McWhirter Youth League:
Haverfordwest County Youth 4 - Carmarthen Town Youth 2
Haverfordwest County Youth showed what a good all-round side they have become as they proved too quick, stro
The young Bluebirds were 1-0 ahead at half time and might have been further in front, and were deservedly four goals in front before they took their foot off the gas in the last ten minutes and conceded two goals, one a penalty.
Early chances missed
They could have been three goals to the good in the first quarter but Liam Davies drove a Martin Carroll free kick wide from close range, Glen Fetini fired a left foot shot over the bar and had another shot blocked in a packed goalmouth.
Gwion Howell’s shot also ricocheted wide before the Bluebirds finally took the lead with a delightful goal by Laurie Haworth, who was put through by Liam Fawcett, rounded the keeper with ease and slid the ball home as the cover converged in vain.
Second half strikes
The second half continued in the same vein as Josh Jones and Sion Howley battled hard for Carmarthen but the Bluebirds doubled their lead after Fawcett and Jack Britton had missed half chances – and Haworth tapped in after good work by Mark Davies, Gwion Howell and Fiteni in midfield.
Owen Coombs came on as sub for Haverfordwest and rocketed his header from a Carroll corner past Dan Russell in the Carmarthen goal – and goal No 4 soon followed when Fiteni beat his marker and fired into the right hand corner for a quality finish.
Late goals for the visitors
The visitors kept plugging away, however, and opened their account with a penalty by Sam Wilson after Britton had been yellow-carded for a late challenge in the box. Jack Fisher added Carmarthen’s second goal right on time to help his side to a result that was perhaps a little more flattering than they deserved.
But Bluebirds’ coaches Steve Batty and Colin Fawcett will have been pleased with their team’s overall performance, where their emphasis on a quality passing game shone through for 85 minutes!
