Local derby ruined by rank indiscipline

Milford Haven 6 - Haverfordwest 10

(Abandoned midway through the second half)

The eagerly-awaited local derby between Milford haven and Haverfordwest ended in chaos midway through the second half when a brawl featuring a number of players from both camps caused the referee to abandon the game and leave the WRU to decide on how they deal with such indiscipline as The Blues were leading 10-6 at the time.

Matches between these neighbours are always fiercely contested and this one was no exception as there was no scoring in a strongly-contested first quarter before The Blues took the lead with a well-worked try by skipper Jack Evans as he powered over from 10 metres and Adam Phillips added the extra points.

The Mariners opened their account soon afterwards with a penalty by James Trueman, who was playing at scrum half, and who added a second penalty near the interval to reduce Haverfordwest’s lead to a single point.

It was a similar story after the break as both teams had half chances but failed to break the respective defences, with the only score being a penalty by Adam Phillips.

There had been a few niggles but nothing of real nastiness noted by partisan supporters before the violence interrupted and the referee abandoned the game.

He did tell one onlooker after the game, that it had been a  prolonged free for all involving the two sets of players, he had been pushed over in the ensuing melee and hurt his ankle. He added that he did not give up his Saturday afternoons to be treated in that manner, so his decision was to abandon the match.

It is perhaps another wake-up call to clubs to instil self-discipline in their players after a number of recent abandonments and is perhaps why there are fewer match officials for the WRU to call upon in what is after all an amateur game at this level!

Division Two (West):

Borderers well beaten – and their fate is sealed

Whitland 15 - Nantgaredig 66

Shane Rossiter - Two tries for the beseiged BorderersWhitland lost their 14th match in 15 starts in this tough season for the club and find themselves relegated after conceding ten tries against a Nantgaredig side who had beat them 49-34 earlier in the campaign and are likely to finish sixth after only their seventh win from their 15 fixtures.

Nantgaredig started quick as expected and The Borderers gifted them some easy tries with soft defence and a lack of work rate around the breakdown which killed off the home side’s hopes within the first 25 minutes as Nant grabbed four converted tries.

Whitland settled into the game and caused Nant some problems, especially with a dominant scrum, but they couldn’t capitalise with ball in hand and that was the story of the game really as Nant deserved every credit as they were clinical and scored some lovely tries from Osian Knight (3), Iwan Milward (2), Carwyn Davies and Logan Davies (4), with ace kicker Lloyd Williams successfully converting eight of them!

Unfortunately, that result seals Whitland’s fate and sends them down to the third division where they are already making plans to rebuild.

As Gareth Davies told us,
“As head coach I just want to thank the boys for their efforts, especially in the latter part of the season, where we ensured we had a team every week and fulfilled the fixtures, and didn’t shirk anything. As a club, we’re already planning for life in the third division and hope to go well next year with a fresh start - but we face Aberaeron in May for one last run out in Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn.”

Whitland: Shane Rossiter: Lucas Dance; Liam Price; Mike Georgiou; Tom Day: Jamie Thomas; Gareth Davies: Trystan Bowen; Alan Proctor; Ceiron Evans: Ben Taylor; Will Baradell: Osian Thomas; Gavin Smith; Jack Tucker. Replacements: Shane Clarke; Charlie Watson; Aaron Thompson; Aaron Cross;  Tomos Hughes.

Makeshift All Blacks pay the price

Neyland 7 - Llandeilo 73

Ben Williams - grabbed the only try for NeylandNeyland suffered one of their heaviest defeats as they were forced to field a makeshift side against a Llandeilo team which has only lost four times this season, and ran in 11 tries, nine of them converted by Jac Beynon, as the All Blacks were forced to field several players of very limited experience and their squad included two of their junior team coaches who certainly haven’t played for quite a well!

Llandeilo started well with early converted tries  from Ieuan Thomas and Ollie Weed before Neyland responded with a well-worked try by Ben Williams, converted by Rio Phillips, whose father Shane had a good game in the centre, but the floodgates then opened as the visitors added further tries by Jack Javies (2), Henry Jones, John Haynes and a second by Jack Davies, six of them converted to give the visitors a 47-7 interval lead.

Worse was to follow as Neyland winger Josh Morgan caught a stray stud to sustain a cut knee which required internal as well as external stitches and Llandeilo ran in five more tries by Ceri Davies, Jack Davies (two more), Ewan Blakemore and a third for Ieuan Thomas.

It was refreshing to have both camps praising referee Richard Thomas (Carmarthen) for his sensitive controlling of the game – and they meet again in Llandeilo next Saturday, with the All Blacks rightly looking forward to the season’s end because of their unfortunate run of injuries.

Neyland: Liam Rees: Josh Morgan; Shane Phillips; Ollie Rothero; Josh Watts: Owen Hamer; Rio Phillips: Craig Power, Mason Kerrison; Asha Gledhill: George Evans; Lewis Hallett: George Williams (Capt); Ben Williams; Jasper Endean. Replacements: Jack Kinnersley; Gareth Jones; Andrew Slark; Seb Mackintosh; Finn Gale.

Ponty power on as The Quins struggle to field a team

Pontyberem 59  - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 5

Gethin Bradney - opportunist try for Quins wingerPembroke travelled to Pontyberem with just 15 players and although those who played deserve every credit for giving their best the outcome against a team which has won all 15 of its games so far, including a 25-7 victory at Bierspool.

In this return tussle Ponty were already 26-5 ahead at the break from three tries by talented centre Corey Hardy and another by second row Dan Morgans ensured a bonus point, three of them converted by ace kicker Rhodri Lewis as the Quins’ only response was an opportunist try was from winger Gethin Bradney as he twice kicked ahead, regathered and did well to touch down in the corner.

The rate of scoring inevitably increased after the interval as tiredness crept in to Quins’ legs and there were further Ponty scores from  Corey Hardy, Dan Morgans, youth player Gethin Lynch and two from Rhodri Lewis, who also added another four conversions to take his match tally to 24 points.

The Quins at least fulfilled the fixture, with players of the calibre of Harry Owen and skipper Ben Hathaway playing out of position but joining other experienced players like Jack Price, Craig Barnett and Lewys Scourfield trying hard to stem the tide!

Pembroke Dock Harlequins: Gethin Bradney: Rhys Thomas, Harry Owen; Jack Price; Rhys Spencer: Craig Barnett; Ben Hathaway (Capt): Alfie Ball; Jack Hagan; Dai Moseley: Sean John; Liam Baker:  Ben Gibby; Danny Wilkes; Lewys Scourfield. Replacements: None

Bulls beat Llan in entertaining basement battle

Llanybydder 26 - Teirw Crymych 50

Youth player Iago Fussell - excellent debut for The BullsTeirw Crymych completed their first season of National League rugby as they made the journey to Llanybydder and claimed a bonus-point win that earned them the double, having gained a 59-17 win at Parc Lloyd Thomas earlier in the campaign, and a creditable seventh place as their opponents finish bottom but played a full part in an entertaining match where running rugby was very much the order of the day.

Llanybydder picked up a welcome bonus point for scoring four tries by flanker Dafydd Williams, centre Sion Griffiths (2) and prop Kai Evans, three of them converted by scrum half Llion Williams.

For The Bulls, there were good performances for several youth players gaining experience at this level and scrum half Daf Bryan, full back Ifan Wyn Jones, Taran Morgan-Davies and second row Delme Alleyne scored, with prop Iago Fussell also catching the eye. Other tries came from  No 10 Arwel Davies (2), and Sion Evans (2) alongside five conversions from Daf Bryan.

Teirw Crymych (from): Lloyd Hughes; Harri Worthing; Thomas Davies; Iago Fussell; Luke Freebury, Gwion Evans; Iwan James; Griff Lloyd (Capt);  Tom Tagg; Ifan Wyn Jones; Dafydd Bryan; Steff Rees;  Aled Lewis; Delme Alleyne; Taran Morgan-Davies; Sion Evans; Rhys Davies; Iago Fussell.

Seasiders bounce back to winning ways

Laugharne 17 - Tenby United 31

Dan Colley - another try hat-trick for Tenby UnitedArwel Davies - Teirw Crymych man of the match at LlanybydderTenby United bounced back from defeat to complete the double over Laugharne at Wooford Park after beating this opposition by 40-10 on the opening day of the season at Heywood Lane, taking a 21-5 interval lead and remaining in control thereafter, despite a battling display where they added two more tries..

It wasn’t The Seasiders at their best but four converted tries earned them a bonus point to still give them the mathematical chance of snatching promotion if they can beat current leaders Burry Port away and preventing them from gaining any bonus points, claiming maximum points there and two more five-pointers in their other games.

For Laugharne, relegation is the disappointing prospect but they are renowned for their team spirit and will surely bounce back next season!

The Seasiders’ ace try poacher Dan Colley was heavily involved in the back row with Josh Hamer and Dom Colman, and was perfectly-placed to pouch another try hat-trick to his long list, with Jack Brown scoring the other as reward for his front-row efforts alongside lively young hooker Iwan Davies and Jack Davies – and all four were converted alongside a second-half penalty by outside half Lloyd Thomas.

Laugharne never gave up trying and scored tries by Mikey Williams, Rhys Evans and  Carl Smith, one converted by Tyler Reynolds – but Tenby United remained strong despite being reduced to 12 men at one stage!

Tenby United:  Gwion Jones: Jordan Asparassa; Jackson Gravatt; Tom Edmonds; Mathew Lewis:  Lloyd Thomas; Dai Jones: Jack Brown; Iwan Duffy; Jack Davies: Tom Barrass; Alex Jenkins (Capt): Josh Hamer; Dan Colley; Dom Colman. Replacements: Dom Booth; Luke Dedman; Max Brindley; Geraint Jones; Connor Keir; Alfie Pryor.
