Championship Division:

Otters edged out in final seconds

Narberth 25 - Bargoed 28

Ashley Sutton - Narberth try scorerNarberth looked as if they would claim a hard-fought victory over Bargoed but conceded a try deep into time added on that ultimately cost them a match they had real chances to win.

The Otters made a good start despite a couple of withdrawals from injury  when young centre Ifan Phillips scored a good try and full back Nick Gale converted before Bargoed battled back with a Steff Jones penalty.

Winger David Evans then showed his pace with an unconverted try for the visitors but Jonathan Rogers, on for Gale, who had suffered a head injury, landed a penalty before Bargoed second row David Edwards crossed the whitewash and Jones added the extra points.

Another Jones’ penalty after half time gave Bargoed an 18-10 lead but replacement Ashley Sutton then scored a superb unconverted solo try for Narberth to keep them in contention.

As fortunes ebbed and flowed Jones kicked another Bargoed penalty – but in a dramatic moment home winger Jordan Roberts intercepted and sped towards the line and looked certain to score – but when the move was illegally halted the referee awarded a penalty try and The Otters were 21-18 ahead!

But then came those dramatic late moments, after The Otters had defended well, but then pacy winger David Evans sped over with the home players and supporters expecting a recall for a fumble – and Jones conversion just extended the lead slightly before the official blew for full time!

WRU CUP – Division One:

Group J - Crymych 30 Glynneath 27

Matthew Freebury - scored vital Crymych tryCrymych had to call upon all their commitment and high skill levels to overcome an immense challenge from Glynneath to secure the spoils in a very entertaining game at Parc Lloyd Thomas.

The Preseli Men led 13-10 at the interval with a try from No 8 Trystan Griffiths, converted by full back Adam Phillips, who also landed two penalties.

The second half saw the scores remain very close but tries from second row Matthew Freebury and Adam Phillips were enough to see Crymych through a nail-biting finish.
No scorers were available from Glynneath.

Crymych: Adam Phillips: Ned Bennett; Tomos Lewis; Laurence Headlam; Dafydd Phillips: Ifan Phillips; Huw Rees: Jonathan Clout; Carwyn Rees (Capt); Jonathan Phillips: Rhys Davies; Matthew Freebury: Rhydian Howells; Cai Efans; Trystan Griffiths.  Replacements: Lee Griffiths; Dylan Phillips; Morgan Davies; Gethin Gibby.

Group K - Pembroke 24 Brynamman25

Matthew Lewis - grabbed a Pembroke tryA last-ditch penalty by Andrew Mason gave Brynamman the narrowest of victories at Crickmarren and left Pembroke with the disappointment of defeat after playing so well, especially in the opening quarter, where they had much the better of the play.

But they failed to turn pressure into enough points and were only 14-7 ahead after Lloyd Davies had given them the lead and right on half time Jordan Cornick added a second score, both converted by Harry Fletcher.

Sandwiched in between was a Brynamman try from their danger man Mason which he also converted and in a free-flowing second half the visitors added tries by Osian Evans and Craig Jones, one of them converted by Mason, alongside a penalty.

Pembroke added their third try from a superb break by Aaron Williams which allowed Matthew Price to cross the whitewash and with a successful conversion from Fletcher and a penalty by Fletcher the Scarlets led 24-22 as play went deep into time added on.

But they conceded a penalty and up stepped Mason to find the target and Brynamman made the journey home with a one-point win – and Pembroke were left to reflect on what might have been.

Replacements: Rhys Mainwaring; Evan Phillips; Matthew Price.

Lewis Gibbin dives in for Whitland

Group L - Whitland 13 Ammanford 46

Whitland came up against a very strong Ammanford team at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn and although they played their part in trying to play attacking rugby and scored tries from winger Lewis Gibbin and centre Gino Setaro, plus a penalty by outside half Geraint Jones, they conceded seven tries as visiting outside half Ryan Williams led the way with 11 points from four conversions and a penalty.

The Ammanford tries were claimed by full back Tiaan Evans, winger Mike Rees, skipper and scrum half Alex Davies, prop Dylan Phillips, second row Morgan Plimmer and replacement Carwyn Richards.

It was a heavy defeat for The Borderers but they won’t face many better teams than this in their league encounters and coach Gareth Bennett will have some consolation from performances by some of his younger players.

WRU Cup - Division Two:

Group H - Milford Haven 11 Bridgend Sports 17

Dan Jenkins - try for The MarinersMilford Haven had enough chances to win this game but failed to turn pressure into points with the taking of wrong options and conceding possession at vital times.

There were the usual solid performances in midfield by Dan Jenkins and Dan Birch, supported by skipper Lee Riley and Kyren Gray – and No 10 James Williams had a very good game and landed two penalties.

The Mariners’ only try came from Dan Jenkins and The Sports kept things tight and in the final analysis were good value for victory.

Milford Haven: Kyren Gray: Lee Riley (Capt); Dan Jenkins; Dan Birch; Ieuan Davies:  James Williams; Ethan Bateman:  Tristan Lewis; Luke Ryan; Ben Jenkins: Zac Davies; Jay Goodall:  Ethan Aldred; Ben Groves; Dewi Williams. Replacements: Jimmy Buirds; Dylan Evans; Brandon Cooper; Dean McSparron; Madras Ivanisevic.

Group I - Tenby United v Heol y Cyw – Match called off

*Heol y Cyw were unable to find transport!

Group J - Fishguard & Goodwick 26 Porthcawl 10

Robbie Jones - scored a try for FishguardFishguard & Goodwick utilised their pack power to gain a good win over Porthcawl at The Moors, with three of their four tries coming from controlled drives from close-range line outs, whilst their back division covered well and made sure that the visitors were unable to turn their pressure periods into enough points.

But there were few scoring chances in a very tight first half and it wasn’t until the 37th minute that Porthcawl took the lead with a very good unconverted try from winger Will Maloney as he sidestepped his way over in the clubhouse corner.

There was still time for The Seagulls to level matters at the break when a typical powerhouse break by skipper Chris Shousha allowed Max Jones to support well and put centre Robbie Jones over in the opposite corner.
Fishguard’s pack established superiority in the second half as flanker Romeo Colella and replacement prop Ryan McVeigh were impelled over the line for tries, both converted by James Griffiths after the centre had kicked them into the corner to earn the necessary lineout platforms.

Colella added his second try, again from a lineout drive, before departing to a yellow card and Maloney did grab a second Porthcawl try from another excellent move but with flanker Will Lewis catching the eye and second row Rhys Lewis showing great consistency for a youngster, The Seagulls celebrated a very good win over a useful side.

Fishguard & Goodwick: Kial Keane: Ed Bendall; Robbie Jones; James Griffiths; Rhys Evans: Jake Jenkins; Max Jones: Iwan McVeigh; Liam Wilkes; Adam Bowen: Gwilym Evans; Rhys Lewis:  Will Lewis; Sion Colella; Chris Shousha (Capt). Replacements: Ryan McVeigh; Will Delaney; Gavin Walsh; Richard Hunter; Andrew Williams; Ben Bone; Ed Rathbone.

WRU Cup - Division Three:

Group G - Bryncoch 57 St Davids 11

George Raymond - try scorer for SaintsSt Davids were always under pressure after conceding early points against Bryncoch and trailed 33-6 at half time against a team that for once had The Saints’ pack under pressure, and were never really able to claw their way back, despite there being plenty of effort.

Aaron Foster slotted two penalties in the first half and with 20 minutes to go a typically strong run by George Raymond sent co-centre Ben Joyce in for a try watched by his sister Jasmine and Lisa Butcher.

For Bryncoch, tries came from Josh Evans (2) Josh Kawastya, Richard McNeill and Illtyd Evans (2), who also scored two tries as well as notching six conversions.

The Saints never gave up trying until the final whistle and key players were Tommy Reynolds, George Raymond, Nathan Foster and Dafydd Williams.

St Davids: Harvey Godkin: Rhys Price; Ben Joyce; George Raymond; Morgan Davies: Aaron Foster; Owain Swain: Ryan John; Adam Williams; Carwyn Lewis: Tommy Reynolds; Aled Davies: Kieran Jones; Nathan Foster (Capt); Dafydd Williams. Replacements:  Dan Murphy; Jack Johnston; Gavin Jenkins; Owain Lewis; Zac Morgan.

Group J - Vardre 52 Pembroke Dock Harlequins 22

Gethin Bradney - two tries for The QuinsPembroke Dock Harlequins suffered from a bout of travel sickness as they found themselves already 31-3 in arrears at half time and although they put on a much better show thereafter they were unable to fight their way back into contention.

All they could muster in that lacklustre first half was a penalty from outside half Morgan Rogers but Vardre had already run in tries by No 8 Dylan Hills, winger Richard Martin, two tries from Callum Roach and another from winger Rhys Humphreys. Richard Bateman also landed three conversions.

It says much for the Quins’ resolve that they didn’t collapse entirely after the break as tries came from Gethin Bradney (2) and Kobie Thomas, two of them converted by Rogers, as Hywel Baker, Liam Scourfield and skipper Jack Brown led by example up front.

But Bateman ran through for two tries and converted them, as he did when full back Luke Jones got on the scoresheet.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins: Rhys Bradney: Tom Donovan; Geraint Powell; Adam Jones; Kobie Thomas: Morgan Rogers; Josh Brown: Connor Colmel; Dan McCloud; Hywel Baker: Jack Byrne; Liam Scourfield: Jack Millite; Danny Wilkes; Jack Brown (Capt). Replacements: Jordan Palmer; Harry Owen; Rob Hearne: Tom Wheeler; Kieran Machin:  Ben Hathaway; Gethin Bradney.

Group K - Cwmafan 36 Neyland 20

George Williams - another try for Neyland centreThe match between Cwmafan and Neyland was an entertaining one where both teams came together to run the ball at every opportunity and in the final analysis The All Blacks were still very much in the game as they trailed 24-20 going into the closing stages but conceded two tries from good Cwmafan counter-attacks.

Neyland were 12-10 adrift at half time as they had unconverted tries from centre George Williams and second row Iestyn Evans and after conceding two tries early in the second period fought back with tries from No 10 Oliver Rothero and centre Harrison Grice.

Veteran prop Jack Kinnersley came on as a replacement and played well in anchoring the scrum late on but tries from Rhys Hardy, Louis Page, and Ashley Rossiter (2), alongside a try brace and three conversions from Gavin Williams, were enough to give Cwmafan victory in a game where both teams sang the praises of the match official.

Neyland: Patrick Bellerby: Ben Millward; Alex Codd; George Williams; Henry McBeth: Oliver Rothero; Owen Hamer: Luke Griffiths-Dawes; Alex Swales; Mark James: Iestyn Evans; Harrison Grice; George Evans; Owain Evans; Ben Williams. Replacements: Andrew Slark; Jack Kinnersley; Will Lewis; Stuart Phillips.

Matthew John - controlling the midfield area

Group L - Haverfordwest 29 Amman United 0

Haverfordwest were deserved winners of this match, running in four tries against a very gritty Amman United side who came close to scoring on a number of occasions but took the wrong options or showed indiscipline that cost them possession and territory.

The Blues also spurned excellent chances in a fast first half where Matthew Johns, Jack Clancy and Jake Morgan all made runs but the final pass went astray.

Full back Morgan missed a very kickable penalty after good work by Will Blackburn, Mike Griffiths and skipper Matthew Phillips but was on target after 17 minutes from a similar chance.

And The Blues finally opened their try count after 29 minutes of attacking play when hooker Jon Mason straightened the move up and skipper Phillips sped 25 metres before finding Craig Barnett lurking with intent to cross at the posts and Morgan converted.

Amman had their first chances just before the break as outside half Tom Cadell missed two penalties, one from 55 metres, before Haverfordwest’s scrum superiority showed when they jerked the opposition back from five metres out and Will Blackburn claimed the try that Morgan did well to convert.

It was a similar story after the interval as Scott Candler raced up the touchline but flag man John Summons was as honest as ever to raise his flag and the equally impressive Mason also went close before outstanding player/coach Matthew John sliced through and second row Karl Busch did brilliantly to support him on the outside for Morgan to add the extra points.

In between a few bouts of fisticuffs that saw visiting hooker George Clarke receive a second red card the visitors played some good running rugby but The Blues had the final word when a close-range surge saw Mason credited with the try that Morgan converted to round off a committed team performance.

Haverfordwest: Jake Morgan: Johnny White; Matthew John; Craig Barnett; Scott Candler: Stuart Morris; L Eaton: Dan Berry; Jon Mason; Tom Carrington: Karl Busch; Jack Clancy: Will Blackburn; Matty Phillips (Capt); Ryan Banner. Replacements: Terry Lovell; Jamie Zambas; Steve Thomas; Mike Griffiths; Archie Thomas.

Scott Candler takes a high ball
