The Young Bluebirds are strong at the back
Liam Fawcett - scored the Young Bluebirds' first two goals
McWhirter League Cup Second Round:
Haverfordwest County Youth 5 - Monmouth Town Youth 1
The Young Bluebirds were 2-1 ahead at the interval and might have doubled their goal tally – but whatever coaches Steve Batty and Colin Fawcett said at half time clearly worked because they added another three goals without response.
The only black marks on another excellent display was the fact that they lost influential midfielder Martyn Carroll with a first-half ankle injury and substitute Marcus Blair was red-carded by referee Adrian Harries within ten minutes of coming on in the second period.
Good all round as Fawcett strikes twice
The Young Bluebirds were strong at the back as Joseph Williams, Own Coombs and Dan Jenkins worked well in front of keeper Dan Evans. Mark Davies, Glen Fiteni, Joe Brill and Laurie Haworth worked well in midfield as skipper Jack Britton was rested, whilst James Truman and Liam Fawcett posed real problems for Tom Berry and the rest of the Monmouth defence.
Liam Fawcett maintained his excellent form as he struck twice in the first period, the opening score coming from a Carroll cross on the right from which he swivelled past two would-be markers and fired past Matthew Johns. He added his second following an excellent build up but Monmouth showed they were not going to give up easily as Morgan Osborne and Jordan Boxhall-James chased hard up front.
Penalty scored at the second attempt
They pulled a goal back before the oranges when referee Harries spotted a trip in the box and Berry scored at his second attempt from the spot after Dan Evans saved his first attempt but the match officials decided Evans had moved before the ball was kicked.
Blues raise the tempo and score more goals
Laurie Haworth rounded off a period of home pressure early in the second half when good work by Joe Brill allowed him to fire home a left-foot drive as reward for his hard work – and then Glen Fiteni added two further goals, cutting inside for the first and finishing off a neat build-up for the second.
It was quality stuff from the Young Bluebirds, who must now wait to see who their third-round opponents will be.
