Scott Newton threatens early on

Featured Match – Division One (West):

Borderers beaten by 100% Llangennech

Whitland 7 - Llangennech 43

Llangennech showed why they have a 100% record with the attacking play for which they are well known at Park Llwyn Ty Gwyn and although Whitland battled hard throughout they were often on the back foot against a team known for a strong, ball-winning pack and pacy backs.

The key period came in the first half, starting in the 27th minute as The Borderers were trailing by five points but conceded three tries in the next five minutes as they fell off vital tackles, and went on to trail 33-0 at the interval.

Yet The Borderers had made a promising start as skipper Scott Newton made a half-break in front of the stand and 17 year old Harry Fuller showed what a prospect he is with some nice defensive touches – but Llangennech served notice of intent from a close-range catch and drive for Jordan Price to dive over after The Borderers had conceded a turnover on half way to set the platform.

Raff Williams hauled down short

21 points conceded in five minutes

And that’s the way things stayed until those fatal five minutes when Llangennech punished some ineffective tackling with tries from scrum half Gareth George, flanker Gregg George and centre Tom Rees, all converted by fly half Callum Harries.

There was still time for the visitors to add a fifth try before half time when replacement centre Rhys Davies scored and Harries added the extras to inflict a disappointing half-time score on The Borderers.

To be fair to Whitland they refused to give up and teenager Fuller almost grabbed the try of the match as he shrugged off a tackle in his own half, swayed past two would-be tacklers and was finally hauled down by a desperate cover tackle.

Another promising performance came from James Thomas, who won his share of lineout ball under pressure from bigger opposition and after good work by No 9 Josh Thomas, Rhys Schiavone and Geraint Jones a clever diagonal chip through by Nico Setaro allowed Newton to score a deserved try which Setaro converted.

Llangennech kept control up front, however, and John Neale scored a try and from a flowing move Luke Davies claimed their seventh try to set the seal on a deserved away win – but Borderers;’ coach Gareth Bennett can take some comfort from the performances of his squad as they gain greater experience at this level!

George inspires Otters

Glamorgan Wanderers 17 - Narberth 50

Rhys Williams - played well for NarberthNarberth travelled to The Memorial Ground in Ely, Cardiff, with 12 players unavailable but they played really well to score 50 points and be well in charge after scoring 31 points in the first period and always in control thereafter.

But canny coach Sean Gale played Jonathan George (Felinfoel) and Geraint Llewelyn (Carmarthen Quins) on permit at 10 and 15 respectively and both played really well, with George contributing half the points and Llewelyn looking strong in defence and attack.

He also included young players like Rhys Williams, George McDonald, Josh Hamer, Josh Davies and Tom Clarke and all played a significant part, whilst Ifan James had to play out of position at tight-head prop and was man of the match.

Jonathan George served notice of his intent with The Otters’ opening try which he also converted, as he did with other scores from skipper Richard Rees, Rhys Williams and Josh Davies – as well as landing a penalty.

The Wanderers did manage three tries from winger Jamie Murray (2) and outside half Gruff Tough, who also added a conversion but the home side never looked likely to make a strong comeback.

Veteran hooker Dan Smith, pulled in for replacement prop duties, nicely rounded off a catch and drive move which George converted before prop Bradley Davies ploughed through for an unconverted try and George McDonald rounded off another classy performance in the No 9 jersey which George goaled to round off an excellent individual effort alongside a great team effort by The Otters.

Narberth: Geraint Llywelyn: Josh Davies; Jordan Roberts; Joe Hutchings; Lewys Gibby: Jonathan George; George McDonald: Ifan James; Rhodri Owens; Lewis Davies: Rhys Williams; Alex Jenkins: Tom Curry; Tom Powell; Richard Rees (Capt). Rhys celebrates magic 300 in big win for the Preseli Men

Crymych 40 - Gowerton 12

Rhys Richards - played well in his 300th gameCrymych celebrated powerful prop Rhys Richards’ 300th appearance with a resounding win over Gowerton and as usual the veteran forward played with total commitment, was solid as a rock in the scrums and was totally involved in what was a bonus-point success for The Preseli Men.

In an action-packed first period they also pouched a bonus point for scoring four tries, although Gowerton played their part with tries from second row Jac Soloman and winger Luke Jones, one converted by Lewis Wyatt.

Opening the home side’s account was No 10 Gavin Thomas, who touched down under the posts after a well-directed move and full back Adam Phillips converted, as he did when winger Tomos Lewis touched down in the corner; then the full back also crossed the whitewash himself and Tomos Lewis claimed his second score to make it 28-12 at half time.

Crymych maintained control for the rest of the match as they defended well when they had to and added two more tries, the first scored by centre Gethin Gibby and Phillips’ conversion went over after rapping both posts and then falling onto the crossbar and then over for a hard-earned two points!

The final score fell to replacement Rhydian Howells and for once Phillips missed the conversion but it was a fine all-round performance by the Preseli Men – and a fitting tribute to Rhys Richards’ dedication to the club’s cause!

Crymych: Adam Phillips: Eilir George; Tomos Phillips; Gethin Gibby; Tomos Lewis: Gavin Thomas; Dafydd Phillips: Rhys Richards; Carwyn Rees; Jonathan Phillips: Llyr Davies; Rhys Davies: Osian Davies; Dafydd Gibby; Carwyn Phillips (Capt). Replacements: Aled Hughes; Tomos Davies; Rhydian Howells; Huw Rees; Ifan Davies.

Division Two (West):

Seasiders struggle in first half but never gave up trying

Loughor 31 - Tenby United 12

Dan Colley - two tries as a flanker for Tenby UnitedTenby United travelled to Loughor with something of a makeshift side that was already 19 points adrift at the break but they kept plugging way with arguably the youngest squad fielded by The Seasiders for many years –with no fewer than 12 players from their youth team of two years ago which reached the WRU Bowl Final, and with centre Dan Colley playing in the back row, Matthew Morgan playing at No 10 instead of scrum half or wing – and skipper Rob Luly leading the side from second row instead of his normal slot as prop.

But they all acquitted themselves well and Colley showed his skills with a terrific display which saw him as a man of the match candidate as he also grabbed The Seasiders’ scores as reward for his support play.

Loughor opened their account with a well-worked try by hooker Emil Pruzicki followed by others from winger James Beech and flanker Evan Budge, two of them converted by outside half Dan Williams.

The Seasiders had their chances in that opening 40 minutes as brothers Jack and Cam Broadhurst again caught the eye at Nos 8 and 9 alongside Morgan at 10, who also converted one of Colley’s tries.

But Loughor added a second try by Beech and two from fellow winger Alex Eaton, as well as another Williams’ conversion as Loughor celebrated their first league win of their season.

Tenby United: Jack Gooding: Adam Quill; Joe Owen; Ryan Bolton; Harvey Johns: Matthew Morgan; Cam Broadhurst: George Rossiter; Frankie Boyd; Ethan Morgan: Rob Luly (Capt); Jake Roberts: Dan Colley; Will Swales; Jack Broadhurst. Replacements: Caleb O’Neill; Jay Brace; Evan Watson; Dylan Johns.

Division Three (West) A:

Saints well beaten on long-haul trip

Tregaron 40 - St Davids 5

Gethin Bateman - rare try for St Davids coachSt Davids struggled to field a team for their long haul trip to Tregaron but with terrific support from three Cardigan players on permit, the recruiting of Gino Cleal from the Pembrokeshire Vikings, plus a common-sense approach from a very talented home club in Tregaron they managed to fulfil the fixture.

It was a relieved Saints’ coach in Gethin Bateman after a lot of midweek chasing around and the match itself was a bitter-sweet one because he grabbed their only score but sustained an arm injury in the process which caused him to leave the field – and they lost in the process!

Tregaron were 14-0 to the good at the interval through tries by centre Rhydian Jones and experienced prop Dorian Pugh, both converted by No 10 Gethin Jones, who also added the extras soon after the restart to a try claimed by full back Ieuan Wyn Rees.

Then came Bateman’s moment of glory before he was forced to leave the field, a rare moment for the old war horse, and Tregaron added further tries by wingers Sean Downes and Rhydian Davies, both again converted by Gethin Jones – but when the outside half darted over for his team’s sixth score he was unable to land a 100% conversion record as his attempt sailed wide of the target.

St Davids:  John Potter: Peter Thomas; Aled Davies; Gavin Jenkins; Morgan Davies: Gino Cleal; Owen Swain: Ben Evans; Andrew Williams; Andrew Fletcher: Carwyn Lewis, Adam Johnston: Chester Smith; Gethin Bateman; Ton Taylor.

Quins battle hard but miss out in Mid Wales

Aberaeron 13 - Pembroke Dock Harlequins 3

Jack Price - usual strong game for The Quins at AberaeronThe match between Aberaeron and Pembroke Dock Harlequins was a hard-fought affair in which the teams were tied at 3-all at the half-way stage but Aber scored two tries in the second period to earn victory – and with The Quins having injuries to winger Jamie Topp and hooker Rhys Roberts which meant they could take no further part in the match.

With Jack Price controlling midfield matters for the visitors they took the lead after eight minutes with a well-struck penalty from centre Gethin Bradney but they were unable to capitalise on other half chances and a penalty by Aber No 10 Rhydian Jenkins tied things up at the break.

Aber also went close ion a few occasions but they finally broke the deadlock midway through the second half when second row Gethin Hughes ploughed over the line – and with just five minutes to go they made sure of their fourth victory of this staccato season when persistent pressure saw No 8 Bleddyn Thomas cross the whitewash and leave the Quins to make their long journey home in fancy dress with nothing tangible to show for their considerable efforts.

Pembroke Dock Harlequins: Thomas Wheeler: Jamie Topp; Jack Price; Gethin Bradney; Kobie Thomas: Aaron Cookson/: Josh Brown: Keiran Cookson; Rhys Roberts; Dan McCloud: Ben Gibby; Hywel Baker; Danny Wilkes; Jordan Palmer; Harry Owen (Capt). Replacement: L. Smith
