Welsh Premier Development Competition:

Haverfordwest County Youth 8 - Llanelli Town Youth 2

Haverfordwest County’s talented young players followed up three successive defats against top opposition with a terrific performance at home to a Llanelli Town side that never gave up trying but were outplayed from start to finish.

The Young Bluebirds were 3-0 ahead at the interval and the only criticism was the fact that they missed several more chances and were also denied by Llanelli keeper Kai Rees, who was his team’s player of the match, despite conceding eight goals.

Interval lead established

It was Charlie Davies who gave the home side the lead after 14 minutes when he burst through from midfield and planted a low left-foot shot past Rees – and might have scored again as he joined Stottor and Fraser Finlay in having shots saved by the Llanelli keeper.

But they doubled their lead from a defensive mix up that saw Rees’s save bounce back off a defender and into the net and added a third just before the interval when Finlay’s low drive from outside the box took an awkward bounce and hit Rees on the shoulder before rolling into the far corner.

At this stage Llanelli had rarely looked like scoring as Jake Merry did a good job as holding midfielder whilst central defenders Matty Delaney and Alaric were in total control, assisted by Jimmy Wilkes and Leon Luby so that Nick Jones had little to do in the Bluebirds’ goal.

Goals galore in the second half

Charlie Davies again opened the second period with a clinical left-foot drive past Rees but other chances went abegging and as the Young Bluebirds took their foot off the gas Llanelli scored a goal through Joe Stephens with a raking shot.

This caused the home side to increase their temp, with Leon Luby, Davies, Zac Rowell and Jack Wilson as real powerhouses. Luby in particular showed the class that has seen him play at senior level and his exquisite crosses from wide on the left created mayhem. Charlie Davies claimed his third goal from his trusty left foot.

Alfie Stottor also score three goals, one a simple tap-in and two more from close range headers , with Llanelli adding their second sandwiched in between when Callum Howard fired past Jones in a goalmouth melee.

Rowan Nicholson and Curtis Hicks also made cameos and featured well to round off a good day for manager Steve Batty and his team at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.
