Seagulls fight back to beat The Blues

Fishguard & Goodwick started off their campaign with a bonus point bang in their local derby with Haverfordwest, who made a bright start at The Mors as they opened up a 14-point lead in as many minutes but basic errors and a failure to utilise the breeze until the interval saw The Seagulls not only catch up but prevent The Blues from even the consolation of a bonus point, writes Bill Carne.
 
Leading the way for The Seagulls was their inspirational vice-captain Sion Colella, who not only grabbed a try hat-trick but was heavily involved with No 8 Jac Delaney, skipper Liam Wilkes and Will Delaney as their whole pack tackled like demons and centre Karl Keane showed them how to kick for territorial gain, Dan Evans and Ed Rathbone ran well out of defence and winger Mark Jones had a phenomenal 100% day with the boot in awful conditions as he landed all four conversions and two penalties.
 

Blues start well – but Seagulls battle back

 
Yet it was Haverfordwest who made a bright start as a lovely cut-out pass by No 10 Ifan Williams sent winer Will Candler over for a try and then skipper Liam Eaton scored a corker of a try after flanker Ioan Hawkridge-Jones fielded a goal-line drop-out and his perfectly-timed pass allowed Eaton to slice through from the 22, including a dummy that took him to the posts – both tries converted by Ifan Williams.
 
But other periods of territorial pressure failed to produce points and The Seagulls opened their account after 21 minutes when the efforts of Will Delaney, Osian Rowe, Oscar Lawrence. paid off as powerful prop Adam Bowen rounded off a move as he crashed over from two metres out, Jones adding the extras.
 
Ifan Williams claimed three points from a 35-metre penalty but a Dan Evans’ run and a soft penalty allowed the omni-present Colella to take a quick tap and go to the corner, Jones again converting.
 

The Blues stay ahead at the interval but Fishguard fight back well

 
Ifan Williams finished off the first-half scoring with a monster penalty from 47 metres but The Blues’ fans were anxious about only a six-point interval lead and they were right because Fishguard grabbed the lead when Jac Deleney’s charge into the 22 caused chaos and Colella was on hand to speed to the line for Jones to land the extras.
 
The home side increased their lead when a penalty to the corner allowed Colella to lead the drive to the line, after a number of The Seagulls’ bench also played well, and Jones continued his kicking form with a perfectly-judged penalty.
 

A battle to the end but The Seagulls fly high at The Moors

 
Haverfordwest responded well as Rio Phillips kicked low to the right corner and some excellent handling by the forwards allowed saw play swing back right and Ifan Williams darted over for a deserved try.
 
At that stage, it seemed as if they might at least pouch a point for their part in an excellent contest which was well refereed by James Jones (Bridgend), but Mark Jones had the final word as he pumped over another penalty to round off the scoring for a great season’s start by Fishguard & Goodwick, but leaving Haverfordwest pointless and obviously disappointed.

Otters maintain their winning start

 
 

Llanelli Wanderers 10 - Narberth 33

 
 
Narberth continued their excellent start to the season as they travelled to Llanelli Wanderers and came away with an emphatic win that confirmed new coach Lloyd Phillips has already exerted an influence on The Otters as they established a 19-3 interval lead and were on top throughout as their pack had the upper hand and backs, with halves Lewys Gibby and Jonathan Rogers controlling matters.
 
A measure of their superiority can be gauged by the fact that they restricted the Wanderers to just a penalty by former Narberth star Nick Gale in the first period and only conceded a solitary try late on when Owen Davies scored and Gale kicked the conversion.
 
The Otters opened their account with a try apiece from full back Ashley Sutton, as he rounded off a good backs’ move, and Lewis Gibby, the second from a kick ahead, converted by Jonathan Rogers, before Gale notched his three-pointer - but The Otters maintained their superiority up front as Iestyn Wood caught the eye alongside Tom Powell, Kieran Harries and Max Rodda Lodder – and centre Harrison Burke rounded off a period of pressure to score their third try, again converted by Rogers.
 
Gibby maintained his superb start to the new campaign by adding a typically robust support try which Rogers goaled and then Sutton followed suit from another excellent backs move as reward for his stout defence and excellent support play, with Rogers adding the extra points to round off Narberth’s scoring and ensure an excellent result which bodes well for the season.

Saints start with bonus-point win over The Wasps

St Davids 26 - Llangwm 7

A hat-trick of tries from skipper George Raymond helped St Davids earn a bonus point win over Llangwm in a game defined by inclement conditions, writes Fraser Watson.
 
Having been switched from his usual No.8 berth to the centre, Raymond touched down in the first-half to give his side the lead and although Dylan Philpott responded with a try for Llangwm, he went over twice more after the interval while Owain Swain also scored as the hosts managed the conditions better than their opponents.
 
Yet it was the Wasps who kicked-off with strong wind and rain behind them and threatened when Ollie Hughes broke clear in midfield and fed George James - only for the full-back to be bundled into touch as he headed for the corner.

Early on, both sides struggled to secure clean line-out ball in the conditions but after 24 minutes, it was from this platform that the hosts struck. Dom Sinnott came into the line and made a burst into the Llangwm 22, and Ethan Griffiths was then stopped just short before the ball went to Raymond who barged over from close range.
 
Bob Froy converted but it was the visitors who then finished the half in the ascendancy, and despite Euan Macdonald hooking a penalty attempt wide from 30 metres out they levelled when forwards James Wade and Joe Newton combined to send No.9 Philpott under the posts. Macdonald added the extras and at half-time, the game was in the balance.
 

Saints use the conditions well

 
But with the conditions in their favour, the Saints were back ahead soon after the interval and again, it was Raymond who burst through a couple of tackles from 10 metres out to score. The home pack also had the superior scrum and it was from one shunt near the line that St Davids got a third try, scrum-half Swain picking up and sniping over with Froy converting for the third time.
 
To Llangwm's credit, they kept pushing and another break from centre Hughes set-up some sustained pressure but St Davids held out, before sealing the win 10 minutes from time. A concerted forward drive took them close to the line before Raymond once again took a short pop-pass and crashed over for a five-pointer and late on, Ben Joyce almost added a fifth try with an interception in midfield but knocked on at the crucial moment.
 
Afterwards, home coach Bruce Evans told Pembrokeshire Sport: "A much improved Llangwm team showed glimpses of what they might achieve this season, but, although I felt we played within ourselves, we still managed a bonus point win.
 
"We still have plenty of work to do but it's a good start to the league season."

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 37 - Pembroke 28

 
 
 
Pembroke Dock Harlequins beat near-neighbours Pembroke at Bierspool in their early-season derby but the game was marred by the fact that the home club were reduced to 14 players with the score at 3-3 and Pembroke played the rest of the game with 13 players as two of their players also received red cards in an unseemly scuffle.
 
Bowyn Clark had given The Scarlets an early lead which was cancelled out by Quins’ Ben Hathaway before mayhem broke out but with a player advantage The Quins established a 13-3 lead thanks to unconverted tries by winger Sam James, after good work by Gethin Bradney, and then Lewis Scourfield from close range
 
Early in the second half Dan James grabbed an unconverted try for The Scarlets before The Quins pouched another ten points with tries from Morgan Rogers and Ben Gibby as their back row of Danny Wilkes, Callum Jones and new skipper Harry Owen caught the eye.
 
Pembroke showed their tenacity, however, as skipper Lloyd Davies and his namesake Dan reduced the deficit but in a late scramble for points, and with another try coming for The Scarlets from Josh Greenwood – but the ever-alert Rogers grabbed his second score for The home side after Bradney and James had created the chance and the scrum half pounced, with Hathaway adding his second conversion.
 
The Scarlets had the final word as flanker Rhydian Eynon pounced as reward for his all-action play and The Scarlets claimed a bonus point – but the missed conversion denied them a second point as The Quins pocketed a maximum five points!

Tenby United Athletic defended the elements well in the first half as their pack did well to keep play tight, with Joe Poole, Ryan Bolton, Ewan Duffy and especially Lewis Rossiter to the forefront, and with Archie Treadaway Williams. Will James and Jackson Gravatt defending well wide out.
 
Just three points adrift at the interval, The Seasiders’ Seconds used the elements better after the break as Cam Broadhurst and Harri Rossiter tried hard to keep their pack moving forward - and live-wire back-rower Iorri Richards claimed the all-important try which Harri Rossiter converted alongside two long-range penalties to seal a hard-fought success.
