Haverfordwest County stay top of the table despite slipping to their first league defeat of the season at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium against Cambrian & Clydach.

Bluebirds lose out for the first time in the league this season

Second half goals by visiting skipper Hugh Bowtell and Kieron Lewis secured the points, the Bluebirds pulled a goal back eight minutes from the end by centre back Sam Rodon.

No grumbles

There were no grumbles from the Bluebirds’ camp as they conceded they were beaten by a better team on the day, but they will be looking to get straight back on the bike next Saturday when they travel to second from bottom West End.

There were no goals in the first half as the visitors came closest as Joshua Ryall flashed an edge of the area shot just wide.

Chances go begging

The Bluebirds had the better start to the second half with Dale Griffiths heading a Chris O’Sullivan corner over the crossbar, O’Sullivan saw his direct free-kick frantically cleared off the goal line, Tim Hicks supplied a neat flick on for Steffan Williams, who drilled a low shot wide.

Hicks really should have scored when he was through with a one-on-one with Clydach’s goalkeeper Jarred Howells, the striker lacked composure as his  low shot flew inches past the post.

The Bluebirds were made to pay for missing their scoring chances as the visitors took the lead in the 58th minute, a horrendous mix-up at the heart of the Bluebirds’ defence led to Bowtell finishing clinically from inside the box.

Five minutes later and the visitors doubled the lead with a cracking goal scored by Lewis, the midfielder rifling a low shot in the far corner.

The Bluebirds brought on all their substitutes Dylan Blain, Joe Leahy and Declan Carroll in a determined effort to get themselves back in the game.

Sam Rodon pulled one back in the 82nd minute, heading in an O’Sullivan corner and right at the death Leahy dragged a shot agonisingly wide when they could have stolen a point.
