Haverfordwest County’s development squad found it hard going against a very strong, committed and skilful Cambrian & Clydach side which is unbeaten so far this season and are already contenders for the end of season silverware.
The Young Bluebirds trailed by three goals at the interval but played better after the interval as coach Steve Batty switched to a man-marking system and sub Sean O’Neill’s goal pulled them back into contention.
But high hopes turned to despair as Cambrian & Clydach were awarded a penalty and ace striker Josh Matsimovic slotted home his third goal before a fifth goal sent the visitors home with the points as reward for a good all-round display.
Honest appraisal from coach Batty
“I thought we lacked purpose in the first half’” admitted coach Batty, “and we certainly showed them too much respect.
“But sometimes you have to hold your hand up and say they were just too experienced for our developing youngsters – and although they are good to watch they are not so good to play against!”
In that first half, the Young Bluebirds found themselves 3-0 in arrears as Matsimovic struck twice and sandwiched neatly in between was a goal by Cameron Keetch.
Sean O’Neill’s strike gave the Young Bluebirds hope but when Scott Jones adjudged by referee Angus Scourfield to have brought down Keetch in the box, Matsimovic drilled home the resultant spot-kick – and James Tomlinson added a fifth to maintain his team’s 100% start to their league and cup season.
