Penybont 0 – Haverfordwest County 4

Haverfordwest County grabbed four goals without reply to easily account for Penybont in the first round of the Word Cup played at the Kymco Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Penybont, the Welsh League Division One outfit, who are currently sitting ninth in the table, struggled to cope against the superior Welsh Premier outfit.

The Bluebirds have lost their first three games in the Welsh Premier, so this clash put them under immense pressure as they were expected to comfortably despatch Penybont.

Early break through

The visitors opened the scoring in the 8th minute; John Roberts made good ground down the left and whipped in an accurate cross that was met by Luke Borrelli, who slotted home from ten yards.

That’s how the score stood at half time, with the visitors still with plenty to do against their resilient opponents, but with Liam Hutchinson, Kieran Howard and Nicky Palmer working tirelessly in midfield and Ryan Batley shaping up well alongside Dale Griffiths, Sam Rodon and Ricky Watts at the back.

Quick fire goals

Haverfordwest County grabbed three further goals in the space of a ten-minute purple patch after half time to secure a comfortable victory.

Roberts’ fierce goal-bound shot deflected off Dale Griffiths before finding the net for the second, minutes later, Roberts added the third with a low left-footed drive, then Borrelli added his second of the game for the fourth, with another well-taken strike.

Late in the tie, Borrelli was unlucky not to get a hat-trick as the striker failed to beat the home custodian in a one-on-one.

But this result was a morale-boosting win for Wayne Jones’ Bluebirds as they look to get their first league points of the campaign as they entertain fellow new boys Llandudno at the Conygar Bridge Meadow, this Saturday, kick off 2.30pm.
