All Blacks blitz Amman in excellent first half

Neyland 43 - Amman United 6

Brothers Owen, Josh and Kyle Hamer - all played key roles for NeylandNeyland defied the awful weather conditions, plus a heavy pitch that was made playable by the efforts of team manager Peter Davies, Nick Wilson and Robert Codd, to run in six tries and restrict an experienced set of opponents to just two penalties.

The All Blacks were already 36-6 ahead at the oranges and  they did have a red card and two yellows as they allowed themselves to be drawn into a bit of a dog-fight but in general stuck to the task as they pocketed a bonus point win to start catching up on their back log of fixtures.

They got off to a good start with an early try conceived by centre Tom Hughes, who supplied Rio Phillips with the scoring pass before the young No 10 converted.

But Amman showed why they have climbed up the table after a poor start as their pack won some good ball playing up the slope and there was some sharp handling by their backs as the fog descended – but desperate defending by skipper George Williams, plus the brotherly partnerships of Owin and Iestyn Evans, alongside Josh and Kyle Hamer, back in the All-Black strip and joining younger sibling Owen as key players saved conceding any tries.

But Amman scrum half Lee Evans, a top place kicker in the section, slotted two penalties to reduce the deficit to a single point before Neyland enjoyed a purple patch where good ball retention amongst the forwards allowed skipper George Williams to dive over, with Rip Phillips again adding the extras.

Neyland on a charge in the mistThat forward power then enabled second row George Evans to claim try No 3 and although Phillips missed the conversion, he quickly made amends with an excellent penalty in the conditions - and then converted further tries by Tom Hughes and Josh Hamer to establish that 30-point interval lead.

To be fair to Amman, they continued to run the ball at every opportunity after the break but handling errors inevitably increased in the worsening conditions – so that the only try of the second half saw Josh Hamer round off a sustained attack as he crossed at the posts, with Phillips adding the simple extra points.

The final quarter was something of a slog but both teams deserve credit for completing the game, before watching Wales just miss out against Scotland!

Ponty power too much for struggling Wasps

Pontyberem 64 - Llangwm 0

James Wade - tackled superbly for The WaspsJack Roberts - outstanding in defence for LlangwmPontyberem showed why they are runaway leaders of this division as they produced a ten0try demolition of a brave Llangwm side which never gave up trying but were already 40-0 down at the interval and did well to limit Ponty  to only four tries afterwards.

The Wasps tackled themselves to a standstill, with winger jack Roberts and No 8 James Wade outstanding as they were the Llangwm men of the match, with the usual 100% effort from the likes of Callum Jenkins, Dylan Philpott and scrum half Ian Griffiths, still helping out despite being close to 50 and always involved.

For the record, Ponty had tries from Corey Hardy (2), Wayne Williams (2), Gethin Thomas and Gethin Lynch, Ben Morris; Luke Williams, Elis Nicholas and Rhodri Lewis, who as well as calling the shots throughout, also landed seven conversions.

Llangwm: Alfie Elrick: Rhydian Jones; Owain Jones; Morgan Rees; Jack Roberts: Dylan Philpot; Ian Griffiths: Joe Newton; Ben Elrick; Callum Jenkins: Jake Thomas; Emyr Evans: Morgan Crowe; Ryan Cole; James Wade. Replacements:  Andrew Edwards; Seth Hughes; Dylan Rowles; David Pugh, Adam Hancock.

Seasiders strong in second half revival

Tenby United Athletic 29 - Teirw Crymych 7

Iwan Duffy - two tries on return from injuryTeirw Crymych made a bright start to the Friday night floodlit league match in front of a good crowd at Heywood Lane as they went seven points ahead in the opening stages but Tenby Athletic reduced the deficit to just two points by the end of an absorbing  first half and added four tries in a second half where they stayed the pace better, aided by a very experienced bench which allowed them to take control up front and outstanding half backs Fletcher Broadhurst and Harry Rossiter called the shots.

There was a minute’s silence and sustained applause prior to the start as a mark of respect for late second-team head coach Tim Poole, who recently passed away, with his family in attendance and son Joe playing in the front row for The Seasiders.

Crymych went on the attack early on as halves Deiniol Matthews and Steff Crossman put them on the attack and from their first incursion into the Seasiders’ 22  some real graft by Luke Freebury, Tom Tagg and Iwan James saw hooker Harry Worthing powered over the line, with centre Owain Evans adding the extra points.

Play was fairly even for the rest of the half but Fletcher Brodhurst claimed an unconverted try as reward for his total involvement but the work-rate of their pack provided early signs that they would feature after the oranges and replacement hooker Iwan Duffy announced his return from injury with a brace of tries from his ability to be in the right place at the right time for two close-range tries.

Gwion Jones, also returning from a shoulder injury, rounded off a cracking move where good ball retention and a long Rossiter pass gave him room for manoeuvre and he twisted out of two tackles to show his finishing power is still there.

Then centre Ben Pugh also added a cracking try after good work by skipper Jack Gooding gave an unopposed run to the line and with Rossiter adding two conversions as another replacement in Jesse James vied for man of the match with Joe Poole and Broadhurst – and both teams gave 100% in a match that was worth watching!
