Pembroke pack power pays dividends

Pembroke 25 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 5

After a late pitch inspection by the referee the eagerly-awaited local derby between Pembroke and Pembroke Dock Harlequins finally got under way at Crickmarren and both teams battled hard to overcome the awful weather to produce some quality rugby before the Scarlets gained revenge for a 24-18 reverse at Bierspool early in the campaign.

Excellent start for Scarlets

The Scarlets looked very strong up front and made an excellent start when they opened their account from a Quins’ defensive scrum which Pembroke did well to turn into pressure and when the ball squirted out it was centre Sean Dalling who gained the vital touch down before Luca Trimarco slotted the conversion – but Dalling had to leave the field injured.

The Quins had industry aplenty from Alex Pearce, Barry Parsons, Steff Halwood and Mark van Ryun but they also suffered a blow to their morale when they lost influential full back Damien Miller with a nasty eye injury and as a result Jonathan Rogers came on at outside half and No 10 Lewis Davies switched to the last line of defence.

Pembroke pack power pays off

Outside half Trimarco added a penalty after the platform had been laid up front by Pembroke’s big pack in which the front row of Jamie Braithwaite, Seamus Wiseman and Johnny Palmer set the tone in the scrums and Palmer was voted man of the match by the sponsors for his yeoman work. Also playing well at full back for the home side was youth team full back Luke Hartland, who was rock-solid in defence.

And with nine minutes of the half remaining the Scarlets grabbed their second try, this time from the powerhouse Dom Colman, although Trimarco was unable to add the extra points – but Pembroke could be satisfied with a 15-point interval cushion.

More scores for Scarlets

As the home pack assumed its power superiority via Will Edwards, Scott Powell, skipper Jordan Gwilliam, Sam Smith and Dom Colman there was an unconverted try by right wing Barry John which ensured a welcome bonus point and then Colman also rounded off more pressure with his second try as conditions worsened.

The Quins went close through Alex Pearce and Jake Griffiths but they could only muster a late consolation try from winger Wilson Curtis, playing on permit from Haverfordwest, so it is the Scarlets who deservedly claimed the bragging right between these old rivals separated by just a mile and a steep hill!

Cracking win for Crymych

Felinfoel 11 - Crymych 16

Rugby Reports for 26th March 2016Crymych produced a superb all-round team performance to beat second-placed Felinfoel and cause the surprise result of the day since the home side are favourites for promotion but were unable to hold off the determined visitors.

The win was even more creditable because the Preseli Men were only 6-5 ahead at half time with the prospect of 40 minutes playing into the strong wind and heavy rain – but they collectively rolled up their sleeves to take the precious points.

Felinfoel had clawed their way back to 11-all with only five minutes remaining but then the Crymych pack mounted one last offensive to score an unconverted try by No 8 Joe Powell and then the whole team defended like demons to move themselves another step away from the relegation zone.

Preseli Men claim narrow interval lead

Scrum half Luke Rogers gave Crymych an early lead with a penalty after strong work by his front row of Lewis Davies, Aled Harries and Scott Jenkins, ably assisted by Andrew Phillips and Joe Powell.

Rugby Reports for 26th March 2016Felinfoel responded with an unconverted try by No 8 Laurence Reynolds but Richard Sharp-Williams and Rhys Davies set up the platform for a second Rogers’ penalty before the break.

Hard-fought second half

The second period was no less hard-fought and although winger Nick Bevan continued his run of try scoring by racing over in the corner, two penalties by home fly half Aled Roberts tied things up.

But there was some excellent covering at the back by Carwyn James, Dylan Thomas, Tomi Jones and Sion Davies before that late try by Tom Powell saw the Preseli Men through to a deserved victory!

Crymych:  Carwyn James: Dylan Thomas; Tomi Jones; Sion Davies; Nick Bevan: Carwyn Jones; Luke Rogers: Lewis Davies; Aled Harries; Scott Jenkins: Andrew Phillips; Joe Powell: Richard Sharp-Williams; Rhys Davies; Tom Powell. Replacements: Trystan Griffiths; Rhys Richards; Dan Davies; Dyfan Dafydd.

Seasiders struggle at high-riding Waun

Waunarlwydd 41 - Tenby United 0

Waunarlwydd showed just why they are fourth in this tough division as they proved too strong up front for a gritty Tenby United side which never gave up trying but conceded seven tries without managing to pick up any points of their own.

The Seasiders had several players out with flu so gave the chance for youth players Connor Ennis and Alex Thomas to gain experience and they acquitted themselves well against a team who were fourth in the table at the outset – with Mark Heywood forsaking his normal centre role to play at No 8 alongside skipper Luke Hansford and Alex Thomas.

Richard Rossiter, for so many years a hooker, slotted in to the second row and Nicky Allen came out of retirement to sit on the replacements’ bench.

Changes have a telling effect on Tenby

But so many changes of personnel rarely help and Waunarlwydd got off to a good start with a try from blindside flanker Jacob Blackmore which full back Lee Evans converted.

Prop Chris Sealey added Waun’s second try, this time unconverted, before second row Wes Brown grabbed their third and Evans added the extra points.

There was no shortage of effort by the likes of Luke Dedman, Wesley Bonser, Lyndon Thomas and Rob Luly for the Seasiders but the home side wrapped up a bonus point before the interval when further forward pressure saw prop Steff Jones plough his way through.

Waun added further second-half tries by No 8 Luke Joseph, winger Jordan Clayford and a second by Blackmore, which Evans converted, to seal their tenth win in 16 outings, whilst the Seasiders are still without a win after the same number of games.

Tenby United: Luke Conbeer: Connor Ennis; Will Holmes; Jamie Williams; Gregg Lees-Griffiths: Aaron James, Nathan Lowe: Lyndon Jones; Wesley Bonser; Rob Luly: Luke Dedman; Richard Rossiter: Alex Thomas; Luke Hansford (Capt); Mark Heywood.Replacements: Dan Allen; Nicky Allen; Mark Wooles.
