Ponty power too much for The Otters

Pontypridd 35 - Narberth 12

Harry Fuller - second try in two matches for NarberthNarberth played well in patches against Pontypridd at their Sardis Road ground but Ponty showed why they are one of the front-runners in the section as they broke open The Otters’ defence on five occasions and after leading early on they never relinquished the lead.

Narberth showed, however, that they are going to be no walk-overs at this high level and after conceding an early try to winger Joe Davies, converted by outside half Jorge Lacey, they fought back with an unconverted try by winger harry Fuller, his second in as many matches.

But Ponty used their forward power as Cai James, Jordan Coxley and skipper Cally James were heavily involved in setting up two tries for second row Joe Miles, both converted by Lucey.

Narberth’s influential skipper Tom Powell grabbed their second try after he had linked with Lewys Gibby, Roy Osborn, Rhys Williams and Will Boyd, with Jon Rogers’ conversion limiting the home side to a 21-12 interval lead.

The Otters had half chances after the break but Ponty managed to keep their line intact before full back dale Stucky forsook his defensive duties and rounded off a good move to claim a bonus try again converted by Lucey.

Pontypridd rounded off the scoring with a try by hooker Connah Hughes as reward for his involvement all afternoon, this time converted by replacement Jaydan Pugh – and now The Otters face another tough tussle next Saturday as they entertain Cross Keys, who will be boosted by their narrow 25-24 win against Brecon after losing their opening game at Ystrad Rhondda, also by a single point!

Bonymaen use the wind to good effect

Crymych 17 - Bonymaen 38

Llyr Davies - scored a try as reward for his overall playBonymaen used their greater experience and forward power to good effect at Parc Lloyd Thomas as they enjoyed first use of the wind and established a 26-5 interval lead before Crymych fought back after the interval but were never able to gain enough quality possession to catch up – although they did match the opposition as old war horses like Carwyn Phillips and Rhys ‘Beaky’ Davies came on to play well.

The Preseli Men also had Bowyn Clarke playing in the fly half role and he played well alongside skipper Dafydd Phillips, Llyr Davies, hooker Sion Wilson and second row Llyr Davies, who scored Crymych’s first-half try.

Carwyn Phillips got his name on the scoresheet in the second half and The Preseli Men were also awarded a late penalty try for an infringement when they looked likely to cross from close range.

For Bonymaen, there were tries from full back Max Van Den Heaver, second row Shaun Sturgess, No 8 and captain Jack Glover, centre Kieran Williams, winger Liam Brooks and full back Jacob Abbtt, who also slotted four conversions.

Division Two (West):

Aberaeron too slick for The Seagulls

Fishguard & Goodwick 15 - Aberaeron 31

Rhodri Jenkins - points aplenty for Aberaeron centreWill Delaney - battled hard and scored a try for FishguardAfter promotion last season, Aberaeron showed they will be a strong team in Division Two (West) as they faced their first challenge with style as their forwards battled hard against a resolute Fishguard & Goodwick side which matched them up front but were outpaced by the pace and guile of the Aber backs as Stef Rees led them well and Rhodri Jenkins and co posed a real threat whenever they had the ball in hand.

Yet it was The Seagulls who took the lead with a try into the strong wind as Mark Jones kicked them into the left-hand corner and prop Will Delaney claimed the try before Jones rapped the post with the difficult conversion.

Then Fishguard lost a key player in Sion Colella with an arm injury as he was playing well alongside Jac Delaney and new skipper Rhys Lewis – and gradually the pendulum switched in favour of Aber, who opened with a penalty by left-footed points machine Rhodri Jenkins, who then  sped through for a try after winger Matthew Harries had claimed their first try and  others were scored by Rhodri Jenkins, Steff Rees and Dyfrig Davies, with Rhodri Jenkins landing more points on the way.

The Seagulls did manage further tries by flanker Jac Delaney and hooker Liam Wilkes but on the day, it was Aberaeron who started their season in style with a convincing bonus-point away win!

Fishguard & Goodwick: Dylan James: Dom Sinnott; Dan Cleary; Kial Keane; Rhys Evans: Mark Jones; Dan Evans: Will Delaney; Liam Wilkes; Ryan McVeigh: Griff Williams; Bryn Thomas: Sion Colella; Jac Delaney; Rhys Lewis (Capt). James Trueman and Zac Davies - scored all the points between them for Milford

Division Three (West):

Davies grabs try double as Mariners maintain derby dominance

Neyland 13 - Milford Haven 26

Second row Zac Davies and winger James Trueman were the heroes as Milford Haven continued their hold over rivals Neyland by winning an intense affair at the Athletic Ground, writes Fraser Watson.

In a game that yielded 31 penalties, 17 of them to the home side, and five yellow cards it was two opportunist tries from Davies and the boot of Trueman, worth 16 points to the Mariners, that ultimately proved decisive.

Visitors weather early Black storm

For 25 minutes, a first competitive win in this fixture for the hosts in over 20 years looked on the cards as Steve Hamer's side dominated the early stages. Six times No 10 Rio Phillips kicked penalties to the corner only for the subsequent attack to come to nothing, with Milford also surviving two scrums on their own line and lock Iestyn Evans bundled into touch near the corner flag.

Amid the pressure, opposing flankers Owain Evans and Ieuan Davies were both sin-binned after a flare up before, finally, Neyland pressure told when quick hands in attack saw skipper George Williams put Ollie Rothero over in the corner.

The lead lasted a mere few minutes though. Milford's lineout was disjointed in the first 40 minutes but after Neyland stole one against the throw in their own 22, scrum half Owen Hamer saw his clearance kick charged down with Davies pouncing on the loose ball for a try that Trueman converted.

Before the break Phillips struck back with a penalty after Milford prop Aaron Mayne also saw yellow, but an 8-7 lead at half time was scant reward for a half Neyland largely dominated.

Milford forwards turn the tide

The second half was a different story as the Mariners managed to control possession and make inroads through their pack playing off half backs Dan McClelland and Jonathan Thomas. Indeed, after a burst from player-coach Zac France-Miller it was Thomas whose chip ahead was fielded by Rothero - only for the full back to make a hash of his clearance, slicing the ball across the try line for Davies to dive on and score.

Trueman converted and then added two penalties to open up a 20-8 lead, the second of which, after another skirmish, saw home No.6 Josh Hamer and away hooker Luke Ryan given 10 minutes each.
Neyland restored hope when hooker Alex Swales charged over out wide but Trueman added three further points to reopen a two-score lead. And after winger Owyn Griffiths went close and McClelland had a try dubiously ruled out, it was the winger who landed a fourth penalty at the death to continue Milford's derby dominance.

"We couldn't quite get in the game in the first half and they performed well," said Milford backs-coach and No 10 Thomas afterwards. "But our forwards then stepped it up and carried hard. We got over the gain line and controlled it from there."

Neyland head coach Steve Hamer was understandably disappointed, saying: "It was a game of two halves. We were dominant in the first half, but second half it changed. They scored a soft try from our point of view, got their tails up and finished the game strong to be fair to them."

Man of the match: Zac Davies
A try double to go down in Milford folklore or the easiest brace a second row will ever score? Zac Davies won't care, and nor should he. But he's not just given the nod for being on the scoresheet - he was crucial in the second half in winning lineout ball for his side after the first-half issues. It helped provide the platform for the Mariners to get in the ascendancy.

Neyland: Ollie Rothero, Henry McBeth, Fletcher Picton, George Williams, Alex Codd, Rio Phillips, Owen Hamer, Ben James, Alex Swales, Seb Mackintosh, George Evans, Iestyn, Evans, Josh Hamer, Owain Evans, Ben Williams. Replacements: Andrew Slark, Tal Tamilia, Dan Hart, Shane Phillips, Josh Watts.

Milford Haven: James Williams, James Trueman, Robbie Jones, Dan Jenkins, Owyn Griffiths, Jonathan Thomas, Dan McClelland, Zac France-Miller, Luke Ryan, Aaton Mayne, Zac Davies, Jay Goodall, Jordan Palmer, Ieuan Davies, Scott Buirds. Replacements: Dylan Evans, Jordan Davies, Ethan Aldred, Aaron Cookson, Rhys Nicholas.

Seasiders Seconds make a great start at Pill Parks

Llangwm welcomed new players in James Wade and Luke Sandell, with ex-youth player Kieran Sinclair catching the eye alongside George James and Dylan Philpott, and the young prop grabbed The Wasps only try in the second half, converted by George James, who ha d also landed an earlier penalty.

The Seasiders gave a chance to fringe players to prove themselves before the club settles on its regular squads for two sides now playing competitive rugby and their tries came from Liam Pugh, Max Brindley, Iorri Richards, Darcy Langston; Jake Henson, Fletcher Broadhurst, Iwan Duffy and Jackson Gravatt, with five of them converted by skipper Harry Rossiter.

Sherratt and Eynon shine as sharp Scarlets win local derby

Pembroke 27 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 17

Jared Sheratt - controlled play and kicked superbly for PembrokeAfter their fantastic start to the season Pembroke Dock Harlequins were brought back down to earth with a bump as they made the short journey ‘up the hill’ to Pembroke and had could have few complaints about defeat at Crickmarren as the home side looked stronger up front and sharper behind the scrum as No 10 Jared Sherratt not only controlled play with his laser-accurate positional kicking but also accumulated 12 points, including touchline conversions.

For The Quins there wasn’t the same sparkle as the previous week although did match their hosts in terms of tries scored – and they were certainly still in contention at half time as they trailed 13-12 as they opened their account with a try by second row Liam Baker and a cracker of a score by outside Morgan Rogers from a sweeping move, converted by skipper Ben Hathaway.

But The Scarlets, for whom Rhydian Eynon was chosen as man of the match for his outstanding support play in the back row alongside Andrew Evans and 18-year-old Zac Shaw, had responded with a good touchline try from young winger Tobi Pratt which Jared Sheratt somehow converted, into the elements, alongside two penalties.

James Allen again caught the eye in the centre and he added an interception try for Pembroke after experienced full back Lewis Davies had added their second try, both of which were converted by Sherratt.
The Quins did have the final word as star centre Jack Price grabbed an unconverted try but it was too little, too late so Pembroke hold the area bragging rights until they meet again later in the campaign!
