Borderers beaten by bustling Foel

Whitland 15 - Felinfoel 32

Whitland went down to their seventh defeat in nine starts this season as they battled hard against Felinfoel but eventually missed out on a losing point which they would have deserved for the considerable effort they put into the game – but missed out on a couple of clear-cut chances through over-eagerness or the taking of wrong options.

Up front there was no shortage of effort from the back row of Calum Evans, Jack Roberts and Jack Mason alongside skipper Benji Kirk and Chris Marks as halves Ianto Davies and Johnny Thomas and they had good tries by centre Gino Setaro and full back Harry Fuller as they tried hard to spread play wide, with Fuller converting one and Thomas landing a penalty.

Scarlets pounded by powerful Llangennech

Llangennech 106 - Pembroke 10

Lloyd Davies - tried to lead Pembroke by examplePembroke showed their battling spirit as they managed to field a squad of 17 players as they travelled to Llangennech by cars but found a talented home squad who were in no mode to give the struggling Scarlets any sympathy as they showed their superiority in establishing a 59-0 interval lead and ending up with a massive 16 try count.

A plus sign for The Scarlets was the play of centre Luke Alderwick as he slotted a penalty and then added a further seven points as he intercepted a floated pass almost on his own line and sped the full length of the pitch before getting his breath back and adding the extra points as he caught the eye alongside skipper Lloyd Davies, Tom Cabot and Tommy Jones.

But they lost full back Matthew Lewis and Rhys Mainwaring was brought on and Rhodri Walters switched to centre from the back row as the three quarters were realigned, whilst veteran prop Johnny Palmer also had to leave the field and was replaced another experienced player in Jamie Brayford.

For the record, Llan skipper Shaun Edwards opened their account in the seventh minute and there were four tries for No 8 Jordan Saunders and a brace each for scrum half Tom Morgan and Luke Davies, who completed a personal tally of 36 points with 13 conversions.

Others came at regular intervals from Lee Davies, Joe Williams, Tom Barnes, Louis Davies, Michael Wood, Steff Marshall and Thomas Davies.

These are trying times for Pembroke coach Geraint Lewis and his depleted squad but they deserve every credit for keeping the Scarlets’ flag flying in adversity – and better times will come in the future!

Pembroke: Matthew Lewis: Steve Brown; Luke Alderwick; Barry Alderman-John; Dylan Evans: Tom Lewis; Jarred Sharrat: Lloyd Davies (Capt); Tommy John; Johnny Palmer: Will Edwards; Leon Stewart: Andrew Evans; Rhodri Walters; Tom Cabot. Replacements: Rhys Mainwaring; Jamie Brayford.

Division Two (West):

Seagulls stumble in opening half

Mumbles 34 - Fishguard & Goodwick 12

Liam Wilkes - hard work for Fishguard rewarded with a tryFishguard travelled to Mumbles with a relatively inexperienced team and paid the price as they took time to settle and the home side used their greater experience to grab three tries in the first half from their pack power, one converted by winger Luke Morgan on a pitch at Swansea Uplands because the home field was unfit for play.

They opened their account in the 10th minute when a kick to the corner and controlled line out drive allowed hooker Gareth Bennett to claim the touch-down.

Then flanker Chris Irons added a second after 24 minutes in almost identical fashion before a period of sustained pressure up front saw the ball switched quickly and full back Andrew Evans forced his way through for a converted try.

The Seagulls did gain a foothold in Mumbles 25 a few times as Osian Rowe, Rhys Lewis, Iwan McVeigh and skipper Chris Shousha battled hard alongside James Griffiths, playing at flanker instead of No 10 or centre, but they were unable to claim any points so they trailed 0-17 at half time.

There were Fishguard tries in the better second period from busy hooker Liam Wilks and pacy winger Ned Bennett, one converted by Jake Jenkins but Mumbles responded with tries from Richard Evans, Sam Cook and Trevor Hughes alongside a third conversion by Morgan.

It left the home side as worthy winners but at least gave some valuable experience to some of the Seagulls’ developing players in the process.

Fishguard & Goodwick: Dan Cleary: Dylan Scott; Robbie Jones; Jake Jenkins; Ned Bennett: Creegan Foot; Ioan Hawkridge-Jones: Will Delaney; Liam Wilkes; Iwan McVeigh: Osian Rowe; Rhys Lewis: Cai Llewelyn; James Griffiths; Chris Shousha (Capt). Replacements: Ryan Foot; Ed Rathbone; Max Jones; Osian Lewis.

Seasiders bounce back with bonus-point victory

Tenby United 27 - Tycroes 0

Gwion James - rounded off the scoring for Tenby UnitedEthan Morgan - opened the scoring for Tenby UnitedTenby United battled back from the disappointment of defeat against top of the table Pontarddulais the previous week with this bonus point victory over seventh place Tycroes but coach Jonathan Evans will be equally as pleased with the fact that as well as claiming five tries they also kept their discipline and recorded a clean sheet in defence.

The Seasiders took the lead after 16 minutes from a clever kick to the corner and a well-orchestrated lineout drive over the line which saw prop Ethan Morgan emerge with the ball – and they repeated the process soon afterwards in the opposite corner, and on this occasion it was flanker Dan Colley who scored as reward for his efforts alongside a hard-working front five, Jordan Evans and Jack Broadhurst.

Then The Tenby backs decided it was time to show their paces and play was spread wide from a scrum near half way via Cam Broadhurst, Lloyd Thomas, Max Brindley and Yannic Parker –with full back Luke Hartland on hand to apply the finishing touches.

The Seasiders remained on top after the oranges as young prop George Rossiter did well alongside Dan Allen, Tom Barrass and skipper Luke Dedman – and from a scrum surge it was No 8 Jack Broadhurst who scored a try converted by No 10 Lloyd Thomas.

And Tenby reserved their best score for their final try where the pack again secured quality possession and when play was swung wide winger Gwion Jones showed his pace as he cut through for try No five!

Tenby United: Luke Hartland: Jordan Asparassa; Max Brinkley; Yannic Parker; Gwinnett Jones: Lloyd Thomas; Cam Broadhurst: George Rossiter; Dan Allen; Ethan Morgan: Tom Barrass; Luke Dedman (Capt): Jordan Evans; Dan Colley; Jack Broadhurst. Replacements: Frankie Boyd; Jake Roberts; Jimmy Davies; Will Swales; Jack Gooding.

Mariners battle hard without success

Carmarthen Athletic 15 - Milford Haven 0

Milford Haven remain in the table’s bottom two as a result of this sixth league defeat in eight matches against Carmarthen Athletic.

The home tries were scored by Gareth Isaacs, Thomas Morgan and Steffan Jones as Jimmy Buirds, Ben Jenkins, Zac France-Miller, Ben Groves and Dan McClelland caught the eye at times but other than the squad selection below there were no further details forthcoming from The Mariners.

Milford Haven: Lee Riley (Capt): James Trueman; Dan Jenkins; Dan Birch; Ieuan Davies: James Williams; Dan McClelland: Jimmy Buirds; Luke Ryan; Ben Jenkins: Zac Davies; Jay Goodall: Ben Groves; Dylan Evans; Zac France-Miller, Replacements: Sam Phillips; Ethan Alder; Nathan Williams; Dean McSparron; Steve Martin.

George grabs great hat-trick in All Blacks’ success

Llanybydder 22 -  Neyland 45

Adam Peel - first try for new Neyland centreGeorge Williams - try hat-trick for Neyland centreNeyland were eager to maintain their recent good form as they travelled to Llanybydder on the back of some good form and a second-half hat-trick by centre George Williams helped them come home with a bonus-point success.

But they were knocked out of their stride for the opening quarter as the host club were unable to field a recognised front row and so there were uncontested scrums; which somewhat disjointed the All Blacks’ battle plan.

And Neyland conceded seven points in that time as Llanybydder opened their account with a try from flanker Dylan Davies, which Llyr Tobias converted - but The All Blacks raised the tempo to draw level with another cracking try from prop Luke Griffiths-Dawes as reward for his immense support play and ability to be in the right place at the right time before No 10 Ollie Rothero slotted the conversion.

Then Rothero was involved again with a second conversion as talented new centre Adam Peel ploughed over from five metres after good work by the Neyland pack - and after the homesters had reduced the deficit with a penalty by Tobias they showed their ability to attack from deeper positions with a sweeping move that ended with winger Matty Coles crossing the whitewash for an unconverted try.

And Neyland finished off the first half with a fourth try to earn a bonus point when Patrick Bellerby raced clear with a typically incisive break but was hauled down five metres out - but did really well to pop the pass up to prop Griffiths-Dawes to score another excellent support try which Rothero converted.

To be fair to Llanybydder they never gave up and were rewarded after the break with a second try from Davies and Tobias, who also added a conversion.

But Neyland always held the edge and outstanding centre George Williams showed his canny knack of being in the right place at the right time, as he claimed a hat-trick, the first two from 35 minutes out and the third from broken play, with two of the conversions from George Evans.

Neyland: Patrick Bellerby: Jake Griffiths; George Williams; Adam Peel; Matty Coles: Ollie Rothero; Owen Hamer: Luke Griffiths-Dawes; Alex Swales; Jack Harries: Dan Hart; Iestyn Evans: George Evans, Owain Evans; Ben Williams. Replacements: Craig Power; Simon Phillips;  Jasper Endean; Stu Phillips; Alex Codd.

Saints prove their point with a Blues’ double

St Clears 22 - Haverfordwest 5

St Clears completed a deserved double over Haverfordwest to stay top of the table as The Blues’ much-vaunted pack was unable its usual influence against a well-organised and disciplined display from the Saints’ eight as they established a 12-5 interval lead despite having to defend the elements, and were always on top with the wind at their backs after that but just missing out on a bonus point.

Prop Gareth Jones opened the Saints’ scoring with a short-range try and talented centre Jac Howells maintained his good form with another score, with Dan Griffiths landing one conversion.

At the other end player/coach Matthew John and skipper Matty Phillips tried to make an impression but the home defence was outstanding and all they could muster was a try by Phillips which Jake Morgan put just the wrong side of the upright.

In another tight tussle after the interval a Griffiths’ penalty nudged The Saints further ahead and he also converted a good try from Liam Rogers to help The Saints show what a very good all-round squad they currently have!

Laugharne too strong for Pembrokeshire Saints

Laugharne 28 - St Davids 0

Rhys Price - caught the eye for St DavidsLaugharne confirmed their right to top-four status as they managed to restrict St Davids’ forward power so that they kept a clean sheet – and at the other end grabbed four tries to secure a bonus point into the bargain on a heavy pitch.

Most of the hard work was already completed for Laugharne by half time as they had the better of the elements and also the scoring as they ran in tries by Owain Thomas, Tom Jameson and Jack Flanagan, all converted by James Stephenson, alongside another seven points as The Saints conceded a penalty try for persistent offending near their own line.

Rhys Price tried hard to lead St Davids to a second-half come-back but as conditions worsened so play became something of a dog-fight and neither side scored any points despite a lot of effort that was negated by a greasy ball and tricky conditions underfoot!

Wasps wilt against Lampeter skills

Llangwm 0 - Lampeter 87

Dave Reynolds - tireless worker for LlangwmLlangwm’s disappointing season continued at Pill Parks as they entertained a Lampeter side with their eyes firmly on winning the section and currently four points behind St Clears with a game in hand.

From the outset it was evident that the visitors had pace to burn wide out and after quenching the early Wasps’ fire there was a four-try haul apiece for wingers Iestyn Evans and Jack Williams in their 13-try romp, with others claimed by flanker Ceri Thomas, prop Ryan Ketachandra, centre Thomas Jones, hooker John Heath and replacement Osian Jones, who also added three conversions after full back Rhys Douglas had earlier been on target with eight successful kicks.

Llangwm never gave up battling away, though, with Ieuan Power, Dave Reynolds, James Lewis working hard up front alongside centre Yale Grice and full back James Brock in defence.

Llangwm (Squad): Ieuan Power; Phil Llewelyn; Callum Jenkins; Dave Reynolds; Josh Young: Ian Mock; Ian Griffiths; James Lewis; Owain Jones; Steve Rees; Bradley James; Luke Dyer; Yale Grice; James Brock; Jack Roberts; Ollie Garson; Dan Ridge; Daniel Morgan.
