preseli Men completed a high-scoring double, having beaten Pembroke at home by 66-5.

Division Two (West):

Seagulls so close to taking The Bont’s 100% record

Fishguard & Goodwick 19 - Pontarddulais 24

Fishguard & Goodwick almost caused a shock result at The Moors against a Pontarddulais team boasting a 100% record and having already beaten The Seagulls by 25-8 at home.

The home side had clawed their way back from a 5-25 interval deficit to trail by five points but attacked in depth in the closing seconds where a try seemed likely as The Bont’s cover had been lacerated – but the final pass, with the line beckoning nearby, was knocked on and the final whistle blown.

The Seagulls were forced to field a much-changed side but those stepping in showed coaches Nathan and Steve Jenkins that they could cope in a fairly even opening period before The Bont served notice of intent with a push over by second row Jacob Miles from a lineout drive, with centre Llyr Gealey adding the extra points.

But The Seagulls bounced back with an excellent try by talented young winger Dylan Scott after quick hands gave him the chance to finish well in the corner – but right on the interval Pontarddulais added a second try when influential No 8 Nicky Hopkins made it 12-5.

But at that stage it seemed a decent scoreline for The Seagulls with second use of the elements but the referee played a protracted period of time added on which perplexed home supporters with a stop watch because in that time The Bont added two more tries by centre Gealy and Josh Hodge, converting one, to help send  his side into an unexpected 19-point interval lead.

But The Seagulls showed typical spirit as they battled away and were rewarded with a second trier for teenage winger Scott which was converted by centre James Griffiths, captaining the team on the day and doing a good job.

Sion Colella was involved in all the home side did and he crossed for The Seagulls’ third try, again converted by Griffiths, to set up a tense finale.

But then home hopes were ruined in those final moments when they might have earned at least a draw and even victory – and The Bont returned east a very relieved team indeed!

Fishguard & Goodwick: Creegan Foot: Max Jones/Kai Bailey; James Griffiths (Capt); Dan Cleary; Dylan Scott: Jake Jenkins: Max Jones/Kai Bailey: Will Delaney; Liam Wilkes; Iwan McVeigh: Simon James; Griff Williams: Will Lewis; Cai Llewellyn; Sion Colella. Replacements: Jason Nicholls; Kyle Colella; Mark Butler; Jordan James; Dan Evans; Ed Rathbone; Ed Bendall.

Williams wins it for The Mariners with late penalty

Milford Haven 22 - Tycroes 20

Dan McClelland - two tries in Milford Haven winOutside half James Williams was the toast of his Milford Haven team mates and supporters as his penalty success from the very last kick of their home match with Tycroes saw them gain their third win of the season and narrow the gap in the league table over their opponents.

Tycroes had won 13-3 at home against The Mariners and it was evident from the outset that this was going to be another tough tussle against Nathan Williams’ team, with assistant coach Steve Martin having to play at full back and showing he still has the touch alongside skipper Lee Riley, centres Dan Birch and Dan Jenkins, plus a hard-working pack that didn’t yield an inch.

But The Mariners still trailed 5-14 at half time as Dan McClelland scored an unconverted try as reward for his consistency and commitment at scrum half but Tycroes scored an unconverted try by winger Jack Griffiths alongside three penalties by full back Geraint Rees.

Rees also added two more penalties after half time as he punished any indiscretions by The Mariners but No 9 McClelland grabbed his second score to keep his team going forward whilst prop Jimmy Buirds also crossed the whitewash, both scores converted by No 10 Williams to set up a grand-stand finish.

And it was Milford Haven whose persistence was rewarded as they refused to settle for second best and earned that late penalty which James Williams calmly slotted to start plenty of celebrations for their squad and relieved supporters!

Milford Haven: Steve Martin: Lee Riley (Capt); Dan Jenkins; Dan Birch; Jamie Lewis: James Williams; Dan McClelland: Iestyn Howells; Luke Ryan; Ben Jenkins: Zac Davies; Jay Goodall: Dylan Evans; Zac France-Miller; Ethan Aldred. Replacements: Trystan Lewis; Aaron Mayne; Kieran Milkin; Jimmy Buirds; Jack Johnston.

Seasiders go second after a real battle

Mumbles 3 - Tenby United 8

Cam Broadhurst - Vital try for Tenby UnitedTenby United produced a terrific performance at Mumbles which saw few points but a mammoth effort from both squads ended with The Seasiders scoring the only try and completed the double over their opponents after winning their previous clash by 25-24 at home.

It also allowed Tenby to leapfrog their opponents into second spot in the section table and what must have pleased head coach Jonathan Evans was the way his players stayed focussed under pressure and when  all-out defence was required not a single tackle was missed against a very good side.

The Seasiders’ pack was outstanding on a soft pitch, with the tight five ensuring quality possession as skipper Luke Dedman led by example and the back row covering well as a unit so that half backs Cam Broadhurst and Lloyd Thomas were able to call the shots after Thomas had landed a fifth-minute penalty as reward for their efforts.

Mumbles showed their determination, however, as they drew level 12 minutes later when Adam Rowlands landed a penalty before both kickers missed another chance at goal.

When Mumbles were reduced to 14 men with a yellow card at the end of the half it allowed The Seasiders to attack for a long period but were held out by great home defence – until an 8-9 combination at a close-range scrum allowed Jack Broadhurst to pick up and send brother Cam in at the corner.

The second half was equally combative as Mumbles had another yellow card and Tenby had two but although both enjoyed periods of pressure there was good defence, as typified for the visitors by last-ditch tackles from flanker Dan Colley and winger Matt Morgan.

Mumbles had one last chance to snatch the verdict with a scrum five in front of The Seasiders’ posts but the ball was stolen away and Cam Broadhurst was delighted hoof the ball over the dead-ball line and send The Seasiders home with their ninth win of the season!

Tenby United: Gwion Jones: Jack Gooding; Max Brindley; Luke Waygood; Matthew Morgan: Lloyd Thomas; Cam Broadhurst: Frankie Boyd; Jack Brown; Rob Luly: Tom Barrass; Luke Dedman (Capt):  Jordan Evans; Dan Colley; Jack Broadhurst. Replacements:  George Rossiter; Charlie Patching; Liam Pugh; Ryan Bolton; Jake Henson.

Cardis gain fantastic revenge as Blues miss chances to seal victory

Cardigan 26 - Haverfordwest 25

What a difference half a season can make as Haverfordwest travelled to Cardigan having beaten the Teifisiders by 67-0 at home but somehow contrived to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory as the home side kept plugging away and were eventually good value for victory.

Yet another comfortable win seemed on the cards as The Blues moved smoothly into a 15-0 lead thanks to a try by scrum half Liam Eaton from the back of a lineout and a cracking score for winger Lee Summons as centre Jack Evans sliced through from his own half. Full back Owain Roberts converted one and added a penalty, as well as hitting the bar with another long-range effort.

But The Blues made errors and right on half time were punished after No 8 Tom Taylor had shown how to do it with an excellent break and eventually winger Aaron Evans scored and No 10 Llyr Jones converted.

The Blues added a penalty try and another penalty by Roberts to keep in front but then The Teifisiders raised the tempo with great tries by flanker Geraint Williams, winger Iwan John and No 10 Jones, who also converted two of them to help take his team into a one-point lead.

Haverfordwest still had a chance to snatch the verdict but Roberts again found the woodwork and the ball was cleared so that Cardigan were able to celebrate a victory that was really enjoyed by their large crowd – but certainly not by the disbelieving Haverfordwest coaches after the match!

Cardigan: Alun Jenkins: Aaron Evans; Ben Rogers; Emyr Harries; Tom Griffiths: Llyr Jones; Danny Bradshaw: Luke Palmer-Davies; Rhodri Parry Jones; Andrew Fletcher: Sion Phillips; Dean Harries: Kieran Hurley; Geraint Williams; Tom Taylor. Replacements: Will Brice; Nathan Bowen; Rhodri Davies; Iwan John; Jac Davies.

Haverfordwest: Ollie Roberts:  Lee Summons; Jack Evans; Archie Thomas; Sam Webber:  Mikey Jones (Capt); Liam Eaton: Terry Lovell; Jamie Zambas; Tom Carrington: Karl Busch; Jack Clancy: Will Blackburn; Andrew Williams; Lewis Tingay. Replacements: Steve Thomas; Gethin Bateman; Tom Davies.

Laugharne run amok in ten-try bonanza

Laugharne 58 - Llangwm 12

Laugharne completed a high-scoring double over Llangwm as they followed their 70-0 success at Pill Parks with this ten-try victory at home.

But The Wasps deserve credit for the way that they refused to throw in the towel after a poor first period where they trailed 43-0 and managed to score two tries as reward for sticking to their task, the first a cracker of a score from winger Jack Roberts after some quick handling along his back line, and the other by No 8 Owain Jones after their pack had enjoyed a rare sustained period of pressure, with one converted by No 10 Keiran Owen.

Roberts had also caught the eye with his defensive tackling alongside flanker Mikey Phillips and flanker James Lewis but it was Laugharne who called the shots for much of the game with their powerful pack and slick handling by a pacy set of backs.

Leading the way with four tries was winger Stephen John alongside others from centres James Stephenson and Ritchie Waters, winger Tom Davies, prop Dorian Harries, flanker Rhodri Rees and second row Carl Smith, plus four conversions from Stephenson as Laugharne stay in contention near the top of the table with nine wins from 11 starts.

Llangwm: Matthew Hughes: Jack Roberts; Matthew Evans; Yale Grice; Ollie Gerson: Kieron Owen; Ollie Kersey:   Matthew Rees; Phil Llewellyn; Callum Jenkins: Dave Reynolds; Gavin Jones: James Lewis; Mikey Phillips; Owain Jones. Replacements: Dylan Philpott; Luke Dyer; Peni Bulubulowale; Temesia Kiraileuu; John Manuel Brown.

James Stephenson - 13 points for Laugharne

Saints enjoy their long trip up Cardigan Bay

Tregaron 10 - St Davids 36

Aaron Foster - good try by St Davids No 10St Davids five-hour round trip up the Cardigan Coast was duly reward with a bonus point victory over a gritty Tregaron side firmly ensconced at the foot of the table.

The Saints were perhaps still suffering a little travel sickness early on because they allowed the home team to enjoy some early possession which allowed Geraint Rowlands a try as reward for his yeoman efforts in the second row.

But The Saints drew level with a good try by their second row James Goldsmith, converted by full back Adam Phillips, who grafted hard up front alongside skipper Nathan Foster, Kieran Jones and Rhys Price – and they established an interval lead 12-5 when Phillips ran in a try of his own but was unable to add the extras.

And The Saints increased their lead straight from the kick-off in the second half when Rhys Price scored after a build up from The Saints’ own 22 and others came from dynamic scrum half Zac Morgan (2), Aaron Foster and Adam Phillips alongside his conversions.

St Davids: Adam Phillips: Rob Froy; Ben Joyce; George Raymond; Harvey Godkin: Aaron Foster; Zac Morgan: Adam Williams; Rhys Price; Ben Evans: Aled Davies; James Goldsmith: Nathan Foster (Capt); Kieron Jones; Tommy Reynolds/Andrew Groves. Replacements:  Charlie Lavin; Tommy Reynolds/Andrew Groves; Morgan Davies.
